    A quantum delayed choice experiment

    Quantum systems exhibit particle-like or wave-like behaviour depending on the experimental apparatus they are confronted by. This wave-particle duality is at the heart of quantum mechanics, and is fully captured in Wheeler's famous delayed choice gedanken experiment. In this variant of the double slit experiment, the observer chooses to test either the particle or wave nature of a photon after it has passed through the slits. Here we report on a quantum delayed choice experiment, based on a quantum controlled beam-splitter, in which both particle and wave behaviours can be investigated simultaneously. The genuinely quantum nature of the photon's behaviour is tested via a Bell inequality, which here replaces the delayed choice of the observer. We observe strong Bell inequality violations, thus showing that no model in which the photon knows in advance what type of experiment it will be confronted by, hence behaving either as a particle or as wave, can account for the experimental data

    International Economic Linkages and the International Debt Situation

    "Coping with the debt crisis" was a major recurrent theme in international economic affairs during the 1980s. Managing the legacy of the crisis remains a major challenge of the 1990s, both for OECD creditor countries and for the debtor countries themselves. During the 1980s, following the Mexican payments crisis of August 1982, a number of debt "plans" and "strategies" have been introduced, but overall progress has been slow; one major achievement, however, has been to avoid a major banking crisis. This article results from a project to investigate the relationship between macroeconomic developments in OECD countries and those in debtor countries'. From the light that this throws on the interaction of international linkages, including those between OECD macroeconomic policies and debtor countries, we can better understand why many of the hopes and expectations of these plans were not realised. To analyse the relationship, between the macroeconomic environment, debt, and economic performance, the approach taken here was to build small macroeconometric models for Latin America (DEMOD) that are simulated in combination with the OECD world model, INTERLINK2. These models, whose broad structure is outlined in the Appendix and described more fully in Dittus and O'Brien (1990), take many variables from INTERLINK, analyse their impact on Latin America, and then provide feedback to the main system. This builds on the strengths of INTERLINK - its global character, providing explicit modelling of international linkages of trade volumes, prices, interest and exchange rates, as well as assuring world consistency - wi$h the additional benefit of more detailed information on Latin American debtor countries. The following section provides a brief overview of the history of the debt crisis during the 1980s. It is followed by three sections which look at different aspects of the relation between debt and macroeconomic developments. First, we look at the influence of the world economy and of domestic policies on the evolution of the debt crisis from 1982 to 1986; then we look at some conditions under which new money packages may be beneficial, and discuss how debtreduction schemes fit into this picture; following this, we consider the impact that macroeconomic imbalances - another recurring theme of the 1980s - may have on Latin America performance and the debt situation. The final section draws some conclusions

    The recent identification of two new thrombin receptors, PAR3 and PAR4, led us to re-examine the basis for endothelial cell responses to thrombin. Human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) are known to express PAR1 and the trypsin/tryptase receptor, PAR2. Northern blots detected both of those receptors and, to a lesser extent, PAR3, but PAR4 message was undetectable and there was no response to PAR4 agonist peptides. To determine whether PAR3 or any other receptor contributes to thrombin signaling in HUVEC, PAR1 cleavage was blocked with two selective antibodies and PAR1 activation was inhibited with the antagonist, BMS200261. The antibodies completely inhibited HUVEC responses to thrombin, but BMS200261 was only partly effective, even though separate studies established that the antagonist completely inhibits PAR1 signaling at the concentrations used. Since peptides mimicking the PAR1 tethered ligand domain can also activate PAR2, we asked whether the remaining thrombin response in the presence of the antagonist could be due in part to the intermolecular transactivation of PAR2 by cleaved PAR1. Evidence that transactivation can occur was obtained in COS-7 cells co-expressing PAR2 and a variant of PAR1 that can be cleaved, but not signal. There was a substantial response to thrombin only in cells expressing both receptors. Conversely, in HUVEC, complete blockade of the thrombin response by the PAR1 antagonist occurred only when signaling through PAR2 was also blocked. From these observations we conclude that 1) PAR1 is the predominant thrombin receptor expressed in HUVEC and cleavage of PAR1 is required for endothelial cell responses to thrombin; 2) although PAR3 may be expressed, there is still no evidence that it mediates thrombin responses; 3) PAR4 is not expressed on HUVEC; and 4) transactivation of PAR2 by cleaved PAR1 can contribute to endothelial cell responses to thrombin, particularly when signaling through PAR1 is blocked. Such transactivation may limit the effectiveness of PAR1 antagonists, which compete with the tethered ligand domain rather than preventing PAR1 cleavage

    Vaccination against infectious diseases has changed the future of the human species, saving millions of lives every year, both children and adults, and providing major benefits to society as a whole. Here we show, however, that national and sub-national coverage of vaccination varies greatly and major unmet needs persist. Although scientific progress opens exciting perspectives in terms of new vaccines, the pathway from discovery to sustainable implementation can be long and difficult, from the financing, development and licensing to programme implementation and public acceptance. Immunization is one of the best investments in health and should remain a priority for research, industry, public health and society

    When do Anisotropic Magnetic Susceptibilities Lead to Large NMR Shifts? Exploring Particle Shape Effects in the Battery Electrode Material LiFePO4.

    Materials used as electrodes in energy storage devices have been extensively studied with solid-state NMR spectroscopy. Due to the almost ubiquitous presence of transition metals, these systems are also often magnetic. While it is well known that the presence of anisotropic bulk magnetic susceptibility (ABMS) leads to broadening of resonances under MAS, we show that for mono-disperse and non-spherical particle morphologies, the ABMS can also lead to considerable shifts, which vary substantially as a function of particle shape. This, on one hand, complicates the interpretation of the NMR spectrum and the ability to compare the measured shift of different samples of the same system. On the other hand the ABMS shift provides a mechanism with which to derive the particle shape from the NMR spectrum. In this work, we present a methodology to model the ABMS shift, and relate it to the shape of the studied particles. The approach is tested on the 7^7Li NMR spectra of single crystals and powders of LiFePO4_4. The results show that the ABMS shift can be a major contribution to the total NMR shift in systems with large magnetic anisotropies and small hyperfine shifts, 7^7Li shifts for typical LiFePO4_4 morphologies varying by as much as 100 ppm. The results are generalised to demonstrate that the approach can be used as a means with which to probe the aspect ratio of particles. The work has implications for the analysis of NMR spectra of all materials with anisotropic magnetic susceptibilities, including diamagnetic materials such as graphite

    Quantitative comparison between in vivo DNA adduct formation from exposure to selected DNA-reactive carcinogens, natural background levels of DNA adduct formation and tumour incidence in rodent bioassays

    This study aimed at quantitatively comparing the occurrence/formation of DNA adducts with the carcinogenicity induced by a selection of DNA-reactive genotoxic carcinogens. Contrary to previous efforts, we used a very uniform set of data, limited to in vivo rat liver studies in order to investigate whether a correlation can be obtained, using a benchmark dose (BMD) approach. Dose-response data on both carcinogenicity and in vivo DNA adduct formation were available for six compounds, i.e. 2-acetylaminofluorene, aflatoxin B1, methyleugenol, safrole, 2-amino-3,8-dimethylimidazo[4,5-f]quinoxaline and tamoxifen. BMD10 values for liver carcinogenicity were calculated using the US Environmental Protection Agency BMD software. DNA adduct levels at this dose were extrapolated assuming linearity of the DNA adduct dose response. In addition, the levels of DNA adducts at the BMD10 were compared to available data on endogenous background DNA damage in the target organ. Although for an individual carcinogen the tumour response increases when adduct levels increase, our results demonstrate that when comparing different carcinogens, no quantitative correlation exists between the level of DNA adduct formation and carcinogenicity. These data confirm that the quantity of DNA adducts formed by a DNA-reactive compound is not a carcinogenicity predictor but that other factors such as type of adduct and mutagenic potential may be equally relevant. Moreover, comparison to background DNA damage supports the notion that the mere occurrence of DNA adducts above or below the level of endogenous DNA damage is neither correlated to development of cancer. These data strongly emphasise the need to apply the mode of action framework to understand the contribution of other biological effect markers playing a role in carcinogenicit

    Mycobacterium ulcerans (M. ulcerans) is a necrotizing skin infection endemic to the Bellarine Peninsula, Australia. Current treatment recommendations include 8 weeks of combination antibiotics, with adjuvant surgery if necessary. However, antibiotic toxicity often results in early treatment cessation and local experience suggests that shorter antibiotic courses may be effective with concurrent surgery. We report the outcomes of patients in the Barwon Health M. ulcerans cohort who received shorter courses of antibiotic therapy than 8 weeks

    Nanoparticles of Cu2ZnSnS4 as performance enhancing additives for organic field-effect transistors

    The addition of oleylamine coated Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS) nanoparticles to solutions of an organic semiconductor used to fabricate organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) has been investigated. The oligothiophene-based small molecule 5T-TTF and the polymer poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) were each applied in the transistors with various concentrations of CZTS (5-20%). Atomic force microscopy (AFM) was applied to characterise the surface morphology of the OFETs. The use of 5 and 10 wt% of the CZTS nanoparticles in 5T-TTF and P3HT solutions, respectively, appears to be a simple and effective way of improving OFET performance
