    The happy husband? Working wives, homemakers, and life satisfaction

    Competing theoretical perspectives lead to alternative hypotheses as to whether the husbands of homemakers or men with employed wives are happier. All things considered, multi-level models using ISSP data from 29 countries find that homemakers’ husbands are modestly happier than husbands whose wives are full-time workers. This finding is robust to controls for the economic and family life variables which are hypothesized to mediate the relationship between wife’s work status and husband’s happiness. Cross-level interactions between country characteristics and wife’s work status suggest that public child care may narrow this gap in husband’s happiness

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Behavioral surveys help interpret the magnitude of HIV/AIDS. We analyzed indicators of knowledge on HIV/AIDS and condom use among sub populations selected for behavioral surveillance in Ethiopia.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We used 2005 HIV/AIDS behavioral data from ten target groups. These were female sex workers, defense forces, police force, pastoralists, truck drivers, intercity bus drivers, road construction workers, teachers, factory workers and people in ANC catchment areas.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Data from 14,524 individuals were analyzed. The majority were males (63.6%). Overall, knowledge of the three preventive methods, misconceptions and comprehensive knowledge was 57%, 75% and 18.5%, respectively. Female sex workers and the defense force showed some behavioral change in using a condom during the most recent sexual encounter and consistently used a condom with non-regular sexual partners and paying partners. Women, pastoralists and the illiterate were less likely to use condom.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Misconceptions about the transmission of HIV were high and comprehensive knowledge about HIV & AIDS was low, particularly among pastoralists. Consistent condom use and condom use during the last sexual encounter were high among both female sex workers and defense force employees, both with paying and non-regular sexual partners. This might be a positive sign, though a considerable proportion in each target group did not report using a condom during sex with non-regular partners.</p

    Monte Carlo simulation method for Laughlin-like states in a disk geometry

    We discuss an alternative accurate Monte Carlo method to calculate the ground-state energy and related quantities for Laughlin states of the fractional quantum Hall effect in a disk geometry. This alternative approach allows us to obtain accurate bulk regime (thermodynamic limit) values for various quantities from Monte Carlo simulations with a small number of particles (much smaller than that needed with standard Monte Carlo approaches).Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures, 2 table

    Thermodynamic Study of Excitations in a 3D Spin Liquid

    In order to characterize thermal excitations in a frustrated spin liquid, we have examined the magnetothermodynamics of a model geometrically frustrated magnet. Our data demonstrate a crossover in the nature of the spin excitations between the spin liquid phase and the high-temperature paramagnetic state. The temperature dependence of both the specific heat and magnetization in the spin liquid phase can be fit within a simple model which assumes that the spin excitations have a gapped quadratic dispersion relation.Comment: 5 figure

    Field-induced breakdown of the quantum Hall effect

    A numerical analysis is made of the breakdown of the quantum Hall effect caused by the Hall electric field in competition with disorder. It turns out that in the regime of dense impurities, in particular, the number of localized states decreases exponentially with the Hall field, with its dependence on the magnetic and electric field summarized in a simple scaling law. The physical picture underlying the scaling law is clarified. This intra-subband process, the competition of the Hall field with disorder, leads to critical breakdown fields of magnitude of a few hundred V/cm, consistent with observations, and accounts for their magnetic-field dependence \propto B^{3/2} observed experimentally. The authors demonstrate that adherent cells primarily utilize glycolysis, whereas suspended cells rely on oxidative phosphorylation for their ATP needs. Akt phosphorylation transduces adhesion-mediated regulation of energy metabolism, by regulating translocation of glucose transporters (GLUT1) to the cell membrane and thus, cellular glucose uptake and glycolysis.     Anisotropic magnetic susceptibility of multiwalled carbon nanotubes

    Magnetic susceptibility of partially aligned multiwalled carbon nanotubes has been studied using superconducting quantum interference device magnetometry. Partial alignment of multiwalled nanotubes was produced by uniaxially straining composites of carbon nanotubes embedded in polymer matrices. The degree of alignment was determined by x-ray diffraction. The observed magnetic response is diamagnetic and anisotropic with the component along the nanotubes less diamagnetic than that of the perpendicular. The observed anisotropy is consistent with theoretical predictions, but it contradicts earlier experimental findings

    Enhanced magnetocaloric effect in frustrated magnets

    The magnetothermodynamics of strongly frustrated classical Heisenberg antiferromagnets on kagome, garnet, and pyrochlore lattices is examined. The field induced adiabatic temperature change (dT/dH)_S is significantly larger for such systems compared to ordinary non-frustrated magnets and also exceeds the cooling rate of an ideal paramagnet in a wide range of fields. An enhancement of the magnetocaloric effect is related to presence of a macroscopic number of soft modes in frustrated magnets below the saturation field. Theoretical predictions are confirmed with extensive Monte Carlo simulations.Comment: 7 page

    The quantum Hall effect in graphene - a theoretical perspective

    This short theoretical review deals with some essential ingredients for the understanding of the quantum Hall effect in graphene in comparison with the effect in conventional two-dimensional electron systems with a parabolic band dispersion. The main difference between the two systems stems from the "ultra-relativistic" character of the low-energy carriers in graphene, which are described in terms of a Dirac equation, as compared to the non-relativistic Schr\"odinger equation used for electrons with a parabolic band dispersion. In spite of this fundamental difference, the Hall resistance quantisation is universal in the sense that it is given in terms of the universal constant h/e^2 and an integer number, regardless of whether the charge carriers are characterised by Galilean or Lorentz invariance, for non-relativistic or relativistic carriers, respectively.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures; brief review article for Comptes Rendus de l'Academie des Sciences; references added with respect to previous versio
