Augmented reality or also known as AR is not a new technology. The technology has existed for almost 40 years ago after Ivan Sutherland introduced the first virtual reality (VR) application. At that time, works and research were mainly concerned to establish the hardware aspects of the technology. The head-mounted display (HMD) or some might called head-worn display is the result of augmented reality research and also one of the fundamental equipment for accessing the technology. As time goes by, the augmented reality technology has begin to mature to a point where the hardware cost and capabilities have collided to deliver a more feasible AR thus enable the rapid development of AR applications in many fields including education. To create a non-commercial AR application specifically for education, the ARToolkit can be taken into consideration. ARToolkit is the product of AR community and it is registered under the GNU General Public License. The user is provided with basic source code that lets the user easily develop Augmented Reality applications. Despite the fact that AR is not a new technology, people may unaware or unfamiliar with its existence. Therefore this paper is intended to (1) give an overview of augmented reality; and provides (2) solution to the technical problems that one’s will face in setting up open-source augmented reality toolkit

Composites of polypropylene (PP) and oil palm empty fruit bunch (OPEFB) were prepared by melt blending, and the effects of ethylene-butene copolymer (EBNR) as an impact modifier, on the mechanical and thermal properties of OPEFB:PP composites were investigated by using FTIR, DSC, TGA and SEM. Composites were prepared at 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60% by weight of fibre. Different fibre loading, temperatures, rotation time and rotation speeds were tested to determine the optimum condition of blending. Two range sizes of fibre were used in this study and there are below 200 μm and between 200-315 μm of length (known as 200 μm and 315 μm). The study was mainly conducted on composite with 20% and 40% fibre loading. The optimum temperature and reaction period for blending OPEFB with PP were 170oC and 10 minutes with rotation speed at 50 rpm, respectively. The result from FTIR analysis indicated that the interaction is only physical between the components of the composite. Tensile tests on the composites showed that EBNR had a positive effect on the elongation at break and negative effect on tensile modulus, but no improvement on tensile strength. This impact modifier was found to decrease the stiffness of the composites. The impact strength was improved in addition of EBNR, but for flexural test, no significant effect was observed. The increasing in impact strength was shown for both notched and unnotched samples starting from 1% of EBNR loading but they reduced when it reached at optimum volume. Smaller fibre size, 200 μm gave higher impact strength compared to 315 μm. The presence of EBNR on the composite made a weak improvement in thermal stability as shown by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). DMA studies established that the EBNR led to reduction of stiffness and enhancing mobility of the resulting composite. The surface morphology showed less void in EBNR composites where OPEFB fibre seems to be covered with a smooth layer of EBNR. The environmental degradation behaviour on the physical and mechanical properties of OPEFB:PP composites has been studied with special reference to the influence of ageing conditions like treatment with water, soil degradation, and chemical resistance. With the increased of fibre loading, the water absorption was also increased, and the addition of EBNR led to less water absorption, and the lowest absorption was observed for 8% EBNR loading. Tensile properties decrease with water uptake and time of immersion. The effect of alkaline (0.5M NaOH) and acidic (0.5M HCl) solutions on the composites were investigated in a period of one month. The results showed the decreasing in tensile strength and mass. Temperature dependence studies were also conducted at different temperature, 25oC, 45oC and 75oC, and found that the degradation was faster at higher temperature. The biodegradability of composites was evaluated by the soil-burial test in six months. The mass of composites slowly showed the decreasing after that time as expected

Functionalized Multiwall Carbon Nanotubes For Efficiency Enhancement Used Of Nitrogenous Fertilizer In Paddy

The efficient use of urea fertilizer (UF) as an important nitrogen (N) source in the rice production has been a concern. The main problem is significant amount of the N fertilizer is lost during the year of application. Various studies that had adequately addressed the issue by using UF, which contains high amounts of N (47%) have so far had little success. Nanotechnology advancements in nutrition strategies involving multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) have attempted to provide solutions for N losses and low N use efficiency (NUE) by plants. However, agglomerates of MWCNTs limit their efficient mobility properties. Since a high degree of MWCNTs functionalization would lead to separation of nanotubes bundle, advanced N Nano-carrier is developed based on f-MWCNTs grafted with UF to produce urea-MWCNTs (UF-MWCNTs) for enhancing the nitrogen uptake (NU) and NUE. The grafted N can be absorbed and utilized by rice efficiently to overcome the N propensity for loss from soil‐plant systems when UFMWCNTs are applied as fertilizer. Screening process parameters were structured via Plackett Burman experimental design of experiment involving nine identified factors, which were the amount of MWCNTs, percentage of functionalization, stirring time, stirring temperature, agitation, sonication frequency, sonication temperature, sonication time and amount of ammonium chloride with corresponding response of Total N attached on the surface of MWCNTs. As a result, functionalization and amount of MWCNTs used were found to be the most significant factors and chosen for further optimization processes. Analyses were structured via the Response Surface Methodology based on a five-level Central Composite Design consisting of f-MWCNTs amount between 0.10–0.60wt% and functionalization reflux time varying from 12-24hrs as the design factors. The individual and interaction effects between the specified factors and the corresponding responses (NUE, NU) were investigated. The UF-MWCNTs with optimized 0.5wt% f-MWCNTs treated at 21hrs functionalization reflux time achieved tremendous NUE up to 96% and NU at 1180mg/pot. A significant model term (p-value < 0.05) for NUE and NU responses were confirmed by the ANOVA of two quadratic models. Homogeneous dispersion with non-agglomerate features was observed on UF-MWCNTs via FESEM and TEM. Direct evidence regarding the physical translocation of biodegraded f-MWCNTs through phospholipid bilayers into plant roots involving soil-plant interaction via mass flow route and direct penetration into the subcellular region of the plant cells were revealed via TEM imaging investigation. Surface functionalization was strongly suggested to have a bigger effect on the translocation of f-MWCNTs than the size factor. The chemical changes were monitored by FT-IR and Raman spectroscopy. Hence, this UF-MWCNTs approach provides a promising strategy in enhancing plant nutrition for rice
