Effects of pulsed electric field-assisted osmotic dehydration and edible coating on the recovery of anthocyanins from in vitro digested berries
Berry fruits, such as strawberries and blueberries, are rich sources of anthocyanins. Several studies have been made on the impact of non-thermal treatments on safety, shelf-life and nutritional characteristics of such products, but the effects of these processes on anthocyanin stability during digestion in the gastrointestinal tract are still not completely clear. The aim of this study was to assess the recovery of anthocyanins after simulated gastrointestinal digestion of (1) strawberry samples, pre-treated with pulsed electric field (PEF) at 100 or 200 V\ub7cm 121, prior to osmotic dehydration (OD), and (2) blueberry samples coated with chitosan and procyanidin. After digestion, a significantly higher content of cyanidin-3-O-glucoside and malvidin-3-O-glucoside was quantified by LC-MS/MS in processed strawberry and blueberry samples, compared with the controls. The highest recovery of cyanidin-3-O-glucoside was detected in digested strawberry samples osmotically dehydrated with trehalose. The recovery of malvidin-3-O-glucoside was highest in digested blueberries coated with chitosan and stored for 14 days, compared with untreated samples or samples coated with chitosan and procyanidin. Our study shows the potential of mild PEF treatments combined with OD, or the use of edible coating, to obtain shelf-stable products without substantially affecting the composition or the stability of anthocyanins during digestion in the upper gastrointestinal tract
Improving the nutritional performance of gluten-free pasta with potato peel autohydrolysis extract
The potato processing industry produces peels, a good source of fibres, minerals and antioxidants, which could
be recovered and used in the production of added-value products, such as gluten-free (GF) foods especially
designed for the celiac population.
This work is focused on the application of the bioactive fraction extracted from potato peels into GF pasta.
Subcritical water extraction (autohydrolysis, AH) was performed on potato peel, and the obtained AH liquid
extract was characterized in terms of total phenolic content and antioxidant activity. The selected AH temperature
(220 °C at 2.2 MPa) was applied to peels from Kennebec, Neiker and Agria potato varieties, and the
Agria extract was selected for application in GF pasta, as this was the one with higher antioxidant activity.
The impact of Agria potato peel autohydrolysis extract on the nutritional composition and cooking quality of
pasta was assessed. Results confirmed that the GF pasta enriched with potato peel extract presented suitable
technological properties, coupled with attractive colour and with increased total phenolic content and antioxidant
activity, which can contribute to improve the offer of GF products in the marketinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Controlling quantum entanglement through photocounts
We present a protocol to generate and control quantum entanglement between
the states of two subsystems (the system ) by making measurements on
a third subsystem (the monitor ), interacting with . For
the sake of comparison we consider first an ideal, or instantaneous projective
measurement, as postulated by von Neumann. Then we compare it with the more
realistic or generalized measurement procedure based on photocounting on . Further we consider that the interaction term (between and
) contains a quantum nondemolition variable of and discuss
the possibility and limitations for reconstructing the initial state of from information acquired by photocounting on .Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. Rev
Craniotomia Orbitozigomática Em Três Peças: Dicas E Truques
Objective: Didactically describe the orbitozygomatic craniotomy made in three pieces. Method: This approach was performed, from 2002 to 2011, in 49 patients admitted at Beneficência Portuguesa of São Paulo Hospital. Results: Twenty-seven patients had vascular lesions and twenty-two suffered for intracranial skull base tumors. The vascular lesions varied from cavernous angiomas inside the mesencephalum, high bifurcation basilar tip aneurysms, superior cerebellar arteries aneurysms and arteriovenous malformations in the interpeduncular cistern. Skull base tumors as meningiomas, interpeduncular hamartomas and third ventricle floor gliomas were among the neoplastic lesions approached. We had no permanent injuries and minimal transient complications had occurred. Conclusion: It is a descriptive text, organized in the sequence of the main stages in which such a craniotomy is performed, describing in details the technique in which this group of evolutionarily authors came to accomplish the task. © 2016, Associacao Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria. Experimental implementation of a NMR entanglement witness
Entanglement witnesses (EW) allow the detection of entanglement in a quantum
system, from the measurement of some few observables. They do not require the
complete determination of the quantum state, which is regarded as a main
advantage. On this paper it is experimentally analyzed an entanglement witness
recently proposed in the context of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR)
experiments to test it in some Bell-diagonal states. We also propose some
optimal entanglement witness for Bell-diagonal states. The efficiency of the
two types of EW's are compared to a measure of entanglement with tomographic
cost, the generalized robustness of entanglement. It is used a GRAPE algorithm
to produce an entangled state which is out of the detection region of the EW
for Bell-diagonal states. Upon relaxation, the results show that there is a
region in which both EW fails, whereas the generalized robustness still shows
entanglement, but with the entanglement witness proposed here with a better
performance
Identification of QTLs for grain yield and other traits in tropical maize under high and low soil-nitrogen environments.
Article purchased; Published online: 03 Nov 2017Low soil Nitrogen (low-N) is one of the most important abiotic stresses responsible for significant yield losses in maize (Zea mays. L.). The development and commercialization of low N tolerant genotypes can contribute to improved food security in developing countries. However, selection for low N tolerance is difficult because it is a complex trait with strong interaction between genotypes and environments. Marker assisted breeding holds great promise for improving such complex traits more efficiently in less time, but requires markers associated with the trait of interest. In this study, 150 BC2F1 families of CML 444 x CML 494 were evaluated at two location for two consecutive seasons to identify SNP markers associated with quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for yield and other agronomic traits under low- and high-N environments. A total of 13 QTLs were identified with 158 SNP markers, of which nine and four QTLs were detected under low- and high-N environments, respectively. Five QTLs one each for grain yield (qgy-1), days to silking (qdts-1) and anthesis- silking interval (qasi-6), and two for stay green characteristic (qsg-1 and qsg-4) were close to their adjacent markers, with an interval of 0.7 to 5.2 cM between them and explained phenotypic variance of 9 to 21%. These QTLs would be invaluable for rapid introgression of genomic regions into maize populations using marker assisted selection (MAS) approaches. However, further validation of these QTLs is needed before use in MAS
Symmetry forbidden morphologies and domain boundaries in nanoscale graphene islands
The synthesis of graphene nanoislands with tailored quantum properties requires an atomic control of the morphology and crystal structure. As one reduces their size down to the nanometer scale, domain boundary and edge energetics, as well as nucleation and growth mechanisms impose different stability and kinetic landscape from that at the microscale. This offers the possibility to synthesize structures that are exclusive to the nanoscale, but also calls for fundamental growth studies in order to control them. By employing high-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy we elucidate the atomic stacking configurations, domain boundaries, and edge structure of graphene nanoislands grown on Ni(1 1 1) by CVD and post-annealed at different temperatures. We find a non-conventional multistep mechanism that separates the thermal regimes for growth, edge reconstruction, and final stacking configuration, leading to nanoisland morphologies that are incompatible with their stacking symmetry. Whole islands shift their stacking configuration during cooling down, and others present continuous transitions at the edges. A statistical analysis of the domain structures obtained at different annealing temperatures reveals how polycrystalline, ill-defined structures heal into shape-selected islands of a single predominant stacking. The high crystallinity and the control on morphology and edge structure makes these graphene nanoislands ideal for their application in optoelectronics and spintronics
