Integrating cogeneration and intermittent waste-heat recovery in food processing: Microturbines vs. ORC systems in the coffee roasting industry
Coffee roasting is a highly energy intensive process wherein a large quantity of heat is discharged from the stack at medium-to-high temperatures. Much of the heat is released from the afterburner, which is required to remove volatile organic compounds and other pollutants from the flue gases. In this work, intermittent waste-heat recovery via thermal energy storage (TES) and organic Rankine cycles (ORCs) is compared to combined heat and power (CHP) based on micro gas-turbines (MGTs) for a coffee roasting plant. With regard to the former, a promising solution is proposed that involves recovering waste heat from the flue gas stream by partial hot-gas recycling at the rotating drum coffee roaster, and coupling this to a thermal store and an ORC engine for power generation. The two solutions (CHP + MGT prime mover vs. waste-heat recovery + ORC engine) are investigated based on mass and energy balances, and a cost assessment methodology is adopted to compare the profitability of three system configurations integrated into the selected roasting process. The case study involves a major Italian roasting plant with a 3,000 kg per hour coffee production capacity. Three options are investigated: (i) intermittent waste-heat recovery from the hot flue-gases with an ORC engine coupled to a TES system; (ii) regenerative topping MGT coupled to the existing modulating gas burner to generate hot air for the roasting process; and (iii) non-regenerative topping MGT with direct recovery of the turbine outlet air for the roasting process. The results show that the profitability of these investments is highly influenced by the natural gas and electricity prices and by the coffee roasting production capacity. The CHP solution via an MGT appears as a more profitable option than waste-heat recovery via an ORC engine primarily due to the intermittency of the heat-source availability and the high electricity cost relative to the cost of natural gas
Observing Single Molecules Complexing with Cucurbit[7]uril through Nanogap Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy.
In recent years, single-molecule sensitivity achievable by surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) has been widely reported. We use this to investigate supramolecular host-guest chemistry with the macrocyclic host cucurbit[7]uril, on a few-to-single-molecule level. A nanogap geometry, comprising individual gold nanoparticles on a planar gold surface spaced by a single layer of molecules, gives intense SERS signals. Plasmonic coupling between the particle and the surface leads to strongly enhanced optical fields in the gap between them, with single-molecule sensitivity established using a modification of the well-known bianalyte method. Changes in the Raman modes of the host molecule are observed when single guests included inside its cavity internally stretch it. Anisotropic intermolecular interactions with the guest are found which show additional distinct features in the Raman modes of the host molecule. The authors acknowledge funding from Walters-Kundert Trust, EPSRC (EP/K028510/1, EP/G060649/1, EP/ H007024/1, ERC LINASS 320503), an ERC starting investigator grant (ASPiRe 240629), EU CUBiHOLE grant and the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL). Metallic elements in exhaled breath condensate of patients with interstitial lung diseases
Epidemiological data support the hypothesis that environmental and occupational agents play an important role in the development of interstitial lung diseases such as idiopathic interstitial pneumonia (IIPs) and sarcoidosis. The aim of this study was to assess the elemental composition of exhaled breath condensate (EBC) in patients with interstitial lung diseases (ILDs) of unknown etiology and healthy subjects as an indirect evaluation of tissue burden, which could improve our understanding of the role of metals in the pathogenesis of ILDs. EBC was obtained from 33 healthy subjects, 22 patients with sarcoidosis, 15 patients with non-specific interstitial pneumonia (NSIP) and 19 with IIPs. Trace elements and toxic metals in the samples were measured by means of inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. There are only small overall differences in the EBC levels of a number of metallic elements among patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), NSIP or sarcoidosis, and no pattern is capable of distinguishing them with a high degree of sensitivity and specificity. However, a pattern of pneumotoxic (Si, Ni) and essential elements (Zn, Se and Cu) with the addition of Co distinguished the patients with ILDs from healthy non-smokers with relatively high degrees of sensitivity (96.4%) and specificity (90.9%). Assessing the elemental composition of EBC in patients with different ILDs seems to provide useful information. The non-invasiveness of the EBC method makes it suitable for patients with pulmonary diseases, although further studies are required to confirm the usefulness of this approach and to better understand the underlying pathophysiological processes
Decreased peripheral health service utilisation during an outbreak of Marburg haemorrhagic fever, Uíge, Angola, 2005.
In 2005, a Marburg haemorrhagic fever (MHF) outbreak occurred in Uíge province, Angola, which had its epicentre in Uíge municipality. Concurrently, a health facility located a considerable distance from the outbreak's epicentre reported a drastic reduction in attendance, possibly due to a remote effect of the ongoing MHF outbreak. Health officials should devise strategies to ensure that communities far from a filovirus haemorrhagic fever epicentre are not adversely affected by interventions at the epicentre and, to the greatest extent possible, ensure that these peripheral communities receive essential medical care during an epidemic
Not smoking is associated with lower risk of hypertension: results of the Olivetti Heart Study.
Few epidemiological investigations evaluated the role of smoking
cessation on blood pressure (BP), and the results are not univocal. Therefore,
the aim of this study was to assess the effect of smoking cessation on the risk
to develop hypertension (HPT) and on BP values.
METHODS: This longitudinal study, with a follow-up period of 8 years, included
the participants of the Olivetti Heart Study. Participants were 430 untreated
normotensive non-diabetic men with normal renal function, examined twice in
1994-95 and in 2002-04. The sample included current smokers (S, n = 212), former
smokers (ES, n = 145) and never smokers (NS, n = 73) at baseline.
RESULTS: Basal body mass index (BMI), systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic
blood pressure (DBP) were significantly higher in ES than in S (ES vs. S; BMI:
27.0 ± 2.5 vs. 26.1 ± 2.9 kg/m(2); P < 0.01; SBP/DBP: 121.2 ± 9.3/80.0 ± 5.8 vs.
19.1 ± 9.9/77.4 ± 6.7 mm Hg; P < 0.05; M ± SD). After 8 years of follow-up, BP
changes (Δ) were significantly lower in ES than in S (ΔSBP/DBP: 12.6 ± 13.4/7.9 ±
8.1 vs. 16.0 ± 14.9/10.3 ± 10.1 mm Hg; P < 0.05; M ± SD), also after adjustment
for potential confounders. Moreover, at the last examination, the overall HPT
prevalence was 33%, with lower values in ES than in S (25 vs. 38%, P = 0.01).
After accounting for age, BP and BMI at baseline, and changes in smoking habit
over the 8-year period, ES still had significant lower risk of HPT than S (odds
ratio 0.30, 95% confidence interval 0.15-0.58; P < 0.01).
CONCLUSIONS: In this sample of healthy men, smoking cessation was associated with
lower BP increment and minor HPT risk, independently of potential confounders
The ratio of soluble fms–like tyrosine kinase 1 to placental growth factor predicts time to delivery and mode of birth in patients with suspected preeclampsia- a secondary analysis of the INSPIRE trial
Background: The ratio of soluble fms–like tyrosine kinase 1 to placental growth factor (sFLT1/PLGF) is a useful biomarker for preeclampsia. Since it is a measure of placental dysfunction, it could also be a predictor of clinical deterioration and fetal tolerance to intrapartum stress.
Objectives: We tested the hypothesis that sFLT1/PLGF ratio predicts time to delivery. Secondary objectives were to examine associations between the sFLT1/PLGF ratio and mode of birth, fetal distress, need for labor induction and birthweight z-score.
Study design: Secondary analysis of the INSPIRE trial, a randomized interventional study on prediction of preeclampsia/eclampsia in which women with suspected preeclampsia were recruited and their blood sFLT1/PLGF ratio was assessed. We stratified participants into three groups according to the ratio result: category 1 (sFLT1/PLGF≤38); category 2 (sFLT1/PLGF>38 and <85); and category 3 (sFLT1/PLGF≥85). We modelled time from sFLT1/PLGF determination to delivery using Kaplan-Meier curves and compared the three ratio categories adjusting for gestational age at sFLT1/PLGF determination and trial arm with Cox Regression. The association between ratio category and mode of delivery, induction of labour and fetal distress was assessed using a multivariable logistic regression adjusting for gestational age at sampling and trial arm. The association between birthweight z-score and sFLT1/PLGF ratio was evaluated using multiple linear regression. Subgroup analysis was conducted in women with no preeclampsia and spontaneous onset of labor; women with preeclampsia; and participants in the non-reveal arm.
Results: Higher ratio categories were associated with a shorter latency from sFLT1/PLGF determination to delivery (37 vs 13 vs 10 days for ratios categories 1-3 respectively), hazards ratio for category 3 ratio of 5.64 (95%CI 4.06-7.84, p<0.001). A sFLT/PlGF ratio≥85 had specificity of 92.7%(95%CI 89.0-95.1%) and sensitivity of 54.72% (95% CI, 41.3-69.5) for prediction of preeclampsia indicated delivery within 2 weeks. A ratio category 3 was also associated with decreased odds of spontaneous vaginal delivery (OR 0.47, 95%CI 0.25-0.89); an almost six fold increased risk of emergency cesarean section (OR 5.89, 95%CI 3.05-11.21); and a three-fold increased risk for intrapartum fetal distress requiring operative delivery or cesarean section (OR 3.04, 95%CI 1.53-6.05) when compared to patients with ratios≤38. Higher ratio categories were also associated with higher odds of induction of labor when compared to ratios category 1 (category 2, OR 2.20, 95%CI 1.02-4.76; category 3, OR 6.0, 95%CI 2.01-17.93); and lower median birthweight z-score. Within subgroups of women a)without preeclampsia and with spontaneous onset of labor and b)women with preeclampsia, the log ratio was significantly higher in patients requiring intervention for fetal distress or failure to progress compared to those who delivered vaginaly without intervention. In the subset of women with no preeclampsia and spontaneous onset of labour, those who required intervention for fetal distress or failure to progress had a significantly higher log ratio than those who delivered vaginaly without needing intervention.
Conclusion: The sFLT1/PLGF ratio might be helpful in risk-stratification of patients who present with suspected preeclampsia regarding clinical deterioration, intrapartum fetal distress and mode of birth (including the need for intervention in labour)
N-(Phenoxyalkyl)amides as MT1 and MT2 ligands: Antioxidant properties and inhibition of Ca2+/CaM-dependent kinase II
Recently a series of chiral N-(phenoxyalkyl)amides have been reported as potent MT(1) and MT(2) melatonergic ligands. Some of these compounds were selected and tested for their antioxidant properties by measuring their reducing effect against oxidation of 2',7'-dichlorodihydrofluorescein (DCFH) in the DCFH-diacetate (DCFH-DA) assay. Among the tested compounds, N-[2-(3-methoxyphenoxy)propyl]butanamide displayed potent antioxidant activity that was stereoselective, the (R)-enantiomer performing as the eutomer. This compound displayed strong cytoprotective activity against H(2)O(2)-induced cytotoxicity resulting slightly more active than melatonin, and performed as Ca(2+)/calmodulin-dependent kinase II (CaMKII) inhibitor, to
