Effect of Compensation Strategy on Corporate Performance: Evidence from Nigerian Firms

    Get PDF
Compensation Strategy is seen as one of the most important strategies in the human resource management function as it influences the productivity and growth of an organization. Recently, numerous special journal issues have emerged on compensation, often focusing on organization differences. Examples include: the "New Economics of Personnel" (Journal of Labor Economics, October 1997), "The Economics of Human Resource Management", (Industrial Relations, Spring 1998) and "Do Compensation Policies Matter? An Industrial and Labor Relations Review, February 1990). The Brookings Institution (Blinder, 1990) has also published series of papers by scholars in the management field that reviewed the effectiveness of pay programs such as profit sharing, employee ownership, and so forth. Despite these research efforts, there is little debate about whether employees’ pay has any significant linkage with performance. (see also Gerhart and Milkovich ,1990). Thus, in the present study, we tried to link compensation with performance using selected firms in Nigeria as a case study. We specifically covered three conglomerates in Nigeria. The choice of this case study was not unconnected with the fact that these companies are among the largest employers of labour in the manufacturing industry in Nigeria. Using the cross-sectional data analysis, we found that compensation strategy has the potential beneficial effects of enhancing workers’ productivity and by extension improving the overall organizational performance. Therefore, the significance of compensation cannot be overemphasized in an organization and is in fact a veritable option for attracting, retaining, and motivating employees for improved organizational productivity. This finding further enriches the literature supporting that a higher pay guarantees a higher productivity and vice-versa. This study was conducted to investigate the nature of relationship between marketing strategy and product performance with a special focus on the food and beverage industry in Nigeria. The study used primary data gathered from 284 randomly selected staff of ten selected companies. These companies are quoted on the Nigerian stock exchange. To do this, a questionnaire was adopted as research instrument. The data gathered was subjected to factor analysis and regression analysis.  The results show that indeed marketing strategy impacts product performance of the observed firms. More so, of all the factors considered (promotion strategy, Product strategy, Distribution strategy, General marketing strategy and Pricing Strategy) promotional factors were found to be most important, then product strategy while pricing mix account for the least variation. This paper therefore recommends that business organisations should accord necessary attention to the element of marketing strategy by designing  market strategies driven by a sound marketing management, targeting and strategic positioning.         Key Words: Marketing Strategies, Product performance, Marketing mix, Marketing management, Consumer patronage, Advertising, Marketing, Market Shar

Data obtained was analysed using descriptive statistics while hypotheses were tested using correlation and regression analysis. The result of the findings revealed a strong and direct relationship between change management and employee commitment, success and failure of change programmes has a positive and significant relationship with employee readiness and resistance to change respectively in Nigerian universities. This paper therefore make useful recommendations to universities and other organisations among which include although, employee might resist change, organization should try their best to properly manage the resistance as it can be beneficial to the employees and the educational organizations at large

An Approach to Minimising Estimated Pincushion Camera Distortions

    Get PDF
Minimizing camera distortion has been a focus of recent photorealism researches. Of the several types of camera distortions, researchers concentrated on the radial distortion being the most severe part of the total lens aberrations. Often, polynomial approximations by introducing distortion-specific parameters into the camera model have been methods of evaluating distortions. Of the two types of radial distortions, barrel, is the most discussed probably because of its dominance in cheap wide-angle lenses. In this paper, an approach to estimating and minimizing pincushion distortion by using fundamental surface area properties of the distorted image is proposed. This paper is significant as it reveals the importance of the topic and its implications on the camera. Demonstrations using four camera lenses show the robustness of this technique under different focal lengths conditions. The reliability of the approach is justified by comparing the results with the physical observations using (two tailed) t-test statistic.

Prevalence and correlates of substance use among persons with mental disorders in a Nigerian Psychiatric Hospital

    Get PDF
Few studies in Nigeria have investigated the relationship between psychiatric disorders and substance use. Yet, evidence worldwide suggests that substance related problems might be a major burden among persons with psychiatric disorders. One hundred and five persons with mental illness (105) were evaluated for substance use with the Alcohol, Smoking, and Substance Involvement screening test (ASSIST). A questionnaire was used to elicit Sociodemographic variables. A high proportion had initiated tobacco (50.9%) and cannabis (34.5%) during adolescent. Factors associated with hazardous drug consumption were male sex (p<0.05), younger age (p<0.05)  unemployment (p<0.01) being unmarried (p<0.05) and lower educational level (p<0.05). Routine screening and brief interventions for substance use in psychiatric facilities should be critical components of mental health service delivery

This study examined how the organisation’s human capital was compensated and see whether the compensation even serves as a motivational tool to enhance organisational performance. Seven research questions and two hypotheses were postulated to find solutions to the problems of the study. One hundred and twenty personnel formed the sample size from six organisations. A self-designed instrument labeled Wages and Salaries as a Motivational Tool Questionnaire 2 (WASAMOTOQ2) containing seven sections was used in the collection of data. The findings of the study revealed those factors that militate against adequate compensation to include labour market conditions, the ability of the organisation to pay adequate compensation and the existing country/nation’s present cost of living; what makes up good and adequate compensation include recognition of individual performance and taking care of individual incentives and it shows the relationship between compensation and motivation. It further established the consequential effect of inadequate compensation and motivation on the organisational development. Based on the findings, the following recommendations were proffered that there should be wages/salaries scale and schedule; such should be based on identified indices in the study; that disparity between two identical workers should not be based purely on ‘paper’ qualification but the ability to ‘deliver’; and that wages/salaries should display equality, no ‘sacred cow’. &nbsp

Passwords authentication has become a widely recognized element of computer security for confirming users' identity before access can be granted or repudiated to an intended information contents or applications of the system. Graphical password schemes are a login option that use images instead of alphanumeric strings for the purpose of user authentication. This alternative means of authentication is mainly designed to achieve good memorability and secutity of any choosen passwords based on widely known superiority effect of images over random strings. This paper provides a comprehensive survey of graphical password schemes and reports a memorability comparison between them. It also highlights how different memory tasks affect the graphical passwords and the relationship between the
