    The measurements of vehicle glow on the Space Shuttle

    From the combined data set of glow observations on STS-3, STS-4 and STS-5 some of the properties of the shuttle glow were observed. Comparison of the STS-3 (240 km) and STS-5 (305 km) photographs show that the intensity of the glow is about a factor of 3.5 brighter on the low altitude (STS-3) flight. The orbiter was purposely rotated about the x axis in an experiment on STS-5 to observe the dependence of the intensity on the angle of incidence between the spacecraft surface normal and the velocity vector. For a relatively large angle between the velocity vector and the surface normal there is an appreciable glow, provided the surface is not shadowed by some other spacecraft structure. As the angle becomes less the glow intensifies. The grating experiments (STS-4 photography only, STS-5 image intensifier photography) provided a preliminary low resolution spectra of the spacecraft glow.     An inwardly rectifying K^+ current is present in atrial cardiac myocytes that is activated by acetylcholine (I_{KACh}). Physiologically, activation of the current in the SA node is important in slowing the heart rate with increased parasympathetic tone. It is a paradigm for the direct regulation of signaling effectors by the Gβγ G-protein subunit. Many questions have been addressed in heterologous expression systems with less focus on the behaviour in native myocytes partly because of the technical difficulties in undertaking comparable studies in native cells. In this study, we characterise a potassium current in the atrial-derived cell line HL-1. Using an electrophysiological approach, we compare the characteristics of the potassium current with those in native atrial cells and in a HEK cell line expressing the cloned Kir3.1/3.4 channel. The potassium current recorded in HL-1 is inwardly rectifying and activated by the muscarinic agonist carbachol. Carbachol-activated currents were inhibited by pertussis toxin and tertiapin-Q. The basal current was time-dependently increased when GTP was substituted in the patch-clamp pipette by the non-hydrolysable analogue GTPγS. We compared the kinetics of current modulation in HL-1 with those of freshly isolated atrial mouse cardiomyocytes. The current activation and deactivation kinetics in HL-1 cells are comparable to those measured in atrial cardiomyocytes. Using immunofluorescence, we found GIRK4 at the membrane in HL-1 cells. Real-time RT-PCR confirms the presence of mRNA for the main G-protein subunits, as well as for M2 muscarinic and A1 adenosine receptors. The data suggest HL-1 cells are a good model to study IKAch

    From colonial categories to local culture: Evolving state practices of ethnic enumeration in Oceania, 1965-2014

    Numerous scholars have examined how governments in particular times and places have classified their populations by ethnicity, but studies that are both cross-national and longitudinal are rare. Using a unique database of census questionnaires, we examine state practices of ethnic enumeration over a 50-year period (1965–2014) in the 24 countries and areas that comprise Oceania. The region’s extraordinary linguistic and cultural diversity, combined with its complex colonial history and indigenous politics, make it an ideal site for comparative analyses. We find a shift from biological conceptions of difference to a more cultural understanding of group identity, exemplified by a sharp rise in language questions and the decline of race-based inquiries. While local identity labels have largely displaced colonial categories, the imprimatur of previous regimes still lingers, particularly in Melanesia. These shifts in official constructions of ethnoracial differences reflect a gradual lessening of colonial influences on demographic practices

    Understanding how local authorities in England address obesity: A wider determinants of health perspective

    © 2019 Elsevier B.V. Local government organisations (LAs) have a major role in the prevention and treatment of obesity in England. This study aims to 1) understand what actions are being taken by LAs to address obesity, and 2) determine how actions counter the perceived causes of obesity when mapped against the Wider Determinants of Health (WDoH) model. Thirty-two LAs were invited to complete an Action Mapping Tool, 10 participated. The tool requires LAs to document actions being implemented locally to address obesity. This then enables LAs to map their actions against the perceived causes of obesity, using the WDoH model as an analytical lens. We collated data from the 10 LAs and used an adapted framework synthesis method for analysis. 280 actions were documented across the 10 LAs; almost 60% (n = 166) targeted Individual Lifestyle Factors (ILF), with 7.1% (n = 20), 16.8% (n = 47) and 16.4% (n = 46) targeting Social and Community Factors (SCF), Living and Working Conditions (LWC) and Wider Conditions (WC) respectively. Conversely, 60% of causes were spread across the LWC and WC, with 16.4% regarded as ILF. Physical activity-, weight management-, and health improvement- programmes were most frequently implemented by LAs. There is a stark mismatch between LA actions on obesity and its perceived causes. Given that LAs acknowledge the complex aetiology of obesity, an equally comprehensive approach should be implemented in the future

    Textile antenna with simultaneous frequency and polarization reconfiguration for WBAN

    This paper proposes the design of a reconfigurable circularly polarized textile antenna. The circular polarization feature in the proposed antenna is generated by the edge-truncation of a rectangular patch and the incorporation of a slotted ground plane, whilst the frequency re-configurability feature is realized by slot size modification via the use of three embedded RF PIN diode switches. Consequently, the antenna operation can be switched between six frequencies (1.57 GHz, 1.67 GHz, 1.68 GHz, 2.43 GHz, 2.50 GHz and 2.55 GHz) depending on the seven switch configurations. The proposed antenna is validated experimentally to be operable within the WBAN, WLAN and GPS range in a compact and wearable format, with gains of up to 4.8 dBi

    A cluster-randomised feasibility trial of a children's weight management programme:the Child weigHt mANaGement for Ethnically diverse communities (CHANGE) study

    Background: Community-based programmes for children with excess weight are widely available, but few have been developed to meet the needs of culturally diverse populations. We adapted an existing children's weight management programme, focusing on Pakistani and Bangladeshi communities. We report the evaluation of this programme to assess feasibility of programme delivery, acceptability of the programme to participants from diverse communities, and feasibility of methods to inform a future trial. Methods: A cluster-randomised feasibility trial was undertaken in a large UK city. Children's weight management programmes (n = 24) were randomised to be delivered as the adapted or the standard programme (2:1 ratio). Routine data on participant attendance (n = 243) at the sessions were used to estimate the proportion of families completing the adapted and standard programmes (to indicate programme acceptability). Families planning to attend the programmes were recruited to participate in the feasibility study (n = 92). Outcome data were collected from children and parents at baseline, end of programme, and 6 months post-programme. A subsample (n = 24) of those attending the adapted programme participated in interviews to gain their views of the content and delivery and assess programme acceptability. Feasibility of programme delivery was assessed through observation and consultation with facilitators, and data on costs were collected. Results: The proportion of Pakistani and Bangladeshi families and families of all ethnicities completing the adapted programme was similar: 78.8% (95% CI 64.8-88.2%) and 76.3% (95% CI 67.0-83.6%) respectively. OR for completion of adapted vs. standard programme was 2.40 (95% CI 1.32-4.34, p = 0.004). The programme was feasible to deliver with some refinements, and participant interview data showed that the programme was well received. Study participant recruitment was successful, but attrition was high (35% at 6 months). Data collection was mostly feasible, but participant burden was high. Data collection on cost of programme delivery was feasible, but costs to families were more challenging to capture. Conclusions: This culturally adapted programme was feasible to deliver and highly acceptable to participants, with increased completion rates compared with the standard programme. Consideration should be given to a future trial to evaluate its clinical and cost-effectiveness. Trial registration: ISRCTN81798055, registered: 13/05/2014

    The Physical Activity Messaging Framework (PAMF) and Checklist (PAMC): International consensus statement and user guide

    Effective physical activity messaging plays an important role in the pathway towards changing physical activity behaviour at a population level. The Physical Activity Messaging Framework (PAMF) and Checklist (PAMC) are outputs from a recent modified Delphi study. This sought consensus from an international expert panel on how to aid the creation and evaluation of physical activity messages. In this paper, we (1) present an overview of the various concepts within the PAMF and PAMC, (2) discuss in detail how the PAMF and PAMC can be used to create physical activity messages, plan evaluation of messages, and aid understanding and categorisation of existing messages, and (3) highlight areas for future development and research. If adopted, we propose that the PAMF and PAMC could improve physical activity messaging practice by encouraging evidence-based and target population focused messages with clearly stated aims and consideration of potential working pathways. They could also enhance the physical activity messaging research base by harmonising key messaging terminologies, improving quality of reporting, and aiding collation and synthesis of the evidence
