The study was carried out in five institutions where motor vehicle mechanics trade is offered as automobile technology which includes, three centers where auto scan tools are used for vehicle repairs and two technical colleges in Enugu state that offer motor vehicle mechanics (MVM) trade. A total of 83 MVM trainers, teachers and instructors comprise the population for the study. Five research questions were raised and three null hypotheses tested at 0.05and 0.01 significance levels guided the study. A structured questionnaire with 3 items questions as checklist, 2 Auto scan tools were used for the study and test carried out on 5 vehicle systems at the 3 centers where Innova 1360B with snap shoot (AST1) was compared with Innova 1360B without snap shoot (AST2) were used for vehicle diagnosis. The instrument was validated by five experts and modifications were made in the instrument according to their recommendations. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) of a two- way classification experiment data with two observations per experimental unit was used for the evaluation. The results revealed that the efficiencies of AST1 and AST2 in performing the diagnosis because at 1% level of significance, the F-cal was 0.04 and F-tab was 8.65 but differ in performances on various vehicle systems because at 1% level of significance, the F-cal was 7.38 and F-tab was 7.01.Key words: vehicle systems, auto scan - tool, diagnostic application, comparative analysis, evaluation

The Effect of Preterm Birth on Thalamic and Cortical Development

Preterm birth is a leading cause of cognitive impairment in childhood and is associated with cerebral gray and white matter abnormalities. Using multimodal image analysis, we tested the hypothesis that altered thalamic development is an important component of preterm brain injury and is associated with other macro- and microstructural alterations. T1- and T2-weighted magnetic resonance images and 15-direction diffusion tensor images were acquired from 71 preterm infants at term-equivalent age. Deformation-based morphometry, Tract-Based Spatial Statistics, and tissue segmentation were combined for a nonsubjective whole-brain survey of the effect of prematurity on regional tissue volume and microstructure. Increasing prematurity was related to volume reduction in the thalamus, hippocampus, orbitofrontal lobe, posterior cingulate cortex, and centrum semiovale. After controlling for prematurity, reduced thalamic volume predicted: lower cortical volume; decreased volume in frontal and temporal lobes, including hippocampus, and to a lesser extent, parietal and occipital lobes; and reduced fractional anisotropy in the corticospinal tracts and corpus callosum. In the thalamus, reduced volume was associated with increased diffusivity. This demonstrates a significant effect of prematurity on thalamic development that is related to abnormalities in allied brain structures. This suggests that preterm delivery disrupts specific aspects of cerebral development, such as the thalamocortical system

This article brings an overview of the mechanisms of action of antineoplastic drugs used in the clinical setting. It also describes the genotoxic potentials of the most important classes of antineoplastic drugs involved in standard chemotherapy protocols. Classifi cation of antineoplastic drugs according to the IARC monographs on the evaluation of carcinogenic risks to humans is accompanied by data on their mutagenicity and the most recent updates in the Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical (ATC) Classifi cation System. We report the main fi ndings of biomonitoring studies that were conducted in exposed healthcare workers all over the world between 1980 and 2009 using four biomarkers: sister chromatid exchanges, chromosome aberrations, micronuclei. and the comet assay. The methods are briefl y explained and their advantages and disadvantages discussed. Biomarkers provide important information on individual genome sensitivity, which eventually might help to improve current working practices and to manage the risks related with exposure to genotoxic agents. Taking into consideration all known advantages and drawbacks of the existing cytogenetic methods, the micronucleus assay, which is able to detect both clastogenic and aneugenic action, is the most suitable biomarker for assessing harmful effects of antineoplastic drugs currently used in health care
