    TESL pre-service teachers’ perceptions on the use of Jazz chants in primary ESL classroom

    Learning vocabulary is an essential aspect of mastering English language. In Malaysia, English as a second language (ESL) learners often struggle with memorizing vocabulary, which hinders their language acquisition. Since vocabulary grasp is a pre-requisite for language learning, Jazz chants can be an effective tool for ESL learners to learn vocabulary in the target language. This study used a survey approach to investigate the TESL pre-service teachers’ perceptions on the use of Jazz chants in primary ESL classrooms. A total of 203 TESL pre-service teachers from five Institutes of Teacher Education (ITEs) participated in the study, responding to a questionnaire on the use of Jazz chants to enhance vocabulary learning. The findings indicated that the majority of respondents provided positive feedback and had knowledge of Jazz chants, and they utilized it frequently in teaching vocabulary. Additionally, the researcher found out that there is a weak positive correlation between these two attributes

    Analysis of communication strategies used by students in business english classes at the faculty of economics and business, University of Lampung

    Communication plays an important role in today's global environment because everyone will be inseparable from communication activities. Language is a communication tool used as a means to express and convey information, to learn about people and the world around them. This study describes the use of communication strategies in  English classes in the Department of Management, Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Lampung (FEB Unila). This study aims to find out how the use of  communication strategies  by students during discussions in class and  their speaking skills in using these communication strategies.  This study used a case study approach to investigate the use of communication strategies at the perspective  of language proficiency because the most significant predictor of  the use of a particular communication strategy was language proficiency. The subjects of this study were taken purposively as  much as 1 class with a total of 36 students with high and low proficiency levels. They are first-year students of the S1 Management Department at FEB Unila. In this study, researchers used several data sources, namely observation, interviews, and documentation. This is intended to answer research questions based on data triangulation so that the data obtained is more reliable. The results of this study show that there are nine communication strategies used by learners in speaking for discussion; message abandonment, approximation, stalling, literal translation, code switching, convoluted, begging for help, mime, and using versatile words. The study also found that the strategies used in learning influenced learning outcomes in English communication where strategies such as approximation, literal translation, stalling, convoluted, asking for help, and mime greatly helped learners to express their ideas in discussions and were shown to get good and excellent grades in almost all speaking performance criteria.  Keywords: Communication Strategies, English Language Teaching, Business English

    A study on students’ vocabulary size at junior and senior high school students

    This research aims to find out the vocabulary mastery of students in Junior and Senior High School consisted of State and Private School. Those schools were located in Bandar Lampung and Tanggamus. The curriculum has set the amount of the vocabulary size should be mastered by students. However, there is no specific test designed by the curriculum to measure students’ vocabulary size. To answer these questions, survey method has ;been used in order to find out students’ vocabulary size in Junior and Senior High School. The researcher used The Vocabulary Level Test developed by Webb et. al. (2017), The 6000 Level Vocabulary Level Test by Beglar (2010), and questionnaire consisted of students’ demography and perception. The research shows almost all of the schools involved in this study were passed the curriculum, requirement. The result found that the schools who got high score were SMAN 2 Bandar Lampung (5340 words) from Senior High School and SMP Al-Kautsar (4275 words) from Junior High School. The research also found there are some differences of the vocabulary size between the students of State / Private School and Urban / Non-urban school. In conclusion, there are some factors that indicated influence students’ vocabulary size; learning facility, English course participation, students’ experience in learning English, and etc

    Teaching narrative short story by using jigsaw technique to improve students’ vocabulary achievement

    Vocabulary has an essential role in learning a language, especially in learning English as a foreign language that links four skills i.e., listening, speaking, reading, and writing, and all about words or particular sets of words. Therefore, the researcher conducted this research (1) to determine the significant improvement in students’ vocabulary achievement after the students were taught using jigsaw technique and (2) to reveal the difficulties students faced in learning vocabulary using jigsaw technique. This research used quantitative and qualitative methods with 32 students of class X.2 at SMAN 7 Bandar Lampung. This research used a vocabulary test and interview. Pre-test and posttest are used to collect the data. The researcher used a Repeated Measures t-test. The result showed that the pre-test mean was 70.08 and the post-test mean was 83.20, while the t-value is 9.186 at the significant level is 0.000

    An error analysis of students’ descriptive writing at Khadijah Islamic boarding school

    The purposes of this research are to find out the types of grammatical errors in students’ descriptive writing and to find out the most frequent type of errors in students’ descriptive writing. The method of this research is a descriptive qualitative method. The data were collected from 22 descriptive writings which were written by the students. The researcher used the writings as the instrument. In this research, all types of grammatical errors were classified and described based on surface strategy taxonomy by Dulay Burt, and Krashen (1982). Based on the result of the analysis, there were 670 grammatical errors found in the students’ descriptive writing. Misformation error occupies the first rank with 286 errors. Then following closely is omission error with 260 errors, next is addition error with 90 errors, and the last one is misorder error with 34 errors.Keywords: Error Analysis, Surface Strategy Taxonomy, Writing, Second Language.

    The use of English short story to enrich students’ vocabulary achievement at third grade students in SMPN 7 Metro

    This research was about short story to enrich students’ vocabulary achievement in third grade of SMPN 7 Metro. The statement of problem are: 1. Is short story effective to enrich students’ vocabulary achievement? 2. Which aspect of vocabulary improves the most after the implementation of short story? The objective of the research are to see whether the use of short story is effective to enrich students’ vocabulary achievement and to see which aspect of vocabulary improves the most after the implementation of short story. The sample of this research was class of III D in SMPN 7 Metro. The instrument of this research is test (pre and post test). The result of the study demonstrated a significant improvement in vocabulary achievement following the use of short story in the classroom. The mean result of pre-test is 53.28 while the mean result of post-test is 63.28. For the aspect of vocabulary that most improve after the implementation of short story is meaning with experienced the highest increase with an increase in score of 3.75. Based on the result of study, it can be concluded that short story is effective to enrich students’ vocabulary achievement

    The correlation between students’ perception of driving suggestopedia principles and students’ vocabulary mastery

    The objective of this research was to investigate whether there is any significant correlation between the students’ perception of suggestopedia principles and students’ vocabulary mastery. The population of this research was the first- and second-year students of SMP N 7 Metro in the academic year of 2021/2022. There are 60 students who were selected as research samples by using purposive sampling technique. The research instrument was a questionnaire and vocabulary mastery test. This research applied the correlation study of ex facto design in which the results were analyzed by using SPSS. The result showed that there is any significant correlation between the students’ perception of suggestopedia principles and students’ vocabulary mastery since the coefficient correlation is 0.618 at the significant level of 0.01 and the coefficient correlation was higher than the critical value of r table (0.6180.325). It means that the null hypothesis was rejected and the research hypothesis was accepted. It could be concluded that the principles of suggestopedia in teaching vocabulary can accelerate students’ memorization ability, make students enjoy and relax in teaching based on suggestopedia principles.Keywords: Suggestopedia, Perception, Vocabulary 

    Students’ perception of using Google classroom for EFL learning

    Students need to be proficient in using technology, specifically e-learning apps like Google Classroom which is created by Google. Google Classroom connects with other Google apps such as Google Form, Google Drive, and Google Spreadsheet. Google Classroom is popular for academic purposes because it is user-friendly and does not take up much device storage space. A study was conducted to determine students' perceptions of using Google Classroom. Qualitative research is the research design in this study. The questionnaire, which contained 13 questions, was administered using Google Forms and data analysis was conducted using SPSS. The results of the study indicated that students agreed with using Google Classroom, but emphasized the need to integrate it with face-to-face learning, which aids their comprehension of material. Additionally, students find Google Classroom helpful for submitting assignments or accessing supplementary materials

    The correlation between University students’ involvement in AIESEC (Association Internationale des Etudians en Sciences Economique et Commerciales) and their English public speaking ability

    The objective of this research was to investigate whether or not there was a significant correlation between University students’ involvement in AIESEC and their English public speaking ability. The research involved 30 students of Lampung University by employing quantitative research by distributing questionnaire dealing with involvement in AIESEC and public speaking performance in order to collect the data. The data were analyzed using product moment correlation in SPSS 26.The result showed that University students’ involvement in AIESEC correlates with the public speaking ability with a significant correlation coefficient (r) 0.8. From the result, it can be concluded that University students’ involvement in AIESEC significantly contributes to students’ performance in public speaking.Keywords: Public speaking, University students’ involvement, AIESEC, correlation

    The effect of indirect written corrective feedback on students' recount writing performance at the first grade of senior high school

    The aims of this research were to find out whether there was any effect of Indirect Written Corrective Feedback on students’ recount writing performance and to analyze which aspect of writing improved the most after the implementation of Indirect Written Corrective Feedback. This research is quantitative research using one group pre-test and post-test design. The population was the first-grade students of SMA Perintis 1 Bandar Lampung. The sample was one class of the first grade: X2 class consisting of 30 students. The instrument was writing test in the form of essay. The data were in the form of scores taken from the pre-test and post-test which were analyzed by using Paired Sample t-test. The results showed that there was statistically significant difference between the mean score of the pre-test (56.8) and post-test (67.5). The significant value was determined by sign p0.05 with the result 0.000 0.05 and the t-value t-table with the result 18.270 2.045. The aspect of writing which improved the most was language use. This is because most of the Indirect Written Corrective Feedback used in this research focused on the English structure such as verb tense, verb form, preposition, word-order and subject-verb agreement which are covered in language use aspect of writing. It is suggested that Indirect Written Corrective Feedback can be implemented in teaching other types of text in a long-term period and other educational levels of school.
