Phase diagram of a model for a binary mixture of nematic molecules on a Bethe lattice
We investigate the phase diagram of a discrete version of the Maier-Saupe
model with the inclusion of additional degrees of freedom to mimic a
distribution of rodlike and disklike molecules. Solutions of this problem on a
Bethe lattice come from the analysis of the fixed points of a set of nonlinear
recursion relations. Besides the fixed points associated with isotropic and
uniaxial nematic structures, there is also a fixed point associated with a
biaxial nematic structure. Due to the existence of large overlaps of the
stability regions, we resorted to a scheme to calculate the free energy of
these structures deep in the interior of a large Cayley tree. Both
thermodynamic and dynamic-stability analyses rule out the presence of a biaxial
phase, in qualitative agreement with previous mean-field results

Canine parvovirus 2c infection in central Portugal
Canine parvovirus (CPV) has been evolving, generating new genetic and antigenic variants throughout the world. This Study was conducted to determine the types of CPV circulating in dogs in Figueira da Foz, Portugal. Thirty fecal samples, collected between 2006 and 2007 from dogs with clinical signs of CPV infection, were tested for CPV by a rapid, in-clinic, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA)/immunomigration test, by conventional real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and by minor-groove binding TaqMan PCR. Of the 29 PCR-positive samples, 15 were identified as CPV-2b and 14 as CPV-2c. No CPV-2a was detected. The sensitivity of the ELISA test was 82.76% compared with the PCR assays. No significant associations were found between CPV type, clinical outcome, breed, vaccination status, or age
An indicator system for surface water quality in river basins
Public utilities, agricultural and industrial economical sectors and ecosystems depend
on the water supplied by the natura environment. These water needs, the European Water Framework Directive requirements and the key surface water pollution problems identified at a River Basin scale, lead to the development of a water quality indicator system for surface
waters. This is an environmental tool, which allows the assessment of the pressure-stateimpact of human activities on surface water quality.
This paper presents a methodology based on the conceptual model Pressure State Response, and on an environmental description of the Portuguese Ave River Basin, based on chemical and hydro-morphological water quality elements, due to the lack of information regarding biological elements.
It is shown that the most relevant questions for the implementation of an indicator system for the surface waters of this river basin are: eutrophication, contamination by bacterias, presence of organic mater, oxidation state and organic metals emission
Fitosanidade. Resumo n. 185
Evaluating the impact of sprouting conditions on the glucosinolate content of Brassica oleracea sprouts
The glucosinolates content of brassica plants is a distinctive characteristic, representing a healthy advan-
tage as many of these compounds are associated to antioxidant and anti-carcinogenic properties. Brassica
sprouts are still an underutilized source of these bioactive compounds. In this work, four varieties of bras-
sica sprouts (red cabbage, broccoli, Galega kale and Penca cabbage), including two local varieties from the
North of Portugal, were grown to evaluate the glucosinolate profile and myrosinase activity during the
sprouting. Also the influence of light/darkness exposure during sprouting on the glucosinolate content
was assessed. Glucosinolate content and myrosinase activity of the sprouts was evaluated by HPLC meth-
ods. All sprouts revealed a higher content of aliphatic glucosinolates than of indole glucosinolates, con-
trary to the profile described for most of brassica mature plants. Galega kale sprouts had the highest
glucosinolate content, mainly sinigrin and glucoiberin, which are recognized for their beneficial health
effects. Penca cabbage sprouts were particularly richer in glucoraphanin, who was also one of the major
compounds in broccoli sprouts. Red cabbage showed a higher content of progoitrin. Regarding myrosi-
nase activity, Galega kale sprouts showed the highest values, revealing that the use of light/dark cycles
and a sprouting phase of 7?9 days could be beneficial to preserve the glucosinolate content of this variety.B514-8F2F-A1FB | Ana ValeN/
Stellar parameters for stars of the CoRoT exoplanet field
Aims:To support the computation and evolutionary interpretation of periods
associated with the rotational modulation, oscillations, and variability of
stars located in the CoRoT fields, we are conducting a spectroscopic survey for
stars located in the fields already observed by the satellite. These
observations allow us to compute physical and chemical parameters for our
stellar sample. Method: Using spectroscopic observations obtained with UVES/VLT
and Hydra/Blanco, and based on standard analysis techniques, we computed
physical and chemical parameters (, , ,
, , , and ) for a large
sample of CoRoT targets. Results: We provide physical and chemical parameters
for a sample comprised of 138 CoRoT targets. Our analysis shows the stars in
our sample are located in different evolutionary stages, ranging from the main
sequence to the red giant branch, and range in spectral type from F to K. The
physical and chemical properties for the stellar sample are in agreement with
typical values reported for FGK stars. However, we report three stars
presenting abnormal lithium behavior in the CoRoT fields. These parameters
allow us to properly characterize the intrinsic properties of the stars in
these fields. Our results reveal important differences in the distributions of
metallicity, , and evolutionary status for stars belonging to
different CoRoT fields, in agreement with results obtained independently from
ground-based photometric surveys. Conclusions: Our spectroscopic catalog, by
providing much-needed spectroscopic information for a large sample of CoRoT
targets, will be of key importance for the successful accomplishment of several
different programs related to the CoRoT mission, thus it will help further
boost the scientific return associated with this space mission.Comment: 43 pages, 17 figures, accepted for publication in A&
Tilt Test in Elderly Patients with Syncope of Unknown Etiology: Experience with Pharmacological Stimulation with Nitroglycerin
