    THE SHRINKAGE OF JAVANESE VOCABULARY

    Previous studies show that Javanese shrinks in terms of its form, function and accuracy due to Indonesian and the attitude of the Javanese speakers towards Indonesian and Javanese(Poedjosoedarmo,1991; Gunarwan, 2006). In regard to the causes of the shrinkage of Javanese, there isat least one more thing that leads to the shrinkage. This paper presents the results of an observation to the Javanese vocabulary items used in the daily life of Javanese speakers. The study aims at describingsome Javanese words which are likely to fade away due to a technological advance, and explaining theimpact to the existence of the local virtues. The description is based on the observation toward the things around the Javanese people in an area of Jawa Tengah to fulfill their daily needs and the words toexpress them at present, and then compared them with those noticed in 1970s and recalled by the writer.The results showed that though the vocabulary items of the Javanese language were enriched by thevocabulary items of other languages, at the same time some Javanese words commonly used in the daily life are likely to disappear from the daily use. The disappearance of the Javanese words also means the vanishing of the things associated with the words and the related local virtues

    The use of peer feedback via Instagram in Blended learning to improve students' Recount text writing

    Writing is one of language skills which is considered as a complicated skill to be mastered because it requires variety of abilities such as generating ideas, determining purposes, developing arguments, organizing and managing the text effectively, and revising draft. Due to that matter, this research proposed instagram as one of the effective tools used in blended learning to improve student’s writing. The aims of this study are to investigate whether there is any difference in student’s writing achievement after the students are taught by using Peer feedback via instagram , to find out which aspect of writing that improves the most after being taught by using Peer feedback via instagram and to find out what aspect of writing that students correct the most. This research used the one-group pretest-posttest design that involved 30 students of X IPS 4 class at MAN 1 Bandar Lampung in the 2019/2020 academic year. The writing tests were also used as the instruments to collect the data. The data obtained were analyzed by using paired sample t-test in which the significance level was determined by sign 0.05. With regard to the data analysis, the use of instagram can improve the Student’s writing achievement in all aspects of writing: content, organization, vocabulary, language use and mechanics. It is also found that content was the aspect of writing which improved the most.     Grammatical interference in Islamic school students’ English narrative writings

    Employing a qualitative approach, this study aims to discover the types of grammatical interference that mostly occur in narrative texts written by Indonesian students at a senior high school level. The grammatical interference covered in this article is categorized into two, namely syntactical interference and morphological interference. Moreover, 20 eleventh-grader students of an Islamic school were chosen randomly to be the sample of this research. The students were asked to compose a narrative text with a topic that has been determined by the teacher. Their writings were then analyzed descriptively to find out the dominant types of grammatical interference made by the students. It was revealed that the students encountered morphological inferences related to tenses, articles, subject-plural forms, and pronouns. Besides, syntactical inferences regarding word order, noun phrase, and passive voice are found in the students’ writings. Thus, it implies that students often used the grammatical rules of their first language in composing their writings in English.

    Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meneliti: i) peningkatan kemampuan pemahaman membaca siswa melalui penerapan teknik TPS dan ii) hambatan yang dihadapi siswa selama penerapan teknik TPS. Data diperoleh dari pre-test, post-test dan lembar pengamatan. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa terdapat peningkatan signifikan secara statistik pada pencapaian pemahaman membaca siswa dengan tingkat signifikan (0.000.05). Hasil dari lembar pengamatan menunjukkan bahwa rendahnya penguasaan kosakata dan kesulitan menginterpretasi ide dalam text adalah hambatan utama yang dihadapi siswa selama penerapan TPS. Bagaimanapun, penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa teknik TPS dapat diterapkan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan membaca siswa.The objectives of this study were to investigate: i) the students improvement on reading comprehension achievement after they were taught through TPS technique and ii) the students constraints during the implementation of TPS technique.     FUNGSI PINJAMAN DARI BAHASA INGGRIS DALAM TEKS BERBAHASA INDONESIA PADA RANAH OLAHRAGA

    Borrowing of different linguistic units can be encountered in almost all Indonesian texts of various domains, including sport domains. This study aims at describing the functions of borrowing from English in Indonesian texts of sport domains. The data of linguistic units borrowed from English, both loanwords and metaphorical code-switches, in Indonesian texts of sport domains were taken from the sport articles of an Indonesian national newspaper in 2010—2011, and from three sport books, each concerns with techniques of playing sports, sport education, and sport for health. The linguistic units borrowed were analyzed their pragmatic functions based on their external factors, namely, their speech components. The research results show that the linguistic units borrowed from English hold all kinds of pragmatic functions proposed by Jakobson (1973: 54—57) in the texts of sport written in Indonesian. The results imply that even though the functions expressed in the linguistic units borrowed from English are based on some reasons, not all of the functions need to be expressed in those borrowed linguistic units.

    The Influence of What Am I? Game toward Students’ Speaking Achievement

    Abstrak. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mencari tahu apakah ada atau tidak peningkatan yang statistik dari pencapaian siswa dalam berbicara setelah siswa diajarkan melalui What Am I? Game. Penelitian ini menggunakan one group pretest-posttest. Penelitian ini melibatkan 30 siswa kelas 8D SMP di Lampung Selatan. Tes berbicara dalam bentuk mendeskripsikan gambar digunakan untuk mengumpulkan data. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa adanya peningkatan yang statistik dari pencapaian siswa dalam berbicara dengan signifikan tingkat 0.05. Sehingga dapat disarankan  bahwa permainan memudahkan siswa untuk meningkatkan pencapaian berbicara mereka. Abstract. The speaking test in the form of picture description was used to collect the data. The findings revealed that there was a statistically improvement of the students’ speaking achievement with the significant at level 0.05.
