    English Education students’ perceptions regarding the workshop of using artificial intelligence for developing listening question based on local wisdom

    This research aims to explore the students’ perceptions in the English Language Education Study Program at UIN Raden Mas Said Surakarta regarding the workshop on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in developing listening questions based on local wisdom. The method used is descriptive qualitative involving students as research subjects. Data was collected through the use of questionnaires distributed to students and analysis was carried out using a qualitative approach to understand their views, thoughts and perceptions regarding the use of AI in the context of learning English, especially listening skills. The results of this research provide in-depth insight into how English Language Education students assess the relevance, benefits and obstacles in using AI to develop listening questions that integrate local wisdom. The implications of these findings can be used as a basis for developing a more adaptive and innovative curriculum in the context of English language teaching that accommodates aspects of local wisdom

    Analysis of communication strategies used by students in business english classes at the faculty of economics and business, University of Lampung

    Communication plays an important role in today's global environment because everyone will be inseparable from communication activities. Language is a communication tool used as a means to express and convey information, to learn about people and the world around them. This study describes the use of communication strategies in  English classes in the Department of Management, Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Lampung (FEB Unila). This study aims to find out how the use of  communication strategies  by students during discussions in class and  their speaking skills in using these communication strategies.  This study used a case study approach to investigate the use of communication strategies at the perspective  of language proficiency because the most significant predictor of  the use of a particular communication strategy was language proficiency. The subjects of this study were taken purposively as  much as 1 class with a total of 36 students with high and low proficiency levels. They are first-year students of the S1 Management Department at FEB Unila. In this study, researchers used several data sources, namely observation, interviews, and documentation. This is intended to answer research questions based on data triangulation so that the data obtained is more reliable. The results of this study show that there are nine communication strategies used by learners in speaking for discussion; message abandonment, approximation, stalling, literal translation, code switching, convoluted, begging for help, mime, and using versatile words. The study also found that the strategies used in learning influenced learning outcomes in English communication where strategies such as approximation, literal translation, stalling, convoluted, asking for help, and mime greatly helped learners to express their ideas in discussions and were shown to get good and excellent grades in almost all speaking performance criteria.  Keywords: Communication Strategies, English Language Teaching, Business English

    TESL pre-service teachers’ perceptions on the use of Jazz chants in primary ESL classroom

    Learning vocabulary is an essential aspect of mastering English language. In Malaysia, English as a second language (ESL) learners often struggle with memorizing vocabulary, which hinders their language acquisition. Since vocabulary grasp is a pre-requisite for language learning, Jazz chants can be an effective tool for ESL learners to learn vocabulary in the target language. This study used a survey approach to investigate the TESL pre-service teachers’ perceptions on the use of Jazz chants in primary ESL classrooms. A total of 203 TESL pre-service teachers from five Institutes of Teacher Education (ITEs) participated in the study, responding to a questionnaire on the use of Jazz chants to enhance vocabulary learning. The findings indicated that the majority of respondents provided positive feedback and had knowledge of Jazz chants, and they utilized it frequently in teaching vocabulary. Additionally, the researcher found out that there is a weak positive correlation between these two attributes

    Students’ perception of Google Translate as a media for translating English materials

    This research aims to describe students' perceptions of using Google Translate to translate English material. In this research, researchers used the ex-post facto method. The methodology used is quantitative, using a questionnaire with 40 Likert rating statements with 5 choices: strongly disagree, disagree, neutral, agree, and strongly agree. The population in this research was English Language Education Students at the University of Lampung, and the sample consisted of four batches, namely the 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022 classes. Data analysis was tested using the Rasch model via Winsteps software. Interesting findings were found that students showed different response patterns, while item analysis showed that there were six mismatched items and items in one construct measuring the same logit instrument with unidimensional and multiple item requirements as well as assessment validity, which indicated that ranking simplification would produce more measurement results. right. Data shows that all students know about Google Translate as a medium for translating from one language to another. Students consider using Google Translate to translate and use it to learn pronunciation and increase vocabulary. This means that students know other functions of Google Translate. In the learning process, students of the English education study program have a lot of English language material. In understanding English material, students admitted to using Google Translate to translate it into Indonesian and vice versa. Keywords: perception, google translate

    An error analysis of students’ descriptive writing at Khadijah Islamic boarding school

    The purposes of this research are to find out the types of grammatical errors in students’ descriptive writing and to find out the most frequent type of errors in students’ descriptive writing. The method of this research is a descriptive qualitative method. The data were collected from 22 descriptive writings which were written by the students. The researcher used the writings as the instrument. In this research, all types of grammatical errors were classified and described based on surface strategy taxonomy by Dulay Burt, and Krashen (1982). Based on the result of the analysis, there were 670 grammatical errors found in the students’ descriptive writing. Misformation error occupies the first rank with 286 errors. Then following closely is omission error with 260 errors, next is addition error with 90 errors, and the last one is misorder error with 34 errors.Keywords: Error Analysis, Surface Strategy Taxonomy, Writing, Second Language.

    The correlation between students’ perception of driving suggestopedia principles and students’ vocabulary mastery

    The objective of this research was to investigate whether there is any significant correlation between the students’ perception of suggestopedia principles and students’ vocabulary mastery. The population of this research was the first- and second-year students of SMP N 7 Metro in the academic year of 2021/2022. There are 60 students who were selected as research samples by using purposive sampling technique. The research instrument was a questionnaire and vocabulary mastery test. This research applied the correlation study of ex facto design in which the results were analyzed by using SPSS. The result showed that there is any significant correlation between the students’ perception of suggestopedia principles and students’ vocabulary mastery since the coefficient correlation is 0.618 at the significant level of 0.01 and the coefficient correlation was higher than the critical value of r table (0.618>0.325). It means that the null hypothesis was rejected and the research hypothesis was accepted. It could be concluded that the principles of suggestopedia in teaching vocabulary can accelerate students’ memorization ability, make students enjoy and relax in teaching based on suggestopedia principles.Keywords: Suggestopedia, Perception, Vocabulary 

    Students’ perception of using Google classroom for EFL learning

    Students need to be proficient in using technology, specifically e-learning apps like Google Classroom which is created by Google. Google Classroom connects with other Google apps such as Google Form, Google Drive, and Google Spreadsheet. Google Classroom is popular for academic purposes because it is user-friendly and does not take up much device storage space. A study was conducted to determine students' perceptions of using Google Classroom. Qualitative research is the research design in this study. The questionnaire, which contained 13 questions, was administered using Google Forms and data analysis was conducted using SPSS. The results of the study indicated that students agreed with using Google Classroom, but emphasized the need to integrate it with face-to-face learning, which aids their comprehension of material. Additionally, students find Google Classroom helpful for submitting assignments or accessing supplementary materials

    The correlation between students’ reading habit and students’ writing ability in narrative text

    This research were aimed to find out whether there was any positive correlation between students’ reading habit and students’ writing ability. This research used quantitative approach and the design was ex-post facto design, so there was no treatment in this research. The population in this study was the first grade students of SMA Swadhipa Natar, 37 students of X IPA 4 were taken as the samples through the use of cluster random sampling. To obtain the data, researcher used reading habit questionnaire and writing test in narrative text as the instruments. Moreover, the data were analyzed by using Pearson Product Moment Correlation in SPSS 26 version. The result of the data analysis showed that there was a positive correlation between students’ reading habit and students’ writing ability since the r-value (0.554) was higher than r-table (0.316). This indicated  that  the  more  students read, the higher writing ability she or he gets.Keywords: correlation, reading habit, writing ability

    The effect of using YouTube tutorial videos in English vocabulary learning at junior high school

    The objectives of the research are to find the significant difference on students’ vocabulary understanding after using YouTube Tutorial videos and students response toward the use of YouTube Tutorial videos. The population of this research was the third grade of students of SMP Negeri 4 Bandar Lampung in the academic year 2022/2023. The sample was class IXA which consisted of 30 students. The method of this research was quantitative with the research design One Group Pre-test and Post-test Design. The researcher used vocabulary test consisted 30 questions pre-test post-test to measure the significant difference and the questionnaire to find students response in the process of data collection. The researcher used SPSS and MS.Excel to analyze the data after those data has been collected. The result showed that there is a significant difference on students vocabulary understanding. The increase from the mean score was 13,6 where Post-test is 75,3 while the pre-test 61,7. The questionnaire distributed to students draw positive response where students who answered positive 25 students and negative 5 students, and the total of students response reached 64,26. The significant difference score demonstrates that using Youtube Tutorial video in the classroom has affect students ability to comprehend the vocabulary better. The result from the questionnaire percentage showed that students felt happy and enjoy the learning process using YouTube Tutorial video

    Teaching listening using non-subtitled animated Disney movies at SMAN 01 Kotabumi

    This study investigates whether Non-subtitled Animated Disney Movies canimprove students’ listening comprehension. To achieve the objective, students inclass XI Science 1 of SMAN 01 Kotabumi were involved, and the data wereobtained by using a listening test. Through data analysis, the mean score betweenthe pretest and posttest was 18.18 (from 66.73 to 84.91). The t-value was higherthan the t-table, and the value of the significant level was 0.00 < 0.05. Identifyingthe topic and identifying specific information were noted as the most improvedaspect among other aspect in listening comprehension. Teaching listening usingnon-subtitled animated Disney movie was recommended for teachers because it helpsthe student to pay attention more and improved their motivation to learn listeningcomprehension. Keywords: teaching listening, animated movie, listening comprehensio
