Discord in the Family Environment: Reviewing incidences of fratricide and sororicide in Malaysia

    Get PDF
Family discords or quarrels are considered normal and ordinary. However, the level and intensity of the discords and disputes have led to incidences of fratricide and sororicide. In the case of fratricide (the killing of oneā€™s brother) and sororicide (the killing of oneā€™s sister), the escalating number of incidences as reported in the media requires proper intervention by the relevant parties. The aim of this paper is to review published articles on family discords and violence, particularly on incidences of fratricide and sororicide. The findings and implications of the findings will be discussed in this review paper. Keywords: fratricide; sororicide; discord; family environmentISSN: 2398-4287Ā© 2017. The Authors. Get PDF
This paper describes the socio-psychological issues that hinder the holistic usage of ERP system among sampled Malaysian SMEā€™s that were the vendors through government outsourced projects. Five hundred questionnaires were sent to the pre-identified SMEs in Selangor through e-mail, 251 questionnaires were returned and only 110 were taken for data analysis, representing 44% of the response rate. The study found that the perceived benefits and social influence have positive significant relationship with the ERP system usage. The social influence has the strongest effect towards the ERP system usage among SMEs in Selangor. The system complexity does not influence the relationship between socio-psychological factors and ERP system usage among SMEs in Selangor. This study provides insight for the management of SMEs and the service providers on the factors influencing the ERP system usage. It contributes to the breadth of knowledge of the ERP system in SMEs from the perspective of a developing nation since the SMEs play an important role in the nationā€™s economy

How a city lost its waterfront : tracing the effects of policies on the sustainability of the Kuala Lumpur waterfront as a public place

    Get PDF
Kuala Lumpur owes its beginnings to the two rivers that transect its historic core but it lost its waterfront as a public place due to rapid urbanisation. The rivers were used as flood mitigation measures with limited visual and physical access to the public. This paper traces the effects of policies on the waterfront development of the city by focusing on the factors that contributed to its disappearance. It employs a qualitative approach by analysing the riverfront physical conditions based on old maps and photographs as well as government documents and in-depth interviews with local authority officials, architects and developers

Information prospecting in Malaysian small medium enterprises for competitive advantage

    No full text
Information prospecting or mining has never been more crucial in organizational decision making and strategic competitive advantage Without information and communication technologies (ICTs), most companies, particularly the small and medium enterprises (SMEs) would not be able to survive the demands of the current volatile economic conditions Hence, this paper reports the findings from the assessment of ICT usage by 300 SMEs in the Klang Valley, Malaysia Specifically, the usage of enterprise resource planning system (ERP) was assessed and the outcome showed that SMEs in Malaysia are still lagging in computer usage for improved organizational decision. The implications for non-usage bode negatively for SME's sustained survival although the government continued to offer assistance through the annual budget allocation. A strong and visionary leader would provide the basis to push the SMEs to achieve better returns of investment through strategic decision making. This paper has been presented at 2012 IEEE Symposium on Business, Engineering and Industrial Applications (ISBEIA

A preliminary study on households' perceived income position

    No full text
This paper investigates householdsā€™ perceived income position by means of a survey and regression. From the survey, respondents provide demographic information about themselves and their households. They evaluate their householdsā€™ income positions by selecting one of the ten income deciles in a distribution, hereafter defined as perceived income position. The objective income position is the income decile that each household is being assigned to, based on their reported total income and their position in the sample income distribution. For the regression, the dependent variable is bias, the difference between perceived and objective income decile. The independent variables include characteristics of respondents and households. The empirical results show that a significant number of low-income households rank themselves in higher income deciles than their objective income deciles, while many high-income households underestimate their rank. There are also six factors that determine bias. They are (1) respondents who are retirees, (2) respondents who have post-secondary education, (3) respondents with housing type of either a) 3-room, b) 5-room, c) landed, (4) number of family members with tertiary qualifications, (5) income expenditure ratio and (6) number of working family members.Bachelor of Art
