Combustion waves in a model with chain branching reaction and their stability
In this paper the travelling wave solutions in the adiabatic model with
two-step chain branching reaction mechanism are investigated both numerically
and analytically in the limit of equal diffusivity of reactant, radicals and
heat. The properties of these solutions and their stability are investigated in
detail. The behaviour of combustion waves are demonstrated to have similarities
with the properties of nonadiabatic one-step combustion waves in that there is
a residual amount of fuel left behind the travelling waves and the solutions
can exhibit extinction. The difference between the nonadiabatic one-step and
adiabatic two-step models is found in the behaviour of the combustion waves
near the extinction condition. It is shown that the flame velocity drops down
to zero and a standing combustion wave is formed as the extinction condition is
reached. Prospects of further work are also discussed.Comment: pages 32, figures 2

Acquired perforating dermatosis: A clinical and dermatoscopic correlation
Acquired Perforating Dermatosis (APD) is a perforating disease characterized by transepidermal elimination of dermal material [1,2]. This disease usually develops in adulthood. APD has been reported to occur in association with various diseases, but is most commonly associated with dialysis-dependent chronic renal failure (CRF) or diabetes mellitus (DM) [1,2,3,4]. Morton et al found that APD occurs in up to 10% of patients undergoing hemodialysis [5]. Additionally, Saray et al found that sixteen of twenty-two cases with APD were associated with CRF [3]
Testing for sexually transmitted infections in general practice: cross-sectional study
Background: Primary care is an important provider of sexual health care in England. We sought to explore the extent of testing for chlamydia and HIV in general practice and its relation to associated measures of sexual health in two contrasting geographical settings.Methods: We analysed chlamydia and HIV testing data from 64 general practices and one genitourinary medicine (GUM) clinic in Brent (from mid-2003 to mid-2006) and 143 general practices and two GUM clinics in Avon (2004). We examined associations between practice testing status, practice characteristics and hypothesised markers of population need (area level teenage conception rates and Index of Multiple Deprivation, IMD scores).Results: No HIV or chlamydia testing was done in 19% (12/64) of general practices in Brent, compared to 2.1% (3/143) in Avon. In Brent, the mean age of general practitioners (GPs) in Brent practices that tested for chlamydia or HIV was lower than in those that had not conducted testing. Practices where no HIV testing was done had slightly higher local teenage conception rates (median 23.5 vs. 17.4/1000 women aged 15-44, p = 0.07) and served more deprived areas (median IMD score 27.1 vs. 21.8, p = 0.05). Mean yearly chlamydia and HIV testing rates, in practices that did test were 33.2 and 0.6 (per 1000 patients aged 15-44 years) in Brent, and 34.1 and 10.3 in Avon, respectively. In Brent practices only 20% of chlamydia tests were conducted in patients aged under 25 years, compared with 39% in Avon.Conclusions: There are substantial geographical differences in the intensity of chlamydia and HIV testing in general practice. Interventions to facilitate sexually transmitted infection and HIV testing in general practice are needed to improve access to effective sexual health care. The use of routinely-collected laboratory, practice-level and demographic data for monitoring sexual health service provision and informing service planning should be more widely evaluated
Predicting sexual problems in women: The relevance of sexual excitation and sexual inhibition

The official published version can be obtained from the link below.Data from a non-clinical sample of 540 heterosexual women were used to examine the relationships between scores on the Sexual Excitation/Sexual Inhibition Inventory for Women (SESII-W) and ratings of current sexual problems, lifetime arousal difficulty, lifetime orgasm difficulty, and lifetime problems with low sexual interest. Multiple regression analyses also included several demographic/background variables as predictors: age, full-time employment, completed college, children in household, married, health ratings, importance of sex, and whether the woman was in a sexual relationship. The strongest statistical predictors of both current and lifetime sexual problems were the SESII-W inhibition factors Arousal Contingency and Concerns about Sexual Function. Demographic factors did not feature largely in any of the models predicting sexual problems even when statistically significant relationships were found. If future research supports the predictive utility of the SESII-W in identifying women who are more likely to experience sexual difficulties, these scales may be used as prognostic factors in treatment studies.This study was funded, in part, by a grant from the Lilly Centre for Women's Health
Role of the Hospitalist and Maternal Fetal Medicine Physician in Obstetrical Inpatient Care.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to evaluate the role of hospitalists and Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM) subspecialists in obstetrical inpatient care.
STUDY DESIGN: This electronic survey study was offered to members of the American College of Obstetrics & Gynecology (ACOG; n = 1,039) and the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine (SMFM; n = 1,813).
RESULTS: Overall, 607 (21%) respondents completed the survey. Overall, 35% reported that hospitalists provided care in at least one of their hospitals. Compared with ACOG respondents, a higher frequency of SMFM respondents reported comfort with hospitalists providing care for all women on labor and delivery (74.4 vs. 43.5%, p = 0.005) and women with complex issues (56.4 vs. 43.5%, p = 0.004). The majority of ACOG respondents somewhat/completely agreed that hospitalists were associated with decreased adverse events (69%) and improved safety/safety culture (70%). Overall, 35% of ACOG respondents have MFM consultation available with 53% having inpatient coverage. Of these, 85% were satisfied with MFM availability.
CONCLUSION: Over one-third of respondents work in units staffed with hospitalists and more than half have inpatient MFM coverage. It is important to evaluate if and how hospitalists can improve maternal and perinatal outcomes, and the types of hospitals that are best served by them
Mining the UKIDSS GPS: star formation and embedded clusters
Data mining techniques must be developed and applied to analyse the large
public data bases containing hundreds to thousands of millions entries. The aim
of this study is to develop methods for locating previously unknown stellar
clusters from the UKIDSS Galactic Plane Survey catalogue data. The cluster
candidates are computationally searched from pre-filtered catalogue data using
a method that fits a mixture model of Gaussian densities and background noise
using the Expectation Maximization algorithm. The catalogue data contains a
significant number of false sources clustered around bright stars. A large
fraction of these artefacts were automatically filtered out before or during
the cluster search. The UKIDSS data reduction pipeline tends to classify
marginally resolved stellar pairs and objects seen against variable surface
brightness as extended objects (or "galaxies" in the archive parlance). 10% or
66 x 10^6 of the sources in the UKIDSS GPS catalogue brighter than 17
magnitudes in the K band are classified as "galaxies". Young embedded clusters
create variable NIR surface brightness because the gas/dust clouds in which
they were formed scatters the light from the cluster members. Such clusters
appear therefore as clusters of "galaxies" in the catalogue and can be found
using only a subset of the catalogue data. The detected "galaxy clusters" were
finally screened visually to eliminate the remaining false detections due to
data artefacts. Besides the embedded clusters the search also located locations
of non clustered embedded star formation. The search covered an area of 1302
square degrees and 137 previously unknown cluster candidates and 30 previously
unknown sites of star formation were found

A complete set of polarization transfer observables has been measured for the
reaction at and . The total spin transfer and the observable
deduced from the measured polarization transfer observables indicate that
the spin--dipole resonance at has greater
strength than strength, which is consistent with recent experimental and
theoretical studies. The results also indicate a predominance of the spin-flip
and unnatural-parity transition strength in the continuum. The exchange tensor
interaction at a large momentum transfer of is

Micromagnetic simulations of interacting dipoles on a fcc lattice: Application to nanoparticle assemblies
Micromagnetic simulations are used to examine the effects of cubic and axial
anisotropy, magnetostatic interactions and temperature on M-H loops for a
collection of magnetic dipoles on fcc and sc lattices. We employ a simple model
of interacting dipoles that represent single-domain particles in an attempt to
explain recent experimental data on ordered arrays of magnetoferritin
nanoparticles that demonstrate the crucial role of interactions between
particles in a fcc lattice. Significant agreement between the simulation and
experimental results is achieved, and the impact of intra-particle degrees of
freedom and surface effects on thermal fluctuations are investigated.Comment: 10 pages, 9 figure
SUMO chain formation is required for response to replication arrest in S. pombe
SUMO is a ubiquitin-like protein that is post-translationally attached to one or more lysine residues on target proteins. Despite having only 18% sequence identity with ubiquitin, SUMO contains the conserved betabetaalphabetabetaalphabeta fold present in ubiquitin. However, SUMO differs from ubiquitin in having an extended N-terminus. In S. pombe the N-terminus of SUMO/Pmt3 is significantly longer than those of SUMO in S. cerevisiae, human and Drosophila. Here we investigate the role of this N-terminal region. We have used two dimensional gel electrophoresis to demonstrate that S. pombe SUMO/Pmt3 is phosphorylated, and that this occurs on serine residues at the extreme N-terminus of the protein. Mutation of these residues (in pmt3-1) results in a dramatic reduction in both the levels of high Mr SUMO-containing species and of total SUMO/Pmt3, indicating that phosphorylation of SUMO/Pmt3 is required for its stability. Despite the significant reduction in high Mr SUMO-containing species, pmt3-1 cells do not display an aberrant cell morphology or sensitivity to genotoxins or stress. Additionally, we demonstrate that two lysine residues in the N-terminus of S. pombe SUMO/Pmt3 (K14 and K30) can act as acceptor sites for SUMO chain formation in vitro. Inability to form SUMO chains results in aberrant cell and nuclear morphologies, including stretched and fragmented chromatin. SUMO chain mutants are sensitive to the DNA synthesis inhibitor, hydroxyurea (HU), but not to other genotoxins, such as UV, MMS or CPT.
