    Gauge/string duality and scalar glueball mass ratios

    It has been shown by Polchinski and Strassler that the scaling of high energy QCD scattering amplitudes can be obtained from string theory. They considered an AdS slice as an approximation for the dual space of a confining gauge theory. Here we use this approximation to estimate in a very simple way the ratios of scalar glueball masses imposing Dirichlet boundary conditions on the string dilaton field. These ratios are in good agreement with the results in the literature. We also find that they do not depend on the size of the slice.Comment: 5 pages, no figures. References updated.     A crude model to study radio frequency induced density modification close to launchers

    The interplay between radio frequency (RF) waves and the density is discussed by adopting the general framework of a 2-time-scale multi-fluid treatment, allowing to separate the dynamics on the RF time scale from that on the time scale on which macroscopic density and flows vary as a result of the presence of electromagnetic and/or electrostatic fields. The focus is on regions close to launchers where charge neutrality is incomplete and waves are commonly evanescent. The fast time scale dynamics influences the slow time scale behavior via quasilinear terms (the Ponderomotive force for the case of the equation of motion). Electrons and ions are treated on the same footing. Also, both fast and slow waves are retained in the wave description. Although this work is meant as a subtopic of a large study-the wave induced "convective cell" physics at hand is of a 2- or 3-dimensional nature while this paper limits itself to a single dimension-a few tentative examples are presented

    Anti-de Sitter boundary in Poincare coordinates

    We study the space-time boundary of a Poincare patch of Anti-de Sitter (AdS) space. We map the Poincare AdS boundary to the global coordinate chart and show why this boundary is not equivalent to the global AdS boundary. The Poincare AdS boundary is shown to contain points of the bulk of the entire AdS space. The Euclidean AdS space is also discussed. In this case one can define a semi-global chart that divides the AdS space in the same way as the corresponding Euclidean Poincare chart.Comment: In this revised version we add a discussion of the physical consequences of the choice of a coordinate system for AdS space.     Scattering and Bound State Green's Functions on a Plane via so(2,1) Lie Algebra

    We calculate the Green's functions for the particle-vortex system, for two anyons on a plane with and without a harmonic regulator and in a uniform magnetic field. These Green's functions which describe scattering or bound states (depending on the specific potential in each case) are obtained exactly using an algebraic method related to the SO(2,1) Lie group. From these Green's functions we obtain the corresponding wave functions and for the bound states we also find the energy spectra.Comment: 21 Latex pages. Typos corrected. Results unchanged.     Pion and Vector Meson Form Factors in the Kuperstein-Sonnenschein holographic model

    We study phenomenological aspects of the holographic model of chiral symmetry breaking recently introduced by Kuperstein and Sonnenschein (KS). As a first step, we calculate the spectrum of vector and axial-vector mesons in the KS model. We numerically compute various coupling constants of the mesons and pions. Our analysis indicates that vector meson dominance is realized in this model. The pion, vector meson and axial-vector meson form factors are obtained and studied in detail. We find good agreement with QCD results.     This paper analyses the effect of cooling on mechanical behaviour, in particular, on the residual stresses that appear when materials of the porcelain tile type are involved. However, these compositions have a very complex microstructure, in which there are several crystalline phases and the glassy phase is not homogeneous. In this study a simpler composition was therefore formulated, using sodium feldspar as starting material to which quartz with different particle sizes was added. A viscoelastic model was used to estimate the residual stresses that develop during cooling. The parameters of the model were obtained either from the literature or were determined in laboratory tests. An assembly was designed that allowed non-contact measurement of the temperature at the top and bottom surfaces of the test pieces during cooling.     Business cycles, international trade and capital flows: Evidence from Latin America

    This paper adopts a flexible framework to assess both short- and long-run business cycle linkages between six Latin American (LA) countries and the four largest economies in the world (namely the US, the Euro area, Japan and China) over the period 1980:I-2011:IV. The result indicate that within the LA region there are considerable differences between countries, success stories coexisting with extremely vulnerable economies. They also show that the LA region as a whole is largely dependent on external developments, especially in the years after the great recession of 2008 and 2009. The trade channel appears to be the most important source of business cycle comovement, whilst capital flows are found to have a limited role, especially in the very short run

    Brasil x Espanha: consumo de energia térmica e emissões de CO2 envolvidos na fabricação de revestimentos cerâmicos

    A demanda de energia térmica da indústria de revestimentos cerâmicos é bastante elevada, sendo atendida quase por completo pela combustão do gás natural. Os gastos com geração de energia térmica representam uma grande parte do custo de produção de revestimentos cerâmicos, e as emissões de CO2 resultantes desta atividade industrial são muito expressivas. Neste sentido, o aumento da eficiência térmica nos processos produtivos conhecidos atualmente deve ser buscado constantemente com o objetivo de reduzir o custo de fabricação e as emissões de CO2. Para isso, é necessário dispor de uma base de dados de consumos energéticos e emissões de CO2, a fim de conhecer a situação atual do setor e as possibilidades de aumentar a eficiência energética do processo. Dessa forma, o presente trabalho foi realizado com o objetivo de levantar dados baseados em medições diretas em equipamentos industriais consumidores de gás natural, no Brasil e na Espanha, utilizando a mesma metodologia. Foram visitadas 65 empresas e analisados 130 equipamentos, sendo possível estabelecer comparações entre o consumo de diversas tipologias de produtos, etapas do processo produtivo, distintas rotas de processamento, equipamentos com características construtivas diferenciadas, dentre outros. As informações obtidas constituem um inédito banco de dados que representa a real situação dos setores de revestimentos cerâmicos do Brasil e da Espanha, com respeito ao consumo energético e às emissões de CO2

    We report the experimental realization of a recently discovered quantum information protocol by Asher Peres implying an apparent non-local quantum mechanical retrodiction effect. The demonstration is carried out by applying a novel quantum optical method by which each singlet entangled state is physically implemented by a two-dimensional subspace of Fock states of a mode of the electromagnetic field, specifically the space spanned by the vacuum and the one photon state, along lines suggested recently by E. Knill et al., Nature 409, 46 (2001) and by M. Duan et al., Nature 414, 413 (2001). The successful implementation of the new technique is expected to play an important role in modern quantum information and communication and in EPR quantum non-locality studies

    Glueball Scattering Amplitudes from Holography

    Using techniques developed in a previous paper three-point functions in field theories described by holographic renormalization group flows are computed. We consider a system of one active scalar and one inert scalar coupled to gravity. For the GPPZ flow, their dual operators create states that are interpreted as glueballs of the N=1 SYM theory, which lies at the infrared end of the renormalization group flow. The scattering amplitudes for three-glueball processes are calculated providing precise predictions for glueball decays in N=1 SYM theory.
