Abstract. This presentation has the goal of depicting a case concerning the application of the concept of didactical suitability, in a context of mathematics teachers' initial training, developed in a Portuguese University. The case in question shows a teacher apprentice that is aware of and intent on valuing the concept of didactical probity through its cohesive and sustained application. The future teacher accomplishes this as much at the step of teaching preparation regarding a mathematical concept, as at the step of posterior reflection on the teaching process of said concept. This future teacher's case allows us to understand the contribution of didactical suitability in the promotion of competences in didactical analysis of the teaching and learning of mathematical concepts

Non trivial critical exponents for finite temperature chiral transitions at fixed total fermion number

We analyze the finite temperature chiral restoration transition of the (D=d+1)(D=d+1)-dimensional Gross-Neveu model for the case of a large number of flavors and fixed total fermion number. This leads to the study of the model with a nonzero imaginary chemical potential. In this formulation of the theory, we have obtained that, in the transition region, the model is described by a chiral conformal field theory where the concepts of dimensional reduction and universality do apply due to a transmutation of statistics which makes fermions act as if they were bosons, having zero energy. This result should be generic for theories with dynamical symmetry breaking, such as Quantum Chromodynamics.Comment: 14 pages Latex, no figures, final version to be published in Phys. Lett.

Thermodynamical behavior of the Blume-Capel model in the vicinity of its tricritical point

We investigate the thermodynamic properties of the zero-field Blume-Capel model in the vicinity of its tricritical point (TCP). We calculate the quadrupole moment, internal energy, and entropy densities employing an exact numerical recursion procedure for the model defined on a hierarchical lattice of fractal dimension dd. We explore the scaling behavior of the isothermal quadrupolar susceptibility and, the isothermal and constant crystal-field specific heat as a function of the temperature and the reduced crystal-field parameter along the ferromagnetic and the \emph{ordered paramagnetic} phase frontier. Results achieved for systems with dimensions d=2d=2 and 33 exhibit the main features of the continuous and first-order transitions in the TCP neighborhoods. We also probe the phase coexistence in the λ\lambda-diagram and the latent heat in the vicinity of the tricritical point locus.Comment: 20 pages, 11 figure

On the Integrability and Chaos of an N=2 Maxwell-Chern-Simons-Higgs Mechanical Model

We apply different integrability analysis procedures to a reduced (spatially homogeneous) mechanical system derived from an off-shell non-minimally coupled N=2 Maxwell-Chern-Simons-Higgs model that presents BPS topological vortex excitations, numerically obtained with an ansatz adopted in a special - critical coupling - parametric regime. As a counterpart of the regularity associated to the static soliton-like solution, we investigate the possibility of chaotic dynamics in the evolution of the spatially homogeneous reduced system, descendant from the full N=2 model under consideration. The originally rich content of symmetries and interactions, N=2 susy and non-minimal coupling, singles out the proposed model as an interesting framework for the investigation of the role played by (super-)symmetries and parametric domains in the triggering/control of chaotic behavior in gauge systems. After writing down effective Lagrangian and Hamiltonian functions, and establishing the corresponding canonical Hamilton equations, we apply global integrability Noether point symmetries and Painleveproperty criteria to both the general and the critical coupling regimes. As a non-integrable character is detected by the pair of analytical criteria applied, we perform suitable numerical simulations, as we seek for chaotic patterns in the system evolution. Finally, we present some Comments on the results and perspectives for further investigations and forthcoming communications.Comment: 18 pages, 5 figure

    Hybrid Neuroprosthesis for Lower Limbs

    Get PDF
Assistive technologies have been proposed for the locomotion of people with spinal cord injury (SCI). One of them is the neuroprosthesis that arouses the interest of developers and health professionals bearing in mind the beneficial effects promoted in people with SCI. Thus, the first session of this chapter presents the principles of human motility and the impact that spinal cord injury causes on a person’s mobility. The second session presents functional electrical stimulation as a solution for the immobility of paralyzed muscles. It explains the working principles of constituent modules and main stimulatory parameters. The third session introduces the concepts and characteristics of neural prosthesis hybridization. The last two sessions present and discuss examples of hybrid neuroprostheses. Such systems employ hybrid assistive lower limb strategies to evoke functional movements in people with SCI, associating the motor effects of active and/or passive orthoses to a functional electrical stimulation (FES) system. Examples of typical applications of FES in rehabilitation are discussed
