Diversity and evolution of ABC proteins in mycorrhiza-forming fungi
Background: Transporter proteins are predicted to have an important role in the mycorrhizal symbiosis, due to the fact that this type of an interaction between plants and fungi requires a continuous nutrient and signalling exchange. ABC transporters are one of the large groups of transporter proteins found both in plants and in fungi. The crucial role of plant ABC transporters in the formation of the mycorrhizal symbiosis has been demonstrated recently. Some of the fungal ABC transporter-encoding genes are also induced during the mycorrhiza formation. However, no experimental evidences of the direct involvement of fungal ABC transporters in this process are available so far. To facilitate the identification of fungal ABC proteins with a potential role in the establishment of the mycorrhizal symbiosis, we have performed an inventory of the ABC protein-encoding genes in the genomes of 25 species of mycorrhiza-forming fungi. Results: We have identified, manually annotated and curated more than 1300 gene models of putative ABC protein-encoding genes. Out of those, more than 1000 models are predicted to encode functional proteins, whereas about 300 models represent gene fragments or putative pseudogenes. We have also performed the phylogenetic analysis of the identified sequences. The sets of ABC proteins in the mycorrhiza-forming species were compared to the related saprotrophic or plant-pathogenic fungal species. Our results demonstrate the high diversity of ABC genes in the genomes of mycorrhiza-forming fungi. Via comparison of transcriptomics data from different species, we have identified candidate groups of ABC transporters that might have a role in the process of the mycorrhiza formation. Conclusions: Results of our inventory will facilitate the identification of fungal transporters with a role in the mycorrhiza formation. We also provide the first data on ABC protein-coding genes for the phylum Glomeromycota and for orders Pezizales, Atheliales, Cantharellales and Sebacinales, contributing to the better knowledge of the diversity of this protein family within the fungal kingdom.Peer reviewe
Torsion Degrees of Freedom in the Regge Calculus as Dislocations on the Simplicial Lattice
Using the notion of a general conical defect, the Regge Calculus is
generalized by allowing for dislocations on the simplicial lattice in addition
to the usual disclinations. Since disclinations and dislocations correspond to
curvature and torsion singularities, respectively, the method we propose
provides a natural way of discretizing gravitational theories with torsion
degrees of freedom like the Einstein-Cartan theory. A discrete version of the
Einstein-Cartan action is given and field equations are derived, demanding
stationarity of the action with respect to the discrete variables of the
theory

The Statistics of Natural Shapes in Modern Coral Reef Landscapes
Spatial heterogeneity is a fundamental characteristic of modern and ancient depositional settings, and the scaling of many carbonate environments has been shown to follow power function distributions. The difficulty in obtaining information on the horizontal persistence of sedimentary lithotopes at the basin scale has, however, hampered evaluation of this fact over larger geographic areas. In recent years, largeâscale maps of reef facies derived from remotely sensed data have become widely available, allowing for an analysis of reefâscale map products from 26 sites spread through four reef provinces, covering \u3e7000 km2 of shallowâwater habitat in the U.S. territorial Pacific. For each site, facies maps were decomposed to polygons describing the perimeter of patches of differing sedimentologic/benthic character. A suite of geospatial metrics quantifying unit shape, fractal dimension, and frequencyâarea relations was applied to investigate the intraâ and intersite variability. The spatial architecture of these reef sites displays robust fractal properties over an extended range of scales with remarkable consistency between provinces. These results indicate the possibility of extrapolating information from large to small scales in various depositional environments
Self consistent determination of plasmonic resonances in ternary nanocomposites
We have developed a self consistent technique to predict the behavior of
plasmon resonances in multi-component systems as a function of wavelength. This
approach, based on the tight lower bounds of the Bergman-Milton formulation, is
able to predict experimental optical data, including the positions, shifts and
shapes of plasmonic peaks in ternary nanocomposites without using any ftting
parameters. Our approach is based on viewing the mixing of 3 components as the
mixing of 2 binary mixtures, each in the same host. We obtained excellent
predictions of the experimental optical behavior for mixtures of Ag:Cu:SiO2 and
alloys of Au-Cu:SiO2 and Ag-Au:H2 O, suggesting that the essential physics of
plasmonic behavior is captured by this approach.Comment: 7 pages and 4 figure
A randomized trial of 13-Cis retinoic acid in children with advanced neuroblastoma after high-dose therapy
One hundred and seventy-five children with Stage 3 or 4 neuroblastoma who had obtained a good response to conventional therapy were randomly allocated to 13-Cis retinoic acid at a dose of 0.75âmg/kg/day or placebo for up to 4 years. Toxicity was mild but no advantage in event-free survival was shown for the children receiving retinoic acid. © 2000 Cancer Research Campaig
Lipid phosphate phosphatase-3 regulates tumor growth via ÎČ-catenin and Cyclin-D1 signaling
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The acquisition of proliferative and invasive phenotypes is considered a hallmark of neoplastic transformation; however, the underlying mechanisms are less well known. Lipid phosphate phosphatase-3 (LPP3) not only catalyzes the dephosphorylation of the bioactive lipid sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) to generate sphingosine but also may regulate embryonic development and angiogenesis <it>via </it>the Wnt pathway. The goal of this study was to determine the role of LPP3 in tumor cells.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We observed increased expression of LPP3 in glioblastoma primary tumors and in U87 and U118 glioblastoma cell lines. We demonstrate that <it>LPP3</it>-knockdown inhibited both U87 and U118 glioblastoma cell proliferation in culture and tumor growth in xenograft assays. Biochemical experiments provided evidence that <it>LPP3</it>-knockdown reduced ÎČ-catenin, CYCLIN-D1, and CD133 expression, with a concomitant increase in phosphorylated ÎČ-catenin. In a converse experiment, the forced expression of LPP3 in human colon tumor (SW480) cells potentiated tumor growth <it>via </it>increased ÎČ-catenin stability and CYCLIN-D1 synthesis. In contrast, elevated expression of LPP3 had no tumorigenic effects on primary cells.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>These results demonstrate for the first time an unexpected role of LPP3 in regulating glioblastoma progression by amplifying ÎČ-catenin and CYCLIN-D1 activities.</p
At the edge of intonation: the interplay of utterance-final F0 movements and voiceless fricative sounds
The paper is concerned with the 'edge of intonation' in a twofold sense. It focuses on utterance-final F0 movements and crosses the traditional segment-prosody divide by investigating the interplay of F0 and voiceless fricatives in speech production. An experiment was performed for German with four types of voiceless fricatives: /f/, /s/, /Ê/ and /x/. They were elicited with scripted dialogues in the contexts of terminal falling statement and high rising question intonations. Acoustic analyses show that fricatives concluding the high rising question intonations had higher mean centres of gravity (CoGs), larger CoG ranges and higher noise energy levels than fricatives concluding the terminal falling statement intonations. The different spectral-energy patterns are suitable to induce percepts of a high 'aperiodic pitch' at the end of the questions and of a low 'aperiodic pitch' at the end of the statements. The results are discussed with regard to the possible existence of 'segmental intonation' and its implication for F0 truncation and the segment-prosody dichotomy, in which segments are the alleged troublemakers for the production and perception of intonation
