Important problem features for the promotion of onceptual understanding in introductory electronics

This article describes an investigation in which a set of problems, specifically designed to develop conceptual understanding in introductory Electronics, were used as a teaching and learning strategy in an active learning setting. Some of the suggested problems have similarities with those presented by concept inventories, in that they are designed to address common students’ misconceptions. The goal, however, is not to detect misconceptions, but rather to challenge students’ conceptual reasoning. The investigation setting, integrated in the project-based learning environment established at the Higher Education Polytechnic School of Águeda (University of Aveiro, Portugal) since 2001, was designed as a source of abundant data, that included field notes, students written responses to the open problems and interviews. Qualitative analysis was used to identify important problem features that seem to prompt conceptual reasoning, and to evaluate the approach. Although the setting and the learning environment are described in some detail, to set the scene and provide context for the issues being discussed, this article concentrates on the problems and their important features in the promotion of conceptual understanding. Examples of the various formats of problems used in the investigation are provided to better illustrate the discussion. Results of the analysis indicate that the use of such problems does seem to have a positive impact in the conceptual reasoning of the students. However, students also report a generalized feeling of insecurity, for every new problem presented an emotional challenge, as well as a challenge to their assumptions. The analysis also indicates that it is important to seek a proper balance between the qualitative and quantitative components of the problems suggested to the students. As a conclusion, the article will offer a summary of the most important problem features in the promotion of conceptual understanding, as far as the results of this investigation are concerned

Electrical circuit analysis and technical english: articulation in a project-based learning environment

This paper describes the integration of Electrical Circuit Analysis and Technical English in the same curricular module, in the context of a Project Based Learning (PBL) environment. The idea consists in taking advantage of the PBL setting to provide a context for the learning of the two different subjects in an articulated manner. Efficient protocols to control glioma growth

In this paper we consider a mathematical model to describe glioma evolution. The model is established combining the viscoelastic behaviour of the brain tissue with a mass conservation law that takes into account the effect of chemotherapy. For the non Fickian model we establish an upper bound for the tumor mass that leads to a sufficient condition to control tumor growth. Based on the theoretical upper bound, protocol for chemotherapy treatment are proposed. Numerical experiments are included to illustrate the behaviour of the model as well as the efficiency of the presented protocols

The Lack of Legal Capacity of Indians in Brazil — Protection or Exclusion?

In order to identify the encoding process of the legal situation of the indigenous ethnic group in the Brazilian, with special emphasis on the legal capacity of these levels, we identified a number of citizens considered, specifically 350,438 persons, who in their day-to-day contact and form part of the whole society in the making of the various legal transactions. As a consequence of this fact, a number of important issues are inevitable, such as the validity of the performance of legal activities by these citizens. Because of loopholes, which legislation applies? What parameter should be used to establish the degree of legal capacity of a person belonging to an indigenous group? Last but not the least, the conceptual confusion in the legislation itself when dealing with “forest” population and “Indians” is an extra factor of complexity, with potential impact on the status of the studied citizens and may question whether they are actually subject to protection or discrimination.No sentido de identificar o processo de codificação da situação jurídica dos povos indígenas no ordenamento brasileiro, com especial ênfase nos níveis da capacidade jurídica destes, identificamos um número considerado de cidadãos, especificamente 350.438 pessoas, que no seu dia-a-dia entram em contacto e formam parte do conjunto da sociedade na celebração dos vários negócios jurídicos. Como consequência dessa realidade, um número importante de questões serão inevitáveis, como por exemplo: validez dos actos jurídicos celebrados por estes cidadãos? Em virtude das lacunas legislativas, qual a legislação aplicável? Que parâmetro utilizar para estabelecer o grau de capacidade jurídica de uma pessoa pertencente a um grupo indígena? Da mesma forma, não menos importante, se a confusão conceitual na própria legislação ao usar os termos silvícolas ou índios, provoca alguma alteração no estatuto de cidadania dos mesmos e se realmente a sua incapacidade jurídica é objecto de proteção ou discriminação

Relatório de estágio

O presente documento, foi elaborado tendo em vista a obtenção do grau de Mestre em Ensino da Educação Física nos Ensinos Básicos e Secundários pela Universidade da Beira Interior. De realçar que o seu conteúdo não é o conteúdo de uma investigação típica, pois surge na sequência do estágio pedagógico que decorreu ao longo do ano lectivo 2009/2010. Representando a última etapa de um caminho que se iniciou à dois anos com o ingresso no 2º Clico de Ensino da Universidade da Beira Interior (Mestrado de Ensino de Educação Física nos Ensinos Básicos e Secundários), este documento pretende fazer uma apanhado do ano de estágio efectuado na Escola Secundária Frei Heitor Pinto sobe a orientação do Professor Doutor Júlio Martins (orientador da universidade) e Professor Carlos Elavai (orientador da escola). A este nível, é importante referir que a grande maioria do trabalho desenvolvido não foi trabalho individual, mas de grupo, onde o Núcleo de Estágio constituído pelos professores estagiários André Silvestre, João Oliveira e Marcela Rodrigues debateu ideias e discutiu assuntos na tentativa de desenvolver um trabalho competente e adequado às problemáticas existentes. O estágio pedagógico representa o culminar de seis anos de estudo (quatro anos de licenciatura em Ciências do Desporto e dois anos no referido mestrado), onde só através desta etapa foi possível ter a verdadeira percepção dos acontecimentos que envolvem o mundo do trabalho na escola, visto que nos anos anteriores não houve nenhum contacto directo com esta realidade. Sendo assim, este estágio pretendia abranger um conjunto de funções e procedimentos que nos facultavam a possibilidade e conhecer a organização e estruturação dos processos de ensino. Estas actividades fomentam nos intervenientes, a noção de como o ensino é efectuado, como é organizado, quais são os processos de adaptação dos alunos, de modo a que se possa agir de forma personalizada sobre estes. Além do contacto com os alunos, tivemos a oportunidade de lidar com todos os outros os agentes indispensáveis para o funcionamento da escola, como por exemplo os outros professores e os auxiliares da acção educativa. Sobe a forma de relatório final de estágio, pretende-se fazer aqui uma breve reflexão individual sobre o trabalho realizado na escola no decorrer do ano lectivo, fazendo alusão à escola, aos alunos e ao planeamento inerente à actividade docente

Solar radiation prediction using wavelet decomposition

Nowadays, a substantial part of the agricultural production takes place in greenhouses, which enable to tune the crop growing by modifying, artificially, the environmental conditions and the plant’s nutrition. The main goal is to optimise the balance between the production economic return and the operation costs of the climate actuators. Severe environment and market restrictions jointly with an increasing tendency of the fuel price motivate the development of more “intelligent” energy regulators. In order to formulate the best options for a production plan, this type of artificial supervisors must be able to formulate close predictions on a large set of variables. Considering, for instance, the air temperature control inside a greenhouse, the system must be able to close predict the evolution of the solar radiation since this is the exogenous variable which most influences the thermal load during the day. In this paper, an artificial neural network, in conjunction with a wavelet decomposition strategy, is used for forecasting, an hour ahead, the instantaneous solar radiation energy density sampled at one minute interval.
