Religion, memory and reconciliation in the new South Africa: an African interpretation

    Get PDF
South Africa is faced with the challenge of reconciling the memory of the past. The widespread desire to live in peace exists in tension of two extreme possibilities: either to take refuge in amnesia by forgetting the past and moving forward or to remember by making rigid recourse to the past and paralysing the present. These two extreme positions find expression in the collectivity of the community and the nation state. The victim of their tension is the individual in the form of identity crisis as a result of disfigurement. This thesis examines this tension and offers the African marriage covenant as a multi-dimensional model for memory and reconciliation for resolving this tension. Having introduced the thesis in Chapter One, Chapter Two stipulates African hermeneutics of memory and African marriage covenant as its methodology and analytical tool respectively. Chapter Three analyses the different aspects of memory as embodied in the African marriage covenant in terms of meaning and understanding, forms and types and preservation. Similar analysis of identity formation is in Chapter Four. Chapter Five discusses the relationship between memory, truth and healing. Chapter Six postulates memory as the true means for reconciliation. Concluding the thesis, Chapter Seven advances important features and implications of the African marriage covenant for memory and reconciliation in South Africa

Divine Reality and the Principle of Sufficient Reason: A Philosophical Analysis

    Get PDF
The cosmological postulation that there cannot be an “effect” without a “cause” is the underlying predicate of the Principle of Sufficient Reason (PSR). PSR states that everything must have a sufficient reason, cause, or foundation. Some theologians consider the above notions to be fideism, preferring to think that God's knowledge is founded on human reason, whereas “intelligent design” is a two-tiered argument that uses design to show the existence of a “Divine Realty” (God). Reality is subjective and is built indirectly depending on human perspective. The paper, therefore, aimed to philosophically analyze the Principle of Sufficient Reason to explain the notion of a divine reality. This analytical philosophical research employs the descriptive and conceptual analysis approaches and reveals that PSR, like other concepts, is not only improbable, but is also contradictory to divine knowledge. It concludes that although PSR uses contradictory terms such as “necessity” and “contingency” and fails to provide adequate justification for the existence of a divine reality, it could be justified that a “Divine Reality” (God or necessary being) must have a “sufficient reason” to exist

    Get PDF
For extended trips, when electric vehicle (EV) drivers require a charge while on the move, off-board ultra-fast chargers represent the optimal solution, providing significantly reduced charging times for EV batteries. As a result, ultra-fast battery charging has become a critical focus in the global advancement of electric mobility. Current research in power electronics for EV charging applications is centred on developing high-power chargers capable of substantially increasing charging power, thereby minimising charging durations. Additionally, EVs can enhance efficiency and high-quality power delivery by implementing vehicle-to-microgrid (V2µG) technology. This paper examines the standards for ultra-fast charging stations and explores various fast charging methodologies. It also explores various power electronic topologies, the modular design approach used in ultra-fast charging systems, and their integration into standalone microgrids. Lastly, the paper addresses advanced control techniques tailored for ultra-fast chargers

Migration and religious socialization in Nigeria: the Fulanization dilemma

    Get PDF
Migration has remarkably influenced the development of civilization and the establishment of cultural borders throughout history. In the case of Nigeria, one of the negative impacts of migration has been the violent seizure of ancestral lands by the Fulani as part of a strategy to 'fulanize' and 'Islamize' the Nigerian nation. This study investigates the links between human migration and religious socialization in Africa, particularly Nigeria. The paper employs the descriptive and phenomenological approaches and bases its arguments on the theoretical foundations of Durkheimian and Weberian theories. The paper argues that regional mobility, with its religious socializing effects, affects national politics, government, the economy, and other national domains. It concludes that African countries should include international migration in their plans and national development goals to make their countries safer
