A Qualitative Study Using Community Cultural Wealth to Understand the Educational Experiences of Latino College Students
The Latino population is the largest minority group in the United States (Quijada & Alvarez, 2006) and has the highest high school dropout rate of any ethnic group (American Council on Education, 2008). If the U.S. is to compete in the global economy, it is important to understand factors that facilitate or hider the academic performance of Latino students. This qualitative study provides rich narratives on how Latino students used community cultural wealth, including knowledge, skills, abilities and networks, to excel in educational settings and overcome obstacles. A total of 15 individuals participated in the study. Findings suggest that Latino students overcome structural and cultural obstacles using various forms of community cultural wealth. In addition, the article provides recommendations based on participant’s experiences and previous research to increase Latino students’ success. It is the hope of the authors that findings from the present study will provide insight into the factors that facilitate Latino student success
A Case Study of Elementary Teachers’ Critical Understanding of Culturally Relevant Science Education: Mexican American Teachers of Mexican American Students
There is much research on White teachers’ negative assumptions and biases about their students of color. Less is known about Mexican American teachers. It is often assumed that there exists a strong understanding of culturally relevant science when both teachers and students are of similar cultural backgrounds. Through the conceptual frameworks of culturally relevant pedagogy and LatCrit, this investigation gave insight into, not only the ways the Mexican American teachers conceptualized culturally relevant science as part of their pedagogy, but also the struggles they experienced with the Spanish language. This study added insight by exploring the interactions of Mexican American teachers and their students in the setting of the fifth grade science classroom. Mexican American teachers experienced struggles and tensions negotiating with intersecting identities. Through an inductive approach, data was collected through pre and post interviews, lesson observations, reflective journals, and school documents from two participants and with the author as participant observer. Findings that emerged included 1) personal tensions with the Spanish language, 2) conceptualized Spanish language tensions in the classroom, 3) a struggle with dichotomous feelings of caring and complicity, and 4) cultural relevance gives way to a curriculum infused with White ideology. The organization of this dissertation began with a description of the data on each participant, the analyzation of the data, researcher’s reflexivity, and a summarization.
Teachers in this study experienced a rigid dichotomy of feeling proud of their Mexican American heritage yet feeling an allegiance to the colonized Eurocentric patriarchy in power. Likewise, they struggled with promoting English as the dominant language yet implying that the Spanish language was not valued in an academic setting. Implications from the findings are that teachers of color are not very different from White teachers because of the acculturation and assimilation from hegemony of the dominant culture they have acquired in the American education system. Findings from this study exhibited teachers of color being complicit to the hegemony of whiteness in public schools and participated in the assimilation of their students due to the fidelity to the whitened curriculum
A type-theoretic framework for certified model transformations
"We present a framework based on the Calculus of Inductive Constructions (CIC) and its associated tool the Coq proof assistant to allow certification of model transformations in the context of Model-Driven Engineering (MDE). The approached is based on a semi-automatic translation process from metamodels, models and transformations of the MDE technical space into types, propositions and functions of the CIC technical space. We describe this translation and illustrate its use in a standard case study." [Abstract
Experiment with a type-theoretic approach to the verification of model transformations
"This paper presents ongoing work on the application of constructive type theory for safe development in Model-Driven Engineering. In particular, we put into practice a certification framework based on the Calculus of Inductive Constructions (CIC) as follows: we first describe methods for representing metamodels and specifications of model transformations as types and then outline principles for representing given transformations, written in a certain transformation language, as functions in CIC. Then properties of these functions are proven, including their correctness with respect to sufficiently expressive specifications, thereby providing a semiformal way to verify the original transformations. We carry out a concrete case taken from an on-line base of basic examples and patterns of use of the ATL transformation language, implementing it on machine using the Coq proof assistant." [Abstract

Representation of metamodels using inductive types in a type-theoretic framework for MDE
We present discussions on how to apply a type-theoretic framework composed out by the Calculus of Inductive Constructions and its associated tool the Coq proof assistant to the formal treatment of model transformations in the context of Model-Driven Engineering. We start by studying how to represent models and metamodels in the mentioned theory, which leads us to a formalization in which a metamodel is a collection of mutually defined inductive types representing its various classes and associations. This representation has been put into use for carrying out and verifying on machine the well-known case study of the Class to Relational model transformation. We finally end up discussing ways in which the framework can be used to obtain provably correct model transformations
