BackgroundBezafibrate (BZF) is effective in the treatment of hypertriglyceridemia in human patients, but there are no data on its use in dogs.ObjectiveTo assess the safety of BZF in hyperlipidemic dogs and its efficacy in decreasing serum triglyceride (TG) and cholesterol (CHO) concentrations.AnimalsForty-six dogs, 26 females and 20 males, mean (±SD) age of 9 (±3) years, with TG ≥150 mg/dL (33 dogs also were hypercholesterolemic [>300 mg/dL]).MethodsProspective, uncontrolled clinical trial. Dogs were treated with bezafibrate once daily, using 200 mg tablets at a dosage of 4-10 mg/kg (depending on body weight). Serum TG and CHO concentrations and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and creatine kinase (CK) activity before and after 30 days of treatment were compared.ResultsSixteen dogs (34.8%) had primary hyperlipidemia, and 30 dogs (65.2%) had secondary hyperlipidemia (including spontaneous hyperadrenocorticism [41.3%, n = 19/46], chronic treatment with glucocorticoids [10.8%, n = 5/46], and hypothyroidism [15.2%, n = 7/46]). After 30 days, serum TG concentration normalized (<150 mg/dL) in 42 dogs (91.3%) and CHO concentration normalized (<270 mg/dL) in 22 of 33 dogs (66.7%). There was no difference in baseline TG concentration between the primary and secondary hyperlipidemia subgroups, but the decrease in TG concentration after treatment was greater in the primary hyperlipidemia subgroup. No adverse effects were observed, but ALT activity decreased significantly after 30 days of treatment. Conclusions and clinical importanceOver 30 days, BZF was safe and effective in treatment of primary and secondary hyperlipidemia in dogs

Hadron Mass Spectrum and the Shear Viscosity to Entropy Density Ratio of Hot Hadronic Matter

Lattice calculations of the QCD trace anomaly at temperatures T<160T<160 MeV have been shown to match hadron resonance gas model calculations, which include an exponentially rising hadron mass spectrum. In this paper we perform a more detailed comparison of the model calculations to lattice data that confirms the need for an exponentially increasing density of hadronic states. Also, we find that the lattice data is compatible with a hadron density of states that goes as ρ(m)maexp(m/TH)\rho(m) \sim m^{-a}\exp(m/T_H) at large mm with a>5/2a> 5/2 (where TH167T_H \sim 167 MeV). With this specific subleading contribution to the density of states, heavy resonances are most likely undergo 2-body decay (instead of multi-particle decay), which facilitates their inclusion into hadron transport codes. Moreover, estimates for the shear viscosity and the shear relaxation time coefficient of the hadron resonance model computed within the excluded volume approximation suggest that these transport coefficients are sensitive to the parameters that define the hadron mass spectrum.Comment: 16 pages, 12 figure

Anterior Segment Optical Coherence Tomography Imaging of Filtering Blebs after Deep Sclerectomy with Esnoper-Clip Implant: One-year Follow-up

    Get PDF
Purpose: To describe the technique of deep sclerectomy with the new Esnoper-Clip® implant, the clinical outcome and the anatomic characteristics of filtering blebs, using anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT). Methods: A prospective case-series study was conducted in five eyes (5 patients) with open angle glaucoma. The fornixbased deep sclerectomy with Esnoper-Clip® implant was done by the same surgeon. In one case, mitomycin C was used during surgery. All participants underwent a complete ophthalmic examination and AS-OCT (Visante®) preoperatively, then at each follow-up visit, at 1 day, 1 week, 1 month, 6 months and 1 year postoperatively. Scans were obtained through sagittal and transversal plans to the implant. Results: Intraocular pressure (IOP) was significantly reduced (p < 0.05) from a mean preoperative value of 23.4 ± 8.6 mm Hg (n = 3.8 glaucoma medications) to a postoperative value of 6.0 ± 2.5 (n = 0), 10.6 ± 5.4 (n = 0), 13 ± 1.6 (n = 0.4), 12.4 ± 2.1 (n = 0.2) and 14.4 ± 1.5 (n = 0.2) at 1 day, 1 week, 1 month, 6 months and 1 year respectively. AS-OCT allowed the visualization of the two plates of the implant (scleral and suprasciliary), the trabeculodescemetic membrane and the hyporeflective spaces in the bleb wall thickness and in suprascleral and suprachoroidal localizations. An immediate postoperative hypotony and an anteriorization of the implant associated to trabeculodescemetic membrane rupture, were detected, although without significant clinical repercussions. Conclusion: Our first five deep sclerectomy with Esnoper-Clip implantation analysis suggest an effective and well-tolerated method to reduce IOP. AS-OCT is a noninvasive imaging technique that allows the anatomic analysis of the drainage mechanisms after glaucoma surgery.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Tkachenko modes as sources of quasiperiodic pulsar spin variations

We study the long wavelength shear modes (Tkachenko waves) of triangular lattices of singly quantized vortices in neutron star interiors taking into account the mutual friction between the superfluid and the normal fluid and the shear viscosity of the normal fluid. The set of Tkachenko modes that propagate in the plane orthogonal to the spin vector are weakly damped if the coupling between the superfluid and normal fluid is small. In strong coupling, their oscillation frequencies are lower and are undamped for small and moderate shear viscosities. The periods of these modes are consistent with the observed ~100-1000 day variations in spin of PSR 1828-11.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, uses RevTex, v2: added discussion/references, matches published versio

Da Crítica à Religião à Teoria do Fetichismo em Marx

    Get PDF

Phaeochromocytoma Associated to Von Recklinghausen Neurofibromatosis Type I: a Rare Clinical Case

    Get PDF
