Greener synthesis of dimethyl carbonate using a novel tin-zirconia/graphene nanocomposite catalyst
© 2017 A green, rapid and continuous hydrothermal flow synthesis (CHFS) route has been employed to synthesise highly efficient and active novel heterogeneous catalysts. Tin doped zirconia (Zr–Sn–O) and tin doped zirconia/graphene nanocomposite (Zr–Sn/GO) have been assessed as suitable heterogeneous catalysts for the synthesis of dimethyl carbonate (DMC). The catalysts have been extensively characterized using powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area measurement and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis. Extensive batch studies for the synthesis of DMC via the transesterification of propylene carbonate (PC) and methanol (MeOH) using Zr–Sn/GO catalyst in a solvent free process were also conducted. The effect of various reaction conditions such as reactant molar ratio, catalyst loading, reaction temperature and reaction time has been extensively evaluated. Response surface methodology based on Box-Behneken Design (BBD) was employed to derive optimum conditions for maximising PC conversion and DMC yield. The correlations and interactions between various variables such as MeOH:PC ratio, catalyst loading, reaction temperature, reaction time and stirring speed were extensively studied. A quadratic model by multiple regression analysis for the PC conversion and DMC yield was developed and verified by several methods BBD revealed that optimum conditions for high yield values of DMC are 12.33:1 MeOH:PC molar ratio, 446.7 K, 4.08 h and 300 rpm using 2.9% (w/w) Zr–Sn/GO nanocomposite. The maximum predicted responses at the optimum conditions are 85.1% and 81% for PC conversion and yield of DMC respectively. Experimental results at optimum model predicted reaction conditions agree very well with the model predicted response, where 82.4% PC conversion and 78.2% yield of DMC were obtained. Catalyst reusability and stability studies have been conducted at optimum reaction condition to investigate the long term stability of Zr–Sn/GO and it has been found that the catalyst could be reused more than six times (about 42 h) without losing its catalytic activity. These experimental and model predicted values showed an excellent agreement for tin doped zirconia/graphene nanocomposite as a heterogeneous catalyst for the synthesis of DMC from PC and MeOH
Prenatal exposure to methadone or buprenorphine: Early childhood developmental outcomes.
BACKGROUND: Methadone and buprenorphine are recommended to treat opioid use disorders during pregnancy. However, the literature on the relationship between longer-term effects of prenatal exposure to these medications and childhood development is both spare and inconsistent.
METHODS: Participants were 96 children and their mothers who participated in MOTHER, a randomized controlled trial of opioid-agonist pharmacotherapy during pregnancy. The present study examined child growth parameters, cognition, language abilities, sensory processing, and temperament from 0 to 36 months of the child\u27s life. Maternal perceptions of parenting stress, home environment, and addiction severity were also examined.
RESULTS: Tests of mean differences between children prenatally exposed to methadone vs. buprenorphine over the three-year period yielded 2/37 significant findings for children. Similarly, tests of mean differences between children treated for NAS relative to those not treated for NAS yielded 1/37 significant finding. Changes over time occurred for 27/37 child outcomes including expected child increases in weight, head and height, and overall gains in cognitive development, language abilities, sensory processing, and temperament. For mothers, significant changes over time in parenting stress (9/17 scales) suggested increasing difficulties with their children, notably seen in increasing parenting stress, but also an increasingly enriched home environment (4/7 scales).
CONCLUSIONS: Findings strongly suggest no deleterious effects of buprenorphine relative to methadone or of treatment for NAS severity relative to not-treated for NAS on growth, cognitive development, language abilities, sensory processing, and temperament. Moreover, findings suggest that prenatal opioid agonist exposure is not deleterious to normal physical and mental development
Opportunities for Nuclear Astrophysics at FRANZ
The "Frankfurter Neutronenquelle am Stern-Gerlach-Zentrum" (FRANZ), which is
currently under development, will be the strongest neutron source in the
astrophysically interesting energy region in the world. It will be about three
orders of magnitude more intense than the well-established neutron source at
the Research Center Karlsruhe (FZK)
Precise Measurement of Magnetic Field Gradients from Free Spin Precession Signals of He and Xe Magnetometers
We report on precise measurements of magnetic field gradients extracted from
transverse relaxation rates of precessing spin samples. The experimental
approach is based on the free precession of gaseous, nuclear spin polarized
He and Xe atoms in a spherical cell inside a magnetic guiding field
of about 400 nT using LT SQUIDs as low-noise magnetic flux detectors. The
transverse relaxation rates of both spin species are simultaneously monitored
as magnetic field gradients are varied. For transverse relaxation times
reaching 100 h, the residual longitudinal field gradient across the spin sample
could be deduced to be pT/cm. The method takes
advantage of the high signal-to-noise ratio with which the decaying spin
precession signal can be monitored that finally leads to the exceptional
accuracy to determine magnetic field gradients at the sub pT/cm scale
Nitrogen fixation and release of fixed nitrogen by Trichodesmium spp. in the Gulf of Mexico
During a 3‐yr study in the Gulf of Mexico, we measured dinitrogen (N2) fixation and nitrogen (N) release by Trichodesmium and compared these rates with water column N demand and the estimated N necessary to support blooms of Karenia brevis, a toxic dinoflagellate that severely affects the West Florida shelf. Net and gross N2 fixation rates were compared in simultaneous incubations using δ15N2 uptake and acetylene reduction, respectively. The difference between net and gross N2 fixation is assumed to be an approximation of the rate of N release. Results demonstrate that Trichodesmium in the Gulf of Mexico are fixing N2 at high rates and that an average of 52% of this recently fixed N2 is rapidly released. Calculations suggest that observed densities of Trichodesmium can provide enough N to support moderately sized K. brevis blooms. Based on other studies where δ15N2 and acetylene reduction were compared directly, it appears that N release from Trichodesmium is common but varies in magnitude among environments. In addition, carbon (C) and N‐based doubling times for Trichodesmium vary among studies and environments. Comparing gross N2 fixation and C fixation directly, C‐based doubling times exceeded N‐based doubling times, which suggests an imbalance in elemental turnover or a failure to fully quantify Trichodesmium N use
Measuring the proton spectrum in neutron decay - latest results with aSPECT
The retardation spectrometer aSPECT was built to measure the shape of the
proton spectrum in free neutron decay with high precision. This allows us to
determine the antineutrino electron angular correlation coefficient a. We aim
for a precision more than one order of magnitude better than the present best
value, which is Delta_a /a = 5%.
In a recent beam time performed at the Institut Laue-Langevin during April /
May 2008 we reached a statistical accuracy of about 2% per 24 hours measurement
time. Several systematic effects were investigated experimentally. We expect
the total relative uncertainty to be well below 5%.Comment: Accepted for publication in the Conference Proceedings of the

Efficiency determination of resistive plate chambers for fast quasi-monoenergetic neutrons
Composite detectors made of stainless steel converters and multigap resistive
plate chambers have been irradiated with quasi-monoenergetic neutrons with a
peak energy of 175MeV. The neutron detection efficiency has been determined
using two different methods. The data are in agreement with the output of Monte
Carlo simulations. The simulations are then extended to study the response of a
hypothetical array made of these detectors to energetic neutrons from a
radioactive ion beam experiment.Comment: Submitted to Eur.Phys.J. A; upgraded version correcting some typos

Comparison of ultracold neutron sources for fundamental physics measurements
Ultracold neutrons (UCNs) are key for precision studies of fundamental
parameters of the neutron and in searches for new CP violating processes or
exotic interactions beyond the Standard Model of particle physics. The most
prominent example is the search for a permanent electric dipole moment of the
neutron (nEDM). We have performed an experimental comparison of the leading UCN
sources currently operating. We have used a 'standard' UCN storage bottle with
a volume of 32 liters, comparable in size to nEDM experiments, which allows us
to compare the UCN density available at a given beam port.Comment: 20 pages, 30 Figure
