In this activity students try to identify the best time of year and place to position spotters to see possible tornado outbreaks. In order to do so they study a graphic that depicts the mean number of days per century with at least one F2 or greater tornado touching down. They then follow the instructions on their handouts and present their information using a poster, a mockup of a newspaper, a multimedia presentation, or a play. The site provides the required handouts and suggestions for extensions. Educational levels: High school, Middle school

PREP provided $3,500 towards the project which was matched by municipal funds to pay for consulting advice on improving the regulations. The Planning Board provided exceptional in-kind match on the project, with many hours of work spent by a volunteer engineer serving on the Board. On February 12th 2009, Hampton’s Innovative Land Use Team, in coordination with NROC, hosted a community workshop on stormwater issues that was well attended by municipal officials, town staff, and members of the public. After many revisions, the Planning Board formally adopted the approved stormwater management provisions into the town site plan and subdivision regulations at their July 2009 meeting

Bepress Digital Commons, Outreach Environmental Survey and Repository Population Recommendations For the University of Maine

Report for the University of Maine. Included in this report are a set of general recommendations for building repository collections and breakdowns of some available collections in each of ten departments/schools. These breakdowns can be particularly useful to the repository manager or a liaison in identifying available collections prior to contacting or presenting to the department. It is recommended that the liaison or point person for each department receive the general recommendations in this report, as well as the breakdown for his or her specific departments. Further research into the collections is also recommended since many lists of publications and other output exist but are not specifically detailed here. While there is a plethora of material for which a repository would be an appropriate venue, we recommend starting with “low‐hanging fruit,” material that is easily available from those willing to be early adopters, and using that to begin populating the repository with examples that will entice further participation from other faculty and departments. Based on searches of faculty citations in 10 departments at University of Maine, Orono and environmental surveys of 10 departments, the following recommendations can be made

Looking to the future ... Distance Education Issues in Nebraska

    Get PDF
The Nebraska Network 21 (NN21) Action Team on Distance Education/Outreach has studied a variety of issues related to distance education in order to better serve the people of Nebraska. Distance education has grown rapidly in Nebraska, but is clearly in its infancy. Many important issues still are being identified and are far from understood. The possibilities of distance education are yet to be fully realized. But in a state with a small, spread-out population such as ours -- perhaps in any state -- it would seem that distance education holds great promise for making many forms of education accessible to all. To further our understanding of the field of distance learning, the Action Team commissioned a series of White Papers on topics significant to distance education in Nebraska. These papers were first presented at a conference in September 1998. Summaries of the papers in this publication are intended to inform policymakers and anyone else interested in distance education about what the study of these topics yielded. These summaries are also designed to stimulate discussion
