Comparison of CDMS [100] and [111] oriented germanium detectors
The Cryogenic Dark Matter Search (CDMS) utilizes large mass, 3" diameter
1" thick target masses as particle detectors. The target is
instrumented with both phonon and ionization sensors and comparison of energy
in each channel provides event-by-event classification of electron and nuclear
recoils. Fiducial volume is determined by the ability to obtain good phonon and
ionization signal at a particular location. Due to electronic band structure in
germanium, electron mass is described by an anisotropic tensor with heavy mass
aligned along the symmetry axis defined by the [111] Miller index (L valley),
resulting in large lateral component to the transport. The spatial distribution
of electrons varies significantly for detectors which have their longitudinal
axis orientations described by either the [100] or [111] Miller indices.
Electric fields with large fringing component at high detector radius also
affect the spatial distribution of electrons and holes. Both effects are
studied in a 3 dimensional Monte Carlo and the impact on fiducial volume is

Wigs, disguises and child's play : solidarity in teacher education
It is generally acknowledged that much contemporary education takes place within a dominant audit culture, in which accountability becomes a powerful driver of educational practices. In this culture both pupils and teachers risk being configured as a means to an assessment and target-driven end: pupils are schooled within a particular paradigm of education. The article discusses some ethical issues raised by such schooling, particularly the tensions arising for teachers, and by implication, teacher educators who prepare and support teachers for work in situations where vocational aims and beliefs may be in in conflict with instrumentalist aims. The article offers De Certeau’s concept of ‘la perruque’ to suggest an opening to playful engagement for human ends in education, as a way of contending with and managing the tensions generated. I use the concept to recover a concept of solidarity for teacher educators and teachers to enable ethical teaching in difficult times
Surface relaxation and ferromagnetism of Rh(001)
The significant discrepancy between first-principles calculations and
experimental analyses for the relaxation of the (001) surface of rhodium has
been a puzzle for some years. In this paper we present density functional
theory calculations using the local-density approximation and the generalized
gradient approximation of the exchange-correlation functional. We investigate
the thermal expansion of the surface and the possibility of surface magnetism.
The results throw light on several, hitherto overlooked, aspects of metal
surfaces. We find, that, when the free energy is considered, density-functional

"Diamond" over-coated Microstrip Gas Chambers for high rate operation
We describe the recent developments on the diamond-like carbon (DLC) over-coated Microstrip Gas Chambers made on drawn glass substrates. MSGC surface coating with thin DLC layer of stable and controlled resistivity was proposed to overcome the limitation of detector operation due to surface charging-up under avalanches. This brings also advantages for the detector manufacturing technology. The thin layer, deposited on top of a manufactured MSGC (over-coating), demonstrates excellent mechanical properties and very good stability. We report on recent measurements with DLC over-coated MSGCs of various surface resistivities (ranging from 1013W/r to 1016W/r) on D-263 and AF45 glass substrates. Over-coated MSGCs exhibit good rate capability for the resistivity of the surface around 1015W/r. Stable operation up to 50 mC/cm of accumulated charge from avalanches has been demonstrated
Structure and dynamics of Rh surfaces
Lattice relaxations, surface phonon spectra, surface energies, and work
functions are calculated for Rh(100) and Rh(110) surfaces using
density-functional theory and the full-potential linearized augmented plane
wave method. Both, the local-density approximation and the generalized gradient
approximation to the exchange-correlation functional are considered. The force
constants are obtained from the directly calculated atomic forces, and the
temperature dependence of the surface relaxation is evaluated by minimizing the
free energy of the system. The anharmonicity of the atomic vibrations is taken
into account within the quasiharmonic approximation. The importance of

Validation of Phonon Physics in the CDMS Detector Monte Carlo
The SuperCDMS collaboration is a dark matter search effort aimed at detecting
the scattering of WIMP dark matter from nuclei in cryogenic germanium targets.
The CDMS Detector Monte Carlo (CDMS-DMC) is a simulation tool aimed at
achieving a deeper understanding of the performance of the SuperCDMS detectors
and aiding the dark matter search analysis. We present results from validation
of the phonon physics described in the CDMS-DMC and outline work towards

They nevertheless hold Panapompom people to account as subjects to a voice and gaze that is located in the imagery they strive to present: their clothes. This predicament strains anthropological approaches to the study of Melanesia that subsist on strict alterity, because native self‐judgments are located ‘at home’ for the ethnographer. In this article, I develop the notion of the counterpart as a means to explore these forms of postcolonial oppression and their implications for the ethnographic encounter
University–industry collaboration: using meta-rules to overcome barriers to knowledge transfer

Available from Springer Verlag via the DOI in this record.University–industry knowledge transfer is an important source wealth of creation for all partners; however, the practical management of this activity within universities is often hampered by procedural rigidity either through the absence of decision-making protocols to reconcile conflicting priorities or through the inconsistent implementation of existing policies. This is problematic, since it can impede operational effectiveness, prevent inter-organisational knowledge-creation and hamper organisational learning. This paper addresses this issue by adopting a cross-discipline approach and presenting meta-rules as a solution to aid organisational decision making. It is proposed that meta-rules can help resolve tensions arising from conflicting priorities between academics, knowledge transfer offices and industry and help facilitate strategic alignment of processes and policies within and between organisations. This research contributes to the growing debate on the strategic challenges of managing knowledge transfer and presents meta-rules as a practical solution to facilitate strategic alignment of internal and external stakeholder tensions. Meta-rules has previously only been applied in a computer intelligence context however, this research proves the efficacy of meta rules in a university–industry knowledge transfer context. This research also has practical implications for knowledge transfer office managers who can use meta-rules to help overcome resource limitations, conflicting priorities and goals of diverse internal and external stakeholders
State work and the testing concours of citizenship
Anyone trying to be a citizen has to pass through a set of practices trying to be a state. This paper investigates some of the ways testing practices calibrate citizens, and in doing so, perform “the state.” The paper focuses on three forms of citizenship testing, which it considers exemplary forms of “state work,” and which all, in various ways, concern “migration.” First, the constitution of a “border crossing,” which requires an identity test configured by deceptibility. Second, the Dutch asylum process, in which “being gay” can, in certain cases, be reason for being granted asylum, but where “being gay” is also the outcome of an examination organized by suspicion. And third, the Dutch measurement of immigrants’ “integration,” which is comprised of a testing process in which such factishes as “being a member of society” and “being modern” surface. Citizenship is analyzed in this paper as accrued and (re)configured along a migration trajectory that takes shape as a testing concours, meaning that subjects become citizens along a trajectory of testing practices. In contributing both to work on states and citizenship, and to work on testing, this paper thus puts forward the concept of citizenship testing as state work, where “state work is the term for that kind of labor that most knows itself as comparison, equivalency, and exchange in the social realm” (Harney, 2002, pp. 10–11). Throughout the testing practices discussed here, comparison, equivalency, and exchange figure prominently as the practical achievements of crafting states and citizens
