Experimental characterization of the structural response of adobe arches
Earth was one of the first construction materials used by mankind and has been used as a building material since ancient times until the present days. Its qualities related to thermal comfort, low cost or simple construction techniques have contributed to such a long tradition throughout the world with several different architectural expressions, integrating the culture and history of each region.
With the wide propagation of steel and concrete structures, there has been a general loss of the traditional knowledge in earth construction. This type of construction presents important structural fragilities and requires a special maintenance to preserve its qualities. In order to understand the structural behaviour of this type of structures, the associated construction methods and processes have to be considered.
Aveiro University has been developing studies on adobe constructions, with research on the material mechanical characterization, experimental study of the structural behaviour of adobe masonry walls and, more recently, in the development of a detailed survey methodology for the characterization of buildings in Aveiro district.
Integrated in these studies, arches with different geometries were built using adobe blocks and traditional construction methods. These arches were tested under different types of vertical loading (distributed symmetrical, distributed non-symmetrical and point load) until collapse. The experimental tests performed reproduce the typical loading conditions of these structures during construction and use. The tests conducted, the results obtained and the main conclusions attained are described in this paper

Parallel structurally-symmetric sparse matrix-vector products on multi-core processors
We consider the problem of developing an efficient multi-threaded
implementation of the matrix-vector multiplication algorithm for sparse
matrices with structural symmetry. Matrices are stored using the compressed
sparse row-column format (CSRC), designed for profiting from the symmetric
non-zero pattern observed in global finite element matrices. Unlike classical
compressed storage formats, performing the sparse matrix-vector product using
the CSRC requires thread-safe access to the destination vector. To avoid race
conditions, we have implemented two partitioning strategies. In the first one,
each thread allocates an array for storing its contributions, which are later
combined in an accumulation step. We analyze how to perform this accumulation
in four different ways. The second strategy employs a coloring algorithm for
grouping rows that can be concurrently processed by threads. Our results
indicate that, although incurring an increase in the working set size, the

High-resolution radio imaging of two luminous quasars beyond redshift 4.5
Context. Radio-loud active galactic nuclei in the early Universe are rare.
The quasars J0906+6930 at redshift z=5.47 and J2102+6015 at z=4.57 stand out
from the known sample with their compact emission on milliarcsecond (mas)
angular scale with high (0.1-Jy level) flux densities measured at GHz radio
frequencies. This makes them ideal targets for very long baseline
interferometry (VLBI) observations. Aims. By means of VLBI imaging we can
reveal the inner radio structure of quasars and model their brightness
distribution to better understand the geometry of the jet and the physics of
the sources. Methods. We present sensitive high-resolution VLBI images of
J0906+6930 and J2102+6015 at two observing frequencies, 2.3 and 8.6 GHz. The
data were taken in an astrometric observing programme involving a global
five-element radio telescope array. We combined the data from five different
epochs from 2017 February to August. Results. For one of the highest redshift
blazars known, J0906+6930, we present the first-ever VLBI image obtained at a
frequency below 8 GHz. Based on our images at 2.3 and 8.6 GHz, we confirm that
this source has a sharply bent helical inner jet structure within ~3 mas from
the core. The quasar J2102+6015 shows an elongated radio structure in the
east-west direction within the innermost ~2 mas that can be described with a
symmetric three-component brightness distribution model at 8.6 GHz. Because of
their non-pointlike mas-scale structure, these sources are not ideal as
astrometric reference objects. Our results demonstrate that VLBI observing
programmes conducted primarily with astrometric or geodetic goals can be

Covariance matrices and the separability problem
We propose a unifying approach to the separability problem using covariance
matrices of locally measurable observables. From a practical point of view, our
approach leads to strong entanglement criteria that allow to detect the
entanglement of many bound entangled states in higher dimensions and which are
at the same time necessary and sufficient for two qubits. From a fundamental
perspective, our approach leads to insights into the relations between several
known entanglement criteria -- such as the computable cross norm and local

Functional Optimisation of Online Algorithms in Multilayer Neural Networks
We study the online dynamics of learning in fully connected soft committee
machines in the student-teacher scenario. The locally optimal modulation
function, which determines the learning algorithm, is obtained from a
variational argument in such a manner as to maximise the average generalisation
error decay per example. Simulations results for the resulting algorithm are
presented for a few cases. The symmetric phase plateaux are found to be vastly
reduced in comparison to those found when online backpropagation algorithms are
used. A discussion of the implementation of these ideas as practical algorithms
is given
First record of the Central Indo-Pacific reef coral Oulastrea crispata in the Mediterranean Sea
A live colony of a non-indigenous zooxanthellate scleractinian coral was found in shallow water at the west coast of Corsica, western Mediterranean. Its diameter of 6 cm suggests that it has already survived for some years. It was identified as Oulastrea crispata, a species native on near-shore coral reefs in the central Indo-Pacific with a high tolerance for low water temperatures at high latitudes. Based on its morphology it can be distinguished from other zooxanthellate colonial scleractinians in the Mediterranean. O. crispata has a reputation of being a successful colonizer because it is able to settle on a wide variety of substrata and because it utilizes various reproductive strategies as simultaneous hermaphrodite and producer of asexually derived planulae. Owing to its original distribution range in temperate and subtropical waters, it is likely that it will be able to meet a suitable temperature regime in the Mediterranean for further range expansion
