    Corporate social responsibility and corporate foundations in building responsible brands

    This article analyzes corporate brand management in companies that enforce a policy of corporate social responsibility (CSR) while also operating a corporate foundation that shares the same company name and brand. The study aimed to (1) define and analyze the presence of the corporate foundation and assess the alignment between brand and foundation in the context of corporate brand identity; and to (2) investigate brand manager perspectives on how corporate foundations promote the social dimensions of the brand and of a company’s corporate identity and culture. The corporate identity of 18 multinational companies and their corresponding foundations was investigated, and 8 prominent brand managers were interviewed

Su finalidad es insertar en la comunidad al individuo, ayudando a que éste aprenda a generar lazos sociales de nuevo. Uno de los papeles más importantes en la tarea, es la de los voluntarios. No se trata solamente de apoyar a un delincuente sexual a reinsertarse, sino de un proyecto cuya motivación va dirigida a crear una sociedad en la que no haya más víctimas de delitos sexuales. La realización de una investigación estadística sobre una pequeña muestra de estudiantes universitarios de Barcelona, nos proporcionará una orientación sobre el conocimiento del tratamiento para delincuentes y sobre la aceptación del programa CerclesCat por la población universitaria

    Exploring stakeholders’ dialogue and corporate social responsibility (CSR) on Twitter

    Social networks are an opportunity to foster and strengthen dialogue between companies and their audiences and also to integrate social expectations into their corporate social responsibility (CSR) strategies. This research analyses communication on CSR on Twitter and its main objectives are: 1) to analyze if there are CSR concepts which can lead the conversation among Twitter users and companies when discourse is limited to CSR related concepts; and 2) to detect those concepts which might create engagement (underlying conversations) between companies and Twitter users. Our research is focused on insurance companies included in the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI). The methodology used is qualitative and the sample comprises more than 8,500 tweets which include a set of keywords related to CSR, that were published by the companies in the sample and/or mentioned those companies. The results show that industry-related words, financial performance messages and the local activities of the company are opportunities to spread the CSR commitment. We concluded that communication is scarce between companies and users related to CSR. In general,companies and users shared interests, but these were not related to a real conversation about CSR and sustainability

    Effects of structural characteristics of (un)conjugated steroid metabolites in their collision cross section value

    In this work, the collision cross section (CCS) value of 103 steroids (including unconjugated metabolites and phase II metabolites conjugated with sulfate and glucuronide groups) was determined by liquid chromatography coupled to traveling wave ion mobility spectrometry (LC-TWIMS). A time of flight (QTOF) mass analyzer was used to perform the analytes determination at high-resolution mass spectrometry. An electrospray ionization source (ESI) was used to generate [M+H]+, [M + NH4]+ and/or [M − H]- ions. High reproducibility was observed for the CCS determination in both urine and standard solutions, obtaining RSD lower than 0.3% and 0.5% in all cases respectively. CCS determination in matrix was in accordance with the CCS measured in standards solution showing deviations below 2%. In general, CCS values were directly correlated with the ion mass and allowed differentiating between glucuronides, sulfates and free steroids although differences among steroids of the same group were less significant. However, more specific information was obtained for phase II metabolites observing differences in the CCS value of isomeric pairs concerning the conjugation position or the α/β configuration, which could be useful in the structural elucidation of new steroid metabolites in the anti-doping field. Finally, the potential of IMS reducing interferences from the sample matrix was also tested for the analysis of a glucuronide metabolite of bolasterone (5β-androstan-7α,17α-dimethyl-3α,17β-diol-3-glucuronide) in urine samples.The authors are grateful for the financial support received from Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad (CTQ2015-63968-C2-2-P) and University Jaume I (UJI-B2020-19).     Multiple headspace solid-phase microextraction (MHS-SPME) methodology applied to the determination of volatile metabolites of plasticizers in human urine

    In the present work, an optimization and validation of an analytical method for the determination of two plasticizer metabolites, 2-ethylhexanol and 4-heptanone in urine, were carried out by multiple headspace solid-phase microextraction (MHS-SPME) coupled to GC-MS. The validation study was successfully performed in terms of stability, method selectivity, linearity, accuracy, recovery, intermediate precision, repeatability, limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) in urine samples. Finally, two population group studies were developed in urine samples of volunteers with plastic exposure. First group represents the common plastic exposure of general population and the second one was carried out with healthy moderately trained individuals who have received blood transfusion. This study demonstrates that significantly increased levels of 2-ethylhexanol were found (p < 0.05) in urine samples of volunteers in the early hours after receiving blood transfusion.This work was funded by University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) (project GIU19/068) .     Prenatal exposure to mixtures of phthalates and phenols and body mass index and blood pressure in Spanish preadolescents

    Background: Pregnant women are simultaneously exposed to several non-persistent endocrine-disrupting chem-icals, which may influence the risk of childhood obesity and cardiovascular diseases later in life. Previous prospective studies have mostly examined single-chemical effects, with inconsistent findings. We assessed the association between prenatal exposure to phthalates and phenols, individually and as a mixture, and body mass index (BMI) and blood pressure (BP) in preadolescents. Methods: We used data from the Spanish INMA birth cohort study (n = 1,015), where the 1st and 3rd-trimester maternal urinary concentrations of eight phthalate metabolites and six phenols were quantified. At 11 years of age, we calculated BMI z-scores and measured systolic and diastolic BP. We estimated individual chemical effects with linear mixed models and joint effects of the chemical mixture with hierarchical Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR). Analyses were stratified by sex and by puberty status. Results: In single-exposure models, benzophenone-3 (BP3) was nonmonotonically associated with higher BMI z -score (e.g. Quartile (Q) 3: beta = 0.23 [95% CI = 0.03, 0.44] vs Q1) and higher diastolic BP (Q2: beta = 1.27 [0.00, 2.53] mmHg vs Q1). Methyl paraben (MEPA) was associated with lower systolic BP (Q4: beta =-1.67 [-3.31,-0.04] mmHg vs Q1). No consistent associations were observed for the other compounds. Results from the BKMR confirmed the single-exposure results and showed similar patterns of associations, with BP3 having the highest importance in the mixture models, especially among preadolescents who reached puberty status. No overall mixture effect was found, except for a tendency of higher BMI z-score and lower systolic BP in girls. Conclusions: Prenatal exposure to UV-filter BP3 may be associated with higher BMI and diastolic BP during preadolescence, but there is little evidence for an overall phthalate and phenol mixture effect.We thank all study participants for their generous collaboration.     Organocatalytic vs. Ru-based electrochemical hydrogenation of nitrobenzene in competition with the hydrogen evolution reaction

    The electrochemical reduction of organic contaminants allows their removal from water. In this contribution, the electrocatalytic hydrogenation of nitrobenzene is studied using both oxidized carbon fibres and ruthenium nanoparticles supported on unmodified carbon fibres as catalysts. The two systems produce azoxynitrobenzene as the main product, while aniline is only observed in minor quantities. Although PhNO2 hydrogenation is the favoured reaction, the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) competes in both systems under catalytic conditions. H2 formation occurs in larger amounts when using the Ru nanoparticle based catalyst. While similar reaction outputs were observed for both catalytic systems, DFT calculations revealed some significant differences related to distinct interactions between the catalytic material and the organic substrates or products, which could pave the way for the design of new catalytic materials
