Mulheres marcadas: prostituição, ordem e exclusão

In the article, we debate the stigmatizing processes on women engaged in club prostitution in the section of the Iberian frontier located between the cross-border axes of Montalegre-Xinzo de Limia and Bragança-Alcañices/Zamora. From the perspective of symbolic interactionism about stigmatization as a relational projection embedded in dissensions between actors or groups situated in different moral spaces, we consider as main objectives: (i) map the social dynamics of the production of derogatory stereotypes about prostitution, (ii) interpret meanings present in the stigmatizing practices, (iii) understand the relevance of women’s ethnicity and corporeal nature in the activation/reinforcement of these practices, (iv) identify some effects produced by the interpersonal and institutional repression of commercial sex, (v) show the ubiquity of the whore stigma as a form of symbolic violence against women in general, disciplining bodies and behaviors. We seek, in this way, an understanding of social mechanics, contents, reasons, consequences and breadth of the stigmas aimed at sex workers, keeping in mind that therein reside many of their major problems and, therefore, many of the priority challenges to social intervention in the field of prostitution.En el artículo debatimos los procesos estigmatizantes sobre las mujeres que ejercen la prostitución de club en el segmento de la frontera Ibérica situado entre los ejes transfronterizos Montalegre-Xinzo de Limia y Bragança-Alcañices/Zamora. Desde la perspectiva del interaccionismo simbólico sobre la estigmatización como proyección relacional inscrita en disensiones entre actores o grupos ubicados en diferentes cuadrantes morales, consideramos como objetivos principales: (i) mapear dinámicas sociales de producción de estereotipos peyorativos sobre la prostitución, (ii) interpretar sentidos presentes en las acciones estigmatizantes, (iii) comprender la relevancia de la etnicidad y de la corporeidad de las mujeres visadas en la activación/refuerzo de estas acciones, (iv) identificar algunos de los efectos generados por la represión interpersonal e institucional del sexo mercantil, (v) mostrar la omnipresencia del estigma puta como forma de violencia simbólica sobre las mujeres en general, disciplinando cuerpos y comportamientos. Buscamos, de este modo, la comprensión de la mecánica social, contenidos, razones, consecuencias y amplitud de los estigmas dirigidos a las trabajadoras sexuales, teniendo presente que ahí residen muchos de sus mayores problemas y, por lo tanto, muchos de los desafíos prioritarios que se colocan a la intervención social en el ámbito de la prostitución

Violence against Prostitutes

Violence has long been assumed to be an intrinsic trait of female prostitution. However, it has been mostly associated with the locale in which the activity is exercised, i.e. with working time and space. In this article, based on data gathered by direct observations, in-depth interviews and the compilation of so-called time-budgets, the authors demonstrate that violence is as pervasive and omnipresent a feature of prostitutes’ ostensibly private ‘off-duty’ (non-working) time and space, though it takes on varied and distinct forms and configurations, compared to violence in the workplace

Vírus em viagem: fluxos turísticos globais e propagação pandémica da Covid-19

Na relação com a Covid-19, o turismo é referenciado sobretudo como uma esfera socioeconômica severamente afetada, não sendo dado o devido relevo ao seu papel  enquanto componente do sistema de condições que desencadeou a pandemia. Perante esta situação, a análise desenvolvida é orientada pelo intuito de perceber como os processos de massificação turística e a abrangente rede de transporte aéreo que pressupõem, gerando conectividades, trânsitos e velocidade sistêmica, contribuíram para a súbita globalização do Sars-CoV-2. Para tal são mobilizados dados resultantes de um processo de pesquisa de teor documental em fontes mediáticas, fontes associadas a grandes instituições internacionais de natureza intergovernamental e fontes científicas. A partir desses dados é possível  depreender-se que os contextos turísticos e as respectivas estruturas de mobilidade são o resultado de complexas assemblagens mais- do-que-humanas nas quais emergem condições sociais, ambientais e tecnológicas que funcionam como poderosos vetores estruturais de rápida difusão transnacional de biocontaminantes, responsáveis, em alguns casos, por cenários pandêmicos como aquele em que vivemos desde março de 2020.In the relationship with Covid-19,  tourism is mainly referred as a severely affected socio-economic sphere. Its  role as a component of the system of  conditions that triggered the pandemic is not given due prominence. In light  of this situation, the analysis is guided by the aim of understanding how the tourism massification and the  extensive air transport network that it requires, generating connectivity,  transits and systemic speed,  contributed to the sudden  globalization of Sars-CoV-2. To this end, data are mobilised from  documentary research in different  sources: media, sources associated with intergovernmental international institutions, and scientific sources.  From these data it is possible to  deduce that tourist contexts and their mobility structures are the result of complex more-than-human assemblages in which social,  environmental and technologicalconditions emerge, functioning as powerful structural vectors of rapid transnational diffusion of  biocontaminants responsible, in some cases, for pandemic scenarios like the one we have been living in since March 2020

Virus, wars and new heroes: the Covid-19 pandemic under the biomilitarism

Desenvolvo um exercício compreensivo sobre as construções sociais mais proeminentes, induzidas sobretudo pela ciência, em torno da pandemia de Covid-19, considerando para tal conteúdos jornalísticos online segundo uma perspetiva inspirada no desígnio etnográfico da procura de sentidos. Constato que as metáforas bélicas assumem um papel hegemónico como recursos semânticos privilegiados de conceptualização da crise sanitária e do que é feito, a vários níveis, para lidar com a situação de emergência. Estas metáforas expressam-se desde a escala microfísica de caracterização do vírus e da sua relação com o organismo humano à escala social da epidemiologia da infeção, das respostas socio-sanitárias, das implicações geopolíticas e das expressões identitárias de diferentes agentes, sobretudo dos profissionais que atuam nas esferas da ciência e da saúde. Ironicamente, a pandemia que atrai tantos tropos que remetem para a guerra e o militarismo tem-se constituído, em simultâneo, como um campo de indução de guerras tácitas, dando azo a múltiplas disputas político-ideológicas e tensões geopolíticas.I develop a comprehensive exercise on the most prominent social constructions around the Covid-19 pandemic, induced mainly by science. It is considered online journalistic content according to a perspective inspired by the ethnographic purpose of looking for meanings. War metaphors assume a hegemonic role as privileged semantic resources for conceptualizing the health crisis and what is done to deal with the emergency situation at various levels. These metaphors are expressed from the microphysical scale of characterization of the virus and its relationship with the human organism to the social scale of the infection epidemiology, socio-sanitary responses, geopolitical implications and identity expressions of different agents, especially professionals who operate in the spheres of science and health. Ironically, the pandemic that attracts so many tropes that refer to war and militarism has been constituted, simultaneously, as an induction field of tacit wars, giving rise to multiple political-ideological disputes and geopolitical tensions

Emigrar para o outro lado do mar : brasileiras imaginam a Europa

Instigada pelos media globais, a imaginação de contextos e estilos de vida alternativos é uma prática social cada vez mais (re)corrente. No artigo analiso esta prática entre mulheres brasileiras que se envolvem em relações de intimidade com turistas europeus no bairro balnear de Ponta Negra (Natal, Nordeste brasileiro). Sem esquecer que a imaginação é indissociável de determinados quadros de economia política, procuro compreender de onde procedem e como se manifestam os0 imaginários da Europa produzidos por estas mulheres; em que medida estes imaginários configuram predisposição e agência para a migração transatlântica; e como as representações prévias são calibradas e ressignificadas quando ocorrem mobilidades para o continente europeu. A análise é alicerçada numa experiência de terreno etnográfica, no âmbito da qual a observação participante e as entrevistas semidirigidas constituíram procedimentos centrais de pesquisa empírica.Instigated by the global media, the imagination of alternative contexts and lifestyles is an increasingly (re)current social practice. In the article I analyse this practice among Brazilian women who are involved in intimate relationships with European tourists in the seaside neighbourhood of Ponta Negra (Natal, Northeast Brazil). Bearing in mind that the imagination is inseparable from certain political economy frameworks, I try to understand where the imaginary of Europe produced by these women come from and how it manifests itself; to what extent do these imaginary shapes predisposition and agency for transatlantic migration; and how previous representations are calibrated and resignified when mobilities for the European continent occur. The analysis is based on an ethnographic fieldwork experience, in which participant observation and semi-directed interviews constituted the main means of empirical research

Sociedade, espaço e fluxos: reflexões sobre processos transnacionais

The text debates the social configurations that go beyond borders and gain shape at a transnational scenario, linked to multiple geographies and to dense networks of fluxes. The main purpose is to understand how several expressions of contemporary social life are based on dispersion and kinetic, constituting themselves between multiple scales and locations, through a complex set of transits and links. At the same time is given due attention to the political economy of global mobilities, seeking to make clear that, despite a certain systemic fluidity, the richest countries,through its borders, establish the rhythm, volume and composition of the flows arising from their international connections.O texto considera as configurações sociais que extravasam fronteiras e ganham forma no plano transnacional, vinculadas a múltiplas geografias e a densas redes de fluxos. O principal objetivo é compreender como muitas das expressões da vida social contemporânea se baseiam na dispersão e na cinética, constituindo-se entre diversas escalas e localizações através de um complexo conjunto de trânsitos e ligações. Ao mesmo tempo é conferida a devida atenção à economia política dasmobilidades globais, procurando tornar evidente que, apesar de uma certa fluidez sistêmica, os países mais ricos, através das suas fronteiras, pautam o ritmo, o volume e a composição dos fluxos que decorrem de suas conexões internacionais

Turismo e Transnacionalização da Intimidade nos Trópicos Globais

El texto proporciona un breve mapeo de destinos tropicales a nivel mundial donde el turismo de masas de sol y playa se cruza con la formación de relaciones íntimas transnacionales. Considerando las experiencias turísticas y las configuraciones de intimidad que ahí emergen, el objetivo prioritario de la reflexión pasa por cuestionar la pertinencia de la noción de turismo sexual como concepto hegemónico en la mayoría de los ejercicios de análisis y conceptualización de estos contextos. Aunque reconociendo la presencia de fuertes expectativas pasionales ligadas a la movilidad turística para muchos destinos de la cintura tropical global, se establece una distancia crítica ante la idea de turismo sexual. El objetivo es mostrar que esta es una designación que, además de enredada en estereotipos, denota una gran incoherencia epistemológica y es profundamente reductiva, incapaz de traducir la complejidad y la dinámica subyacentes a las expectativas, prácticas y relaciones que constituyen los encuentros íntimos transnacionales entre visitantes y locales. The text provides a brief global mapping of the tropical destinations where the sun and beach mass tourism is connected with the constitution of intimate transnational relationships. Considering the touristic experiences and the intimacy configurations that emerge there, the main objective of the reflection is to question the pertinence of the sex tourism notion as hegemonic concept in almost all exercises of analysis and conceptualization of these contexts. Although recognizing the presence of strong passional expectations linked to the touristic mobility for many destinations of the global tropical belt, a critical distance to the idea of sex tourism is established. The aim is to show that this designation is entangled in stereotypes, denotes a great epistemological inconsistency and is deeply reductive, unable to translate the complexity and the dynamics underlying the framework of expectations, practices and relationships that constitute the transnational intimate meetings between visitors and locals.O texto proporciona um breve mapeamento dos destinos tropicais à escala global onde o turismo de massas de sol e praia se entrecruza com a constituição de relacionamentos íntimos transnacionais. Considerando as experiências turísticas e as configurações de intimidade que aí emergem, o objetivo prioritário da reflexão passa por questionar a pertinência da noção de turismo sexual como conceito hegemónico na generalidade dos exercícios de análise e conceptualização destes contextos. Embora se reconheça a presença de fortes expectativas passionais associadas às mobilidades turísticas para muitos destinos da cintura tropical global, tenta estabelecer-se um distanciamento crítico face à ideia de turismo sexual. O intuito é mostrar que se trata uma designação que, além de enredada em estereótipos, denota uma grande inconsistência epistemológica e é profundamente redutora, incapaz de traduzir a complexidade e o dinamismo subjacentes ao quadro de expectativas, práticas e relações que configuram os encontros íntimos transnacionais entre visitantes e locais. 

Proximidade, reflexividade e crítica: o lugar da etnografia na intervenção social

This paper explores the relationship between ethnography and social intervention, considering the possibilities offered by ethnography to accomplish a more sensitive approach to the social contexts subject of the social workers’ intervention. It will be discussed how ethnography can participate in the comprehension and delimitation of «social problems», and in the assessment of social policy impact. The role of ethnography as socio-cognitive and epistemological tool for social workers will also be under scrutiny.Neste artigo debate-se a relação entre o método etnográfico e a intervenção social, escrutinando as possibilidades que a etnografia oferece para uma abordagem mais próxima, reflexiva e sensível aos contextos objecto do serviço social. Discutir-se-ão o lugar e o papel da etnografia na compreensão e na delimitação dos “problemas sociais”, na reflexão sobre o impacto das políticas e medidas sociais e como ferramenta sócio-cognitiva e epistemológica dos profissionais de serviço social.
