Cosmarium Corda ex Ralfs (Desmidiaceae) em um lago artificial urbano, Paraná, Brasil

The aim of this work is the taxonomic survey of species of the genus Cosmarium from Lago Municipal de Cascavel, Paraná. Samples collections were carried out between 2002 to 2003, 2007 and 2008, in the lake littoral zone with phytoplankton net. Eighteen taxa were identified, described and illustrated, which three species, fifteen varieties and one forms a taxonomic. Nine taxa (50%) of total were first cited to the Paraná State: C. denticulatum Borge var.  ovale, C. depressum (Nägeli) Lundell var. elevatum Borge, C. galeritum Nordstedt var. galeritum, C. montrealense Croasdale, C. pseudopyramidatum P. Lundell var. pseudopyramidatum, C. pseudopyramidatum var. maximum Börgesen, C. quadrum Lundell var. minus Nordstedt, C. regnellii Wille var. regnellii e C. variolatum Raciborski var. cataractarum.O objetivo deste trabalho foi o levantamento taxonômico das espécies do gênero Cosmarium no Lago Municipal de Cascavel, Paraná. As coletas foram realizadas nos anos de 2002 a 2003 e 2007 a 2008, na região litorânea do lago, utilizando-se uma rede de plâncton. Foram identificados, descritos e ilustrados dezoito táxons, sendo três espécies, quinze variedades e uma forma taxonômica. Chlorophyceae e Trebouxiophyceae (Chlorophyta) em ambientes lóticos na área de influência da Usina Hidrelétrica do Baixo Iguaçu, Estado do Paraná, Brasil

The presence of microscopic algae of the classes Chlorophyceae and Trebouxiophyceae in lotic environments stands out for its high morphologic diversity and its capacity to indicate the quality of the water. This study had the objective of accomplishing the taxonomic survey of rivers from the area of influence of Baixo Iguaçu’s hydroelectric power plant. The monthly samples were collected from january of 2019 to december of 2019 allowing the identification of 55 taxons, distributed in eight families Hydrodictyaceae, Scenedesmaceae, Selenastraceae, Sphaeropleaceae, Volvocaceae, Chlorellaceae, Oocystaceae and Trebouxiophyceae incertae sedis. Between the identified taxa, 12 are new citations for Paraná State: Monactinus simplex var. echinulatum (Wittrock) Pérez, Monactinus simplex var. sturmii (Reinsch) Pérez, Pseudopediastrum boryanum var. longicorne (Reinsch) Tsarenko, Desmodesmus lefevrei (Deflandre) S.S.An, T.Friedl & E.H.Hegewald, Desmodesmus opoliensis var. carinatus (Lemmermann) E.Hegewald, Desmodesmus perforatus (Lemmermann) E.Hegewald, Pectinodesmus javanensis (Chodat) E.Hegewald, Scenedesmus acunae Comas Gonzáles, Quadrigula closterioides (Bohlin) Printz, Volvox globator Linnaeus, Actinastrum aciculare f. minimum (Huber-Pestalozzi), Actinastrum hantazschii var. subtile Woloszynska.A presença de microalgas das classes Chlorophyceae e Trebouxiophyceae em ambientes lóticos se destaca por sua alta diversidade morfológica e sua capacidade de indicar a qualidade da água. The role of religious beliefs and practice in the lives of older men in residential nursing homes: a case study of the role of Islam in nursing homes in Saudi Arabia and the implications for policy and practice

Increasing attention in the social science literature, particularly within the sociology of religion, psychology and gerontology is being given to the role of religion in the lives of older people. Moreover, research has repeatedly identified religion as a significant coping resource throughout human life. Through the use of the biographical narrative method of interviewing, and the subsequent thematic analysis of the data, this study focuses on the role of religious beliefs and practices in the life experiences of older men in two selected Saudi nursing homes. The research demonstrates the positive influence of religion on adjustment processes in later life in general and specifically on adjusting to life in a nursing home. The study shows that religion serves as an important thread of integration in older men's lives. As they grew older, the respondents in this research had become more religious and more involved in religious practices. The study found that religion was an important dimension in their everyday life. All of them had integrated religious beliefs and practices into their lives to help them respond positively to the difficulties which they experienced. Above all, they strongly believed that leading a religious (Islamic) life was their duty as Muslims and this would also lead to their being rewarded by God in the Hereafter, as they believed that a truly happy life would come after death. Based upon its findings, the study highlights the need to acknowledge the importance of religion in the social care provision for older people in Saudi Arabia, for example, in counselling, in social work provision in general and within residential homes for older men in particular

Notas taxonômicas sobre o gênero Nitella C. Agardh (Characeae) da Região Metropolitana de Feira de Santana, Estado da Bahia, Brasil

From a floristic study of the Family Characeae in the Metropolitan Region of Feira de Santana, Bahia State, we detected four species of Nitella, of which two are new additions for that state: N. axillaris, and N. praelonga, the latter being, of rare occurrence in Brazil, reported for the first time for the northeastern Brazil. The materials were analyzed using photonic and scanning electron microscopy. For all these species we provide descriptions, information on habitat, geographic distribution in Brazil and taxonomic notes.A partir de um estudo florístico da Família Characeae na Região Metropolitana de Feira de Santana, Estado da Bahia, detectamos quatro espécies de Nitella, das quais duas são adições para o Estado: N. axillaris e N. praelonga, esta última, de ocorrência rara no Brasil, relatada pela primeira vez para o Nordeste brasileiro. Os materiais foram analisados através de microscopia fotônica e eletrônica de varredura.
