LUMBAR SPINE IN SENIOR AND ELITE LEVEL ROWERS – A COMPARISON WITH THE LOW BACK PAIN POPULATION
Low back pain (LBP) is very prevalent in the sport of rowing. Elite rowers miss on average 24 days from training in rowing related injuries per year (Bernstein et al 2002). A wireless posture monitor (Sels Instruments, Belgium) has recently been developed, which can measure lumbar spine posture in real time. The monitor has good face validity and laboratory bench testing has established the accuracy of the monitor. The aims of this investigation were to; (1) determine the reliability of this novel method of monitoring lumbar spine posture during rowing, and (2) determine if there are differences in lumbar spine posture between rowers with/without LBP during an incremental “step-test”. These original pilot studies will inform further development of the monitor prior to final validation studies, and use of the monitor in larger studies
The mystery of the 'Kite' radio source in Abell 2626: insights from new Chandra observations
We present the results of a new Chandra study of the galaxy cluster A2626.
The radio emission of the cluster shows a complex system of four symmetric arcs
without known correlations with the X-ray emission. The mirror symmetry of the
radio arcs toward the center and the presence of two optical cores in the
central galaxy suggested that they may be created by pairs of precessing radio
jets powered by dual AGNs inside the cD galaxy. However, previous observations
failed to observe the second jetted AGN and the spectral trend due to radiative
age along the radio arcs, thus challenging this interpretation. The new Chandra
observation had several scientific objectives, including the search for the
second AGN that would support the jet precession model. We focus here on the
detailed study of the local properties of the thermal and non-thermal emission
in the proximity of the radio arcs, in order to get more insights into their
origin. We performed a standard data reduction of the Chandra dataset deriving
the radial profiles of temperature, density, pressure and cooling time of the
intra-cluster medium. We further analyzed the 2D distribution of the gas
temperature, discovering that the south-western junction of the radio arcs
surrounds the cool core of the cluster. We studied the X-ray SB and spectral
profiles across the junction, finding a cold front spatially coincident with
the radio arcs. This may suggest a connection between the sloshing of the
thermal gas and the nature of the radio filaments, raising new scenarios for
their origin. A possibility is that the radio arcs trace the projection of a
complex surface connecting the sites where electrons are most efficiently
reaccelerated by the turbulence that is generated by the gas sloshing. In this
case, diffuse emission embedded by the arcs and with extremely steep spectrum

AN INVESTIGATION OF THE ACTIVATION OF THE SUBDIVISIONS OF GLUTEUS MEDIUS DURING ISOMETRIC HIP CONTRACTIONS
Gluteus medius is involved in movement and stability of the hip and gluteus medius dysfunction is commonly implicated in many lower limb pathologies (Fredericson et al 2000). It is proposed that functional subdivisions exist within the gluteus medius muscle (Conneely and O’Sullivan 2008). There is however a lack of empirical evidence examining the role of the subdivisions of gluteus medius. This study compared the muscle activation of these subdivisions (anterior, middle and posterior) during isometric contractions of hip abduction, internal and external rotation in normal subjects
Challenges of simulating undrained tests using the constant volume method in DEM
Liquefaction during earthquakes can cause significant infrastructural damage and loss of life, motivating a fundamental study of undrained sand response using discrete element modeling (DEM). Two methods are widely used in DEM for simulating the undrained response of soil. One approach is to numerically couple the DEM code with a fluid model. Alternatively, if the soil is fully saturated and water is assumed to be incompressible, the volume of the sample can be held constant to simulate an undrained test. The latter has the advantage of being computationally straightforward, but the assumption of a constant volume can cause some issues which are discussed in this paper. Depending on the contact model selected, extremely high deviatoric stresses and pore water pressures can be generated for dense samples using the constant volume approach which are not observed in corresponding laboratory tests. Furthermore the results of these constant volume simulations tend to be sensitive to the strain rate selected. The evolution of particle size distribution caused by grain crushing is also ignored in most undrained simulations. For these reasons, authors often restrict the extent of the data presented to physically-realistic ranges and report results in non-dimensional terms, e.g., using stress ratios (q/p’) or stresses normalized by the initial confining pressure. This paper aims to highlight some of these issues, explore whether the constant volume approach is appropriate and make recommendations for future analysis of undrained soil behavior using DEM. © 2013 AIP Publishing LLCpublished_or_final_versio
Particle Impact Analysis of Bulk Powder During Pneumatic Conveyance
Fragmentation of powders during transportation is a common problem for manufacturers of food and pharmaceutical products. We illustrate that the primary cause of breakage is due to inter-particle collisions, rather than particle-wall impacts, and provide a statistical mechanics model giving the number of collisions resulting in fragmentation
A 6-12 GHz Analogue Lag-Correlator for Radio Interferometry
Aims: We describe a 6-12 GHz analogue correlator that has been developed for
use in radio interferometers. Methods: We use a lag-correlator technique to
synthesis eight complex spectral channels. Two schemes were considered for
sampling the cross-correlation function, using either real or complex
correlations, and we developed prototypes for both of them. We opted for the
``add and square'' detection scheme using Schottky diodes over the more
commonly used active multipliers because the stability of the device is less
critical. Results: We encountered an unexpected problem, in that there were
errors in the lag spacings of up to ten percent of the unit spacing. To
overcome this, we developed a calibration method using astronomical sources
which corrects the effects of the non-uniform sampling as well as gain error

Canine dystocia in 50 UK first-opinion emergency-care veterinary practices: prevalence and risk factors
Dystocia can represent a major welfare issue for dogs of certain breeds and morphologies. First-opinion emergency-care veterinary caseloads represent a useful data resource for epidemiological research because dystocia can often result in emergency veterinary care. The study analysed a merged database of clinical records from 50 first-opinion emergency-care veterinary practices participating in the VetCompass Programme. Multivariable logistic regression modelling was used for risk factors analysis. There were 701 dystocia cases recorded among 18,758 entire female dogs, resulting in a dystocia prevalence of 3.7 per cent (95 per cent CI 3.5–4.0 per cent). Breeds with the highest odds of dystocia compared with crossbred bitches were French Bulldog (OR: 15.9, 95 per cent CI 9.3 to 27.2, P<0.001), Boston Terrier (OR: 12.9, 95 per cent CI 5.6 to 29.3, P<0.001), Chihuahua (OR: 10.4, 95 per cent CI 7.0 to 15.7, P<0.001) and Pug (OR: 11.3, 95 per cent CI 7.1 to 17.9, P<0.001). Bitches aged between 3.0 and 5.9 years had 3.1 (95 per cent CI 2.6 to 3.7, P<0.001) times the odds of dystocia compared with bitches aged under 3.0years. Certain breeds, including some brachycephalic and toy breeds, appeared at high risk of dystocia. Opportunities to improve this situation are discussed
Effects of inter-particle friction on the critical state behaviour of granular materials: a numerical study

This paper investigates the effect of inter-particle friction on the critical state behavior of DEM assemblies with grading representative of a real soil. It is found that the angle of shearing resistance at the critical state increases with increasing inter-particle friction () and in void ratio (e) vs logarithmic mean effective stress (log(p’)) space the critical state locii have higher e values when is higher. An atypical CSL in e-logp’ space that deviates from experimental observations and the classical CSSM behavior was observed when µ = 0.5. Micro-scale analyses show that this can be attributed to the emergence of a higher number of floating particles due to the increasing self-stability of strong force chains with increasing inter-particle friction. This study recommends the use of inter-particle friction lower than 0.5 in DEM simulations of element testing in soil mechanics.published_or_final_versio
