    Thymulin (facteur thymique sérique) and zinc contents of the thymus glands of malnourished children

    Protein-energy malnutrition (PEM) leads to an immune deficiency, which is now well documented. Some investigators have suggested that the associated zinc deficiency is important in thymic involution and changes in cellular immunity. To evaluate the respective roles of nutritional deficiency, infection, and zinc in the alteration of thymic function, we measured the amounts of thymulin (facteur thymique sérique, or FTS) and of Zn in the thymus glands of 58 Senegalese children who died in various stages of malnutrition. In the severe forms (marasmus, kwashiorkor, and marasmic kwashiorkor) the thymus was tiny and contained very little thymulin. The Zn content of the thymus was high whatever the nutritional state of the subject and was related significantly only to the presence of infections. In Senegalese children thymic atrophy and depleted thymulin content are associated with severe PEM but not systemic infection or depleted thymic Zn content. (Résumé d'auteur

    International audienceL'objectif principal de ce projet est de produire une base de donnée de référence couvrant une période de 10 ans pour l'estimation quantitative de lames d'eaux précipitées (LEP). L'objectif est d'utiliser de façon optimale l'ensemble des informations disponibles (radars, pluviomètres horaires et journaliers, données atellite....) afin d'obtenir la meilleure estimation possible de la pluie précipitée. La base de données résultante sera une série de LPE horaire, de 1km2, associée a une estimation des incertitudes sur l'ensemble du territoire français. Cela sera une référence commune pour les hydrologues, permettant des applications telles que le calage des paramètres de modèles, l'evaluation de la valeur ajoutée d'une entrée spatio-temporelle haute résolution pour les modèles hydrologiques ect... / This project main objective is to produce a 10-year reference database of Quantitative Precipitation Estimations (QPE). The objective is to make use optimally at any time of all the available information (radars, hourly and daily rain gauges, satellite data, etc) to obtain the best possible surface precipitation estimation. The resulting data base, will consist of hourly, 1km² gridded QPE and associated estimation uncertainties over the entire French territory. This will represent a common reference for hydrologists useful for various applications such as the calibration of the hydrological model parameters, the assessment of the the added value of high space-time resolution input for hydrological models, etc

    Mechanisms of action of Methylthioadenosine: pathways implicated in neuroprotection in models of Multiple Sclerosis and other neurological diseases

    From 5th European Workshop on Immune-Mediated Inflammatory Diseases (Sitges-Barcelona, Spain. 1-3 December 2010)Background Methylthioadenosine (MTA) has anti-oxidant and anti-proliferative properties and was shown to induce cell protection in hepatic cells. We previously demonstrated that exert immunomodulatory and neuroprotective effects in the animal model of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and other neurological diseases like Parkinson disease, stroke and Epilepsy. Objective To study the mechanisms of action and different pathways implicated in the neuroprotective effect of MTA in neurological diseases. Methods RN22 (Schwnoma cell line) and PC12 (Pheochromocytoma cell line) were used to test the neuroprotective activity of MTA against stress in RN22 and to differentiate neurites in PC12. BV2 cells were used to test the effect of MTA in microglia. Organotypic cerebellum cultures were used to determine MTA effect in demyelination/remyelination. Luminex technology, western blot and ELISA were used in order to study the phosphorylated state of different pathways (AkT/PKB, ERK/MAPK, P38/SAPK or STAT3) and to determine the amount of different cytokines (IL-1β and TNF-α). Ros determination was also done by fluorescence determination. Results In vitro studies revealed that MTA protection against different stresses and its capacity to differentiate neurites implies pathways like ERK/MAPK, P38/SAPK or STAT3. MTA neuroprotective capacity is also related with its ability to reduce ROS production and oxidative stress. MTA was shown to protect against demyelination in cerebellum organotypic cultures treated with LPS or Lysolecithin. Conclusions MTA is neuroprotective in models of MS, Parkinson disease, stroke or Epilepsy. This neuroprotective effect depends on its capacity to protect against demyelination, its anti-oxidant effect and the activation of pathways related with protection against stress and production of neurite differentiation

    Electrophysiological and Imaging Calcium Biomarkers of Aging in Male and Female 5×FAD Mice

    BACKGROUND: In animal models and tissue preparations, calcium dyshomeostasis is a biomarker of aging and Alzheimer\u27s disease that is associated with synaptic dysfunction, neuritic pruning, and dysregulated cellular processes. It is unclear, however, whether the onset of calcium dysregulation precedes, is concurrent with, or is the product of pathological cellular events (e.g., oxidation, amyloid-β production, and neuroinflammation). Further, neuronal calcium dysregulation is not always present in animal models of amyloidogenesis, questioning its reliability as a disease biomarker. OBJECTIVE: Here, we directly tested for the presence of calcium dysregulation in dorsal hippocampal neurons in male and female 5×FAD mice on a C57BL/6 genetic background using sharp electrodes coupled with Oregon-green Bapta-1 imaging. We focused on three ages that coincide with the course of amyloid deposition: 1.5, 4, and 10 months old. METHODS: Outcome variables included measures of the afterhyperpolarization, short-term synaptic plasticity, and calcium kinetics during synaptic activation. Quantitative analyses of spatial learning and memory were also conducted using the Morris water maze. Main effects of sex, age, and genotype were identified on measures of electrophysiology and calcium imaging. RESULTS: Measures of resting Oregon-green Bapta-1 fluorescence showed significant reductions in the 5×FAD group compared to controls. Deficits in spatial memory, along with increases in Aβ load, were detectable at older ages, allowing us to test for temporal associations with the onset of calcium dysregulation. CONCLUSION: Our results provide evidence that reduced, rather than elevated, neuronal calcium is identified in this 5×FAD model and suggests that this surprising result may be a novel biomarker of AD

    This conceptual paper seeks to advance the discourse on the leveraging and legacies of events by examining the planning, management, and leveraging of event portfolios. This examination shifts the common focus from analyzing single events towards multiple events and purposes that can enable cross-leveraging among different events in pursuit of attainment and magnification of specific ends. The following frameworks are proposed: (1) event portfolio planning and leveraging, and (2) analyzing events networks and inter-organizational linkages. These frameworks are intended to provide, at this infancy stage of event portfolios research, a solid ground for building theory on the management of different types and scales of events within the context of a portfolio aimed to obtain, optimize and sustain tourism, as well as broader community benefits

    Spinal Cord Infarction with Multiple Etiologic Factors

    Spinal cord infarction is uncommon and usually presents with sudden onset of paralysis and sensory disturbances. A variety of causes are described, but rarely with multiple factors involved. We report a case of a 63-year-old man with a history of diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and osteoarthritis who presented with acute onset of chest pain, numbness, and weakness associated with episodic hypotension. He had incomplete tetraplegia and was areflexic without spasticity. Pain and temperature sensations were impaired below the C7 dermatome and absent below the T4 dermatome bilaterally. Proprioception and vibration sensations were diminished on the right below the C6 dermatome. Magnetic resonance imaging showed spinal cord infarction affecting C6–T3 segments, and severe cervical and lumbar spine degenerative changes. This case illustrates an unusual presenting symptom of spinal infarction, the need to identify multiple risk factors for spinal cord infarction, and the importance of optimal preventive therapy in patients at risk

    Three Millisecond Pulsars in FERMI LAT Unassociated Bright Sources

    We searched for radio pulsars in 25 of the non-variable, unassociated sources in the Fermi LAT Bright Source List with the Green Bank Telescope at 820 MHz. We report the discovery of three radio and gamma-ray millisecond pulsars (MSPs) from a high Galactic latitude subset of these sources. All of the pulsars are in binary systems, which would have made them virtually impossible to detect in blind gamma-ray pulsation searches. They seem to be relatively normal, nearby (<=2 kpc) millisecond pulsars. These observations, in combination with the Fermi detection of gamma-rays from other known radio MSPs, imply that most, if not all, radio MSPs are efficient gamma-ray producers. The gamma-ray spectra of the pulsars are power-law in nature with exponential cutoffs at a few GeV, as has been found with most other pulsars. The MSPs have all been detected as X-ray point sources. Their soft X-ray luminosities of ~10^{30-31} erg/s are typical of the rare radio MSPs seen in X-rays.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ Letter
