    Exploring the relationship between ethical and sustainable consumption in short supply chains: A literature review

    Get PDF
    Sustainable development, sustainable consumption and short supply chains are nowadays acquiring increasing relevance in the literature. On the other hand, from the consumer's attitudinal statement, ethical consumption is also requiring more attention from marketing sciences. Besides that, the integration of the last concept on sustainability remains in a complete lack of systematic and integrative conceptualization. This paper tries to promote a potential integration of all the dimensions of sustainable consumption and to understand the potential linkage and interaction among them, in order to promote the Sustainable Development Goal 15 from the United Nations. The methodology follows a systematic literature review and preliminary information comes from a case study of the approved project SDGsConsum. The results confirm that, besides a huge development in sustainable development and sustainable consumption in the literature, the focus on shortly supply chains of production is yet modest. Moreover, the motivations and constraints that drive and restrain, respectively, consumers toward ethical and sustainable consumption presents several incongruences.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

    Hygrothermal Effect on the Impact Response of Carbon Composites with Epoxy Resin Enhanced by Nanoclays

    This paper presents the results of the hygrothermal effect on the impact response of carbon/epoxy composites and the benefits gained from doping the epoxy resin with nanoclays previously subjected to a silane treatment appropriate for the resin. The nanoclay reinforcement increased the maximum load and the elastic recovery of the composites. The thermal degradation caused by exposure to 60°C for 10 days was insignificant, while the immersion in water at 60ºC for 30 days led to a continuous reduction in the maximum load and the elastic recovery. Multiple impacts resulted in a continuous and nearly linear degradation of the impact response both of dry and environmentally assisted specimens.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Machine-assisted Cyber Threat Analysis using Conceptual Knowledge Discovery

    Over the last years, computer networks have evolved into highly dynamic and interconnected environments, involving multiple heterogeneous devices and providing a myriad of services on top of them. This complex landscape has made it extremely difficult for security administrators to keep accurate and be effective in protecting their systems against cyber threats. In this paper, we describe our vision and scientific posture on how artificial intelligence techniques and a smart use of security knowledge may assist system administrators in better defending their networks. To that end, we put forward a research roadmap involving three complimentary axes, namely, (I) the use of FCA-based mechanisms for managing configuration vulnerabilities, (II) the exploitation of knowledge representation techniques for automated security reasoning, and (III) the design of a cyber threat intelligence mechanism as a CKDD process. Then, we describe a machine-assisted process for cyber threat analysis which provides a holistic perspective of how these three research axes are integrated together

    OBJECTIVE: Obstructive sleep apnea is frequent during the acute phase of stroke, and it is associated with poorer outcomes. A well-established relationship between supine sleep and obstructive sleep apnea severity exists in non-stroke patients. This study investigated the frequency of supine sleep and positional obstructive sleep apnea in patients with ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke. METHODS: Patients who suffered their first acute stroke, either ischemic or hemorrhagic, were subjected to a full polysomnography, including the continuous monitoring of sleep positions, during the first night after symptom onset. Obstructive sleep apnea severity was measured using the apnea-hypopnea index, and the NIHSS measured stroke severity. RESULTS: We prospectively studied 66 stroke patients. The mean age was 57.6±11.5 years, and the mean body mass index was 26.5±4.9. Obstructive sleep apnea (apnea-hypopnea index >5) was present in 78.8% of patients, and the mean apnea-hypopnea index was 29.7±26.6. The majority of subjects (66.7%) spent the entire sleep time in a supine position, and positional obstructive sleep apnea was clearly present in the other 23.1% of cases. A positive correlation was observed between the NIHSS and sleep time in the supine position (r s = 0.5;

    Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES)Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)An increase in the dental caries prevalence on root surfaces has been observed mainly in elderly. This research assessed, in vitro, the effectiveness of a pulsed CO2 (lambda = 10.6 mu m) laser associated or not with fluoride, in reducing human root dentine demineralization in conditions that mimic an oral high cariogenic challenge. After sterilization, root dentine specimens were randomly assigned into 6 groups (n = 30), in triplicate. The groups were Control (C), Streptococcus mutans (SM), Fluoride (F), Laser (L), Fluoride + laser (FL), and Laser + fluoride (LF). Except for the control group, all the specimens were inoculated with SM and immersed 3 times a day in a 40% sucrose bath. After a 7-day cariogenic challenge, the mineral loss and lesion depth were evaluated by transverse microradiography and fluoride in the biofilm was determined using an ion-selective electrode. Results were statistically analyzed by analysis of variance, at 5% of significance level. For groups C, SM, F, L, FL and LF, the means (standard-deviation) of mineral loss were 816.3 (552.5)(a), 3291.5 (1476.2)(c), 2508.5 (1240.5)(bc), 2916.2 (1323.7)(c), 1839.7 (815.2)(b) and 1955.0 (1001.4)(b), respectively; while lesion depths were 39.6 (22.8)(a), 103.1 (38.9)(c), 90.3 (44.6)(bc), 91.7 (27.0)(bc), 73.3 (26.6)(b), 75.1 (35.2)(b), respectively (different superscript letters indicate significant differences among groups). In conclusion, irradiation of root dentine with a pulsed CO2 laser at fluency of 12.0 J/cm(2) was able to inhibit root surface demineralization only when associated with fluoride. No synergy effect on the inhibition of root dentine mineral loss was provided by the combination of fluoride application and laser irradiation.20918381843Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES)Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES)Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)CNPq [201746/2007-7

    Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)Photo-disinfection of deep dentin caries lesions may be a useful tool for preserving tooth structure. However, increase of pulpal temperature higher than 5.5 degrees C may put pulp vitality in danger. Objectives: This in vitro study evaluated thermal effects of radiation of the red spectrum (lambda = 600-700 nm, 94 J cm(-2)) on pulpal and periodontal areas when irradiating deep dentin cavities in human teeth. Methods: Tooth preparation was performed at occlusal surface in 10 human teeth, which were irradiated by five different light units, four diode GaAlAs lasers: Coherent (C); Kondortech (B); Whitening lase (W); and K5000 with 2 different tips (K1 and K2), as well as one light emitting diode Laserbeam (LED). After application of toluidine blue O dye in the cavity, variation of temperature was measured in duplicate using a digital thermometer and 2 K-type thermocouples one placed inside the pulpal chamber and the other on root surface at the cementoenamel junction, simultaneously. The mean average temperature rise (Delta T) was calculated for each group. Results: Delta T values were analyzed by ANOVA and Tukey tests. Pulpal temperature increase ranged from 0.62 +/- 0.51 to 1.25 +/- 0.50 degrees C. Group C presented the highest Delta T, which was statistically significant different from B, K1, and K2. The lowest Delta T value was found for group K2, which statistically differed from the group W. No other statistically significant difference was found. At the root surface, Delta T values were lower than 0.5 degrees C for all devices and no statistically significantly difference was found among them. Conclusion: With regard to thermal side effects, the use of these red light sources operating at 94 J cm(-2) may be considered harmless for dental tissues.20614751480Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)CNPq [620160/2006-3

    The aim of this study was to select biosurfactant-producing bacterial strains from soils of plants in the semi-arid region of the state of Bahia, Brazil. The mineral salt medium (MSM) was used as base medium, changes being made in the glucose concentration, temperature, and pH during the optimization process. Two biosurfactant-producing bacterial strains were isolated from the soil of Actinocephalus sp. and belonged to the genus Pseudomonas. The emulsification indexes of these strains rose until 58%. They reduced surface and interfacial tensions of culture medium and crude oil to less than 33 mN/m and 3 mN/m, respectively. This study represented an unprecedented discovery of surfactant activity of the bacterial strains isolated from rhizospheric soils of plants from Northeast Brazilian semi-arid region.O objetivo deste estudo foi selecionar linhagens bacterianas produtoras de biossurfactante do solo rizosférico de plantas na região semiárida do estado da Bahia, Brasil.
