Investing in Human Resource Planning: An International Study
In this paper we study drivers of firms’ human resource planning practices. This is
done by analyzing two central parts of personnel planning, formal HRM strategies and
analyses of competence development needs. Data collected from 3,877 firms in 21
countries are applied in the analysis. Nine out of ten firms conduct analyses of needs
for competence development to some extent, while every second firm in the sample
has elaborated a formal HRM strategy. Results indicate that resources (size, having an
HRM department and corporate affiliation) and to some degree cost-benefit considerations
are the main determinants of these human resource planning arrangements.
Moreover, institutional factors have an impact on firms’ use of competence needs analyses
Determinants of executive incentive pay in Europe
In this paper we study possible determinants of the use of incentive pay for managers in European companies. Data
from 5,000 firms in 15 countries are used to analyze the degree to which incentive pay is associated with national
embeddedness, local labour market institutions, ownership, and internationalization of markets. We find that companies
in countries with high scores on power distance and individualism tend to use incentive schemes for managers more
frequently than companies with lower scores on these cultural dimensions. Centralized wage bargaining and unionization
at the firm level tend to reduce the prevalence of such schemes. Incentive pay is less common in state-owned companies
than in privately owned firms. The findings also reveal that the more global the market in which a firm operates, the
greater the probability that it will implement incentive pay elements for its managers. Our results suggest that unions,
national labour market institutions and social and cultural norms serve as buffers against the introduction of US-style
compensation system
Which patient’s keeper? Partiality and justice in nursing care
This thesis studies the conflicting normative claims of partiality and impartiality in nursing
care. The principal focus and aim of the study is to establish an argument for permissible
partiality in nursing care. Partiality here is understood as giving preference to one patient’s
nursing-care needs over those of other patients based on relational proximity to the actual
patient. The study assumes that prioritisations in health care give rise to moral dilemmas in
clinical nursing care. One such dilemma is how to reconcile qualified concerns for the
particular patient with equally important concerns for the maximisation of health-related
welfare for all with relevant nursing-care needs. The trend in clinical nursing care is that
qualified attention to the nursing-care needs of the individual patient increasingly is
constrained because nurses’ ability to accomplish the mandate of the nursing profession is
progressively becoming compromised by the demands of cost-efficient health care.
This situation amplifies a significant normative imbalance between concerns for relational and
individual care and concerns for distributive justice. It also highlights the growing importance
of debates about reasonable and legitimate forms of partiality in nursing care. The discussion
in this thesis is based on different positions and theories in moral philosophy, and the
challenge is how discussions of partiality and impartiality in moral philosophy can have
relevance to the professional context of clinical nursing care as well as in nursing ethics in
general. This challenge is met through an exploration of how to conceptualise professional
roles and ethical responsibility in nursing. It is argued that the role of a nurse should be
comprehended as a professional role distinct from other contractual role occupations, thereby
influencing the way role morality is understood. Nursing involves role-relative ethical
concerns and obligations that combine impartial and the partial views.
Nurses are committed to individualised nursing care as one of the most important
responsibilities of their profession. Nursing care takes place in nursing projects, in relational
proximity to the individual patient. Any aspect of nursing care requires various degrees of
time and attention in order to be adequate and tailored to the individual. Therefore, it is
argued that nurses, in some situations, are permitted to be partial in order to uphold their
professional commitment. Though partiality sometimes might trump impartial concerns of
distributive justice, it is also constrained by both principled and context-sensitive assessments
of patients’ needs, as well as of the role-relative deontological restriction of minimising harm. Some of the conflicts discussed in this research can be framed as moral dilemmas of a tragic
nature, which cannot be solved without some kind of negative consequence. It is proposed
that some of these difficult situations could and should be mitigated by institutional and
organisational adaptations and decisions at a macro level. Finally, I suggest how a framework
for normative nursing ethics could incorporate a notion of permissible partiality, and specify
which concerns an ethics of nursing care should entail when balancing partialist and
impartialist concerns.
i sykepleie.
pasient. En sentral antakelse for studien er at prioriteringer i helsetjenestene medfører
moralske dilemmaer i klinisk sykepleie.
Diskusjonen i denne
Aspektene i sykepleie
opprettholde deres profesjonelle forpliktelse.
The master thesis explores the concept of nature positivity and tools landscape architecture that can be used to transform urban development projects from risk-reducing to nature positive. The thesis is based on three Norwegian certification systems for urban development projects; BREEAM-NOR, Blue-Green Factor, and FutureBuilt. The certification systems are examined in terms of the extent to which they identify, preserve, restore, and enhance natural values, as well as whether they encourage the use of nature-based solutions. The exploration and investigations carried out indicate that none of the certification systems can currently ensure nature positive urban development projects. Other tools are also explored, including global biodiversity targets, national laws, guidelines, and strategies.
Based on the knowledge base and investigations, the assignment presents recommendations for a nature positive landscape architecture. Five prerequisites for enabling nature-positive development are described. While the theory focuses on the ecosystem service approach, tools developed based on ecosystem services are explored. Before specific recommendations for further developing the certification systems are presented.
The master thesis is a knowledge repository for nature positive development in the construction industry, with the purpose of serving as a discussion basis for further development of nature-positive tools at the project level, as well as at the municipal and national levels
Impact of competitive flow on wall shear stress in coronary surgery: computational fluid dynamics of a LIMA-LAD model
Competitive flow from native coronary vessels is considered a major factor in the failure of coronary bypass grafts. However, the pathophysiological effects are not fully understood. Low and oscillatory wall shear stress (WSS) is known to induce endothelial dysfunction and vascular disease, like atherosclerosis and intimal hyperplasia. The aim was to investigate the impact of competitive flow on WSS in mammary artery bypass grafts.
Using computational fluid dynamics, WSS was calculated in a left internal mammary artery (LIMA) graft to the left anterior descending artery in a three-dimensional in vivo porcine coronary artery bypass graft model. The following conditions were investigated: high competitive flow (non-significant coronary lesion), partial competitive flow (significant coronary lesion), and no competitive flow (totally occluded coronary vessel). Time-averaged WSS of LIMA at high, partial, and no competitive flow were 0.3-0.6, 0.6-3.0, and 0.9-3.0 Pa, respectively. Further, oscillatory WSS quantified as the oscillatory shear index (OSI) ranged from (maximum OSI = 0.5 equals zero net WSS) 0.15 to 0.35, < 0.05, and < 0.05, respectively. Thus, high competitive flow resulted in substantial oscillatory and low WSS. Moderate competitive flow resulted in WSS and OSI similar to the no competitive flow condition.
Graft flow is highly dependent on the degree of competitive flow. High competitive flow was found to produce unfavourable WSS consistent with endothelial dysfunction and subsequent graft narrowing and failure. Partial competitive flow, however, may be better tolerated as it was found to be similar to the ideal condition of no competitive flow
