    Time variations in the deep underground muon flux

    More than 35 million high-energy muons collected with the MACRO detector at the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory have been used to search for flux variations of different nature. Two kinds of studies were carried out: a search for the occurrence of clusters of events and a search for periodic variations.     Development of large area resistive electrodes for ATLAS NSW Micromegas

    Micromegas with resistive anodes will be used for the NSW upgrades of the ATLAS experiment at LHC. Resistive electrodes are used in MPGD devices to prevent sparks in high-rate operation. Large-area resistive electrodes for Micromegas have been developed using two different technologies: screen printing and carbon sputtering. The maximum resistive foil size is 45 × 220 cm with a printed pattern of 425-μm pitch strips. These technologies are also suitable for mass production.     π\piNN coupling and two-pion photoproduction on the nucleon

    Effects of non-resonant photoproductions arising from two different πNN\pi NN couplings are investigated in the γNππN\gamma N\to\pi\pi N reaction. We find that the pseudoscalar (PS) πNN\pi NN coupling is generally preferable to the pseudovector (PV) πNN\pi NN coupling and particularly the total cross sections are successfully described by the model with the PS πNN\pi NN coupling. In order to see the difference between the two couplings, we also show the results of invariant mass spectra and helicity-dependent cross sections in various isospin channels calculated with the PS and PV couplings.Comment: 35 pages, 11 figures, minor changes and version to be published in Phys.Rev.

    Study of the Gauge Mediation Signal with Non-pointing Photons at the CERN LHC

    In this paper we study the gauge mediation signal with the ATLAS detector at the CERN LHC. We focus on the case where the NLSP is the long-lived lightest neutralino (χ~10\tilde{\chi}^0_1) which decays dominantly into a photon (γ\gamma) and a gravitino (G~\tilde{G}). A non-pointing photon from the neutralino decay can be detected with good position and time resolutions by the electormagnetic calorimeter (ECAL), while the photon momentum would be precisely measured if the photon is converted inside the inner tracking detector before reaching the ECAL. A new technique is developed to determine the masses of the slepton (~\tilde{\ell}) and the neutralino from events with a lepton and a converted non-pointing photon arising from the cascade decay ~χ~10γG~\tilde{\ell}\to \ell\tilde{\chi}^0_1\to \ell\gamma \tilde{G}. A Monte Carlo simulation at a sample point shows that the masses would be measured with an error of 3% for O\cal{O}(100) selected γ\ell\gamma pairs. Once the sparticle masses are determined by this method, the decay time and momentum of the neutralino are solved using the ECAL data and the lepton momentum only, for all γ\ell\gamma pairs without the photon conversion. We estimate the sensitivity to the neutralino lifetime for cτ=10c\tau=10 cm to O\cal{O}(10) m.Comment: 19 page, 7 figures, revte

    We construct the formula for the photonuclear total absorption cross section using the projection method and the unitarity relation. Our treatment is very effective when interference effects in the absorption processes on a nucleon are strong. The disappearance of the peak around the position of the D13D_{13} resonance in the nuclear photoabsorption can be explained with the cooperative effect of the interference in two-pion production processes,the Fermi motion, the collision broadenings of Δ\Delta and NN^*, and the pion distortion in the nuclear medium.     First astronomical unit scale image of the GW Ori triple. Direct detection of a new stellar companion

    Young and close multiple systems are unique laboratories to probe the initial dynamical interactions between forming stellar systems and their dust and gas environment. Their study is a key building block to understanding the high frequency of main-sequence multiple systems. However, the number of detected spectroscopic young multiple systems that allow dynamical studies is limited. GW Orionis is one such system. It is one of the brightest young T Tauri stars and is surrounded by a massive disk. Our goal is to probe the GW Orionis multiplicity at angular scales at which we can spatially resolve the orbit. We used the IOTA/IONIC3 interferometer to probe the environment of GW Orionis with an astronomical unit resolution in 2003, 2004, and 2005. By measuring squared visibilities and closure phases with a good UV coverage we carry out the first image reconstruction of GW Ori from infrared long-baseline interferometry. We obtain the first infrared image of a T Tauri multiple system with astronomical unit resolution. We show that GW Orionis is a triple system, resolve for the first time the previously known inner pair (separation ρ\rho\sim1.4 AU) and reveal a new more distant component (GW Ori C) with a projected separation of \sim8 AU with direct evidence of motion. Furthermore, the nearly equal (2:1) H-band flux ratio of the inner components suggests that either GW Ori B is undergoing a preferential accretion event that increases its disk luminosity or that the estimate of the masses has to be revisited in favour of a more equal mass-ratio system that is seen at lower inclination. Accretion disk models of GW Ori will need to be completely reconsidered because of this outer companion C and the unexpected brightness of companion B.Comment: 5 pages, 9 figures, accepted Astronomy and Astrophysics Letters. 201

    Modelling Circumbinary Gas Flows in Close T Tauri Binaries

    Young close binaries open central gaps in the surrounding circumbinary accretion disc, but the stellar components may still gain mass from gas crossing through the gap. It is not well understood how this process operates and how the stellar components are affected by such inflows. Our main goal is to investigate how gas accretion takes place and evolves in close T Tauri binary systems. In particular, we model the accretion flows around two close T Tauri binaries, V4046 Sgr and DQ Tau, both showing periodic changes in emission lines, although their orbital characteristics are very different. In order to derive the density and velocity maps of the circumbinary material, we employ two-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations with a locally isothermal equation of state. The flow patterns become quasi-stable after a few orbits in the frame co-rotating with the system. Gas flows across the circumbinary gap through the co-rotating Lagrangian points, and local circumstellar discs develop around both components. Spiral density patterns develop in the circumbinary disc that transport angular momentum efficiently. Mass is preferentially channelled towards the primary and its circumstellar disc is more massive than the disc around the secondary. We also compare the derived density distribution to observed line profile variability. The line profile variability tracing the gas flows in the central cavity shows clear similarities with the corresponding observed line profile variability in V4046 Sgr, but only when the local circumstellar disc emission was excluded. Closer to the stars normal magnetospheric accretion may dominate while further out the dynamic accretion process outlined here dominates. Periodic changes in the accretion rates onto the stars can explain the outbursts of line emission observed in eccentric systems such as DQ Tau.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRA

    Inferior vestibular neuritis: 3 cases with clinical features of acute vestibular neuritis, normal calorics but indications of saccular failure

    BACKGROUND: Vestibular neuritis (VN) is commonly diagnosed by demonstration of unilateral vestibular failure, as unilateral loss of caloric response. As this test reflects the function of the superior part of the vestibular nerve only, cases of pure inferior nerve neuritis will be lost. CASE PRESENTATIONS: We describe three patients with symptoms suggestive of VN, but normal calorics. All 3 had unilateral loss of vestibular evoked myogenic potential. A slight, asymptomatic position dependent nystagmus, with the pathological ear down, was observed. CONCLUSION: We believe that these patients suffer from pure inferior nerve vestibular neuritis

    Lbx2 regulates formation of myofibrils

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Skeletal muscle differentiation requires assembly of contractile proteins into organized myofibrils. The <it>Drosophila ladybird homeobox </it>gene (<it>lad</it>) functions in founder cells of the segmental border muscle to promote myoblast fusion and muscle shaping. Tetrapods have two homologous genes (<it>Lbx</it>). Lbx1 functions in migration and/or proliferation of hypaxial myoblasts, whereas the function of Lbx2 is poorly understood.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>To elucidate the role of Lbx in vertebrate myogenesis, we examined Lbx function in zebrafish. Zebrafish <it>lbx2 </it>transcripts appear in newly formed paraxial mesoderm and become restricted to adaxial cells, precursors of slow muscle. Slow muscles lose <it>lbx2 </it>expression as they differentiate, while a subset of differentiating fast muscle cells transiently expresses <it>lbx2</it>. Fin and hyoid muscle express <it>lbx2 </it>later. In contrast, <it>lbx1b </it>expression first appears lateral to the somites at late segmentation stages and is later restricted to fin muscle. Morpholino knockdown of Lbx1b and Lbx2 suppresses hypaxial muscle development. Moreover, knockdown of Lbx2 results in malformation of muscle fibers and reduced fusion of fast precursors, although no obvious effects on induction or specification are observed. Expression of myofilament genes, including <it>actin </it>and <it>myosin</it>, requires the engrailed repressor domain of Lbx2.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Our results elucidate a new function of Lbx2 as a regulator of myofibril formation.</p
