    Location of formation of periodic solar wind number density structures is discussed. Observation of proton and alpha anticorrelation in these structures [Viall et al., 2009] indicates that taking into account that bulk velocity of aplha-particles is higher than that of proton the place of formation for these structures should be located at distance less 0.002 AU from place of observation.Comment: 6 pages, submitted in GR

    A soft robot structure with limbless resonant, stick and slip locomotion

    We present a smart robot structure that exploits anisotropic friction to achieve stick-slip locomotion. The robot is made out of three components: a plastic beam, a planar dielectric elastomer actuator and four bristle pads with asymmetric rigid metallic bristles. We show that when the robot is electronically activated at increasing frequency, its structure exploits the resonance condition to reach the maximum locomotion speed. The fundamental frequency of the structure is estimated both analytically and numerically, allowing the range of frequencies in which the top locomotion speed was observed during the experiments to be identified. The locomotion speed of the robot as a function of the actuation frequency is estimated with a frequency response analysis performed on a discretised model of the structure, revealing good agreement with the experimental evidence

Giving compelling evidence suggesting a protective effect associated with the efferent auditory system, the goal of our study was to characterize the age-related changes in the number of efferent medial olivocochlear (MOC) synapses regulating outer hair cell (OHC) activity compared with the number of afferent inner hair cell ribbon synapses in CBA/J mice over their lifespan. Methods: Organs of Corti of 3-month-old CBA/J mice were compared with mice aged between 10 and 20 months, grouped at 2-month intervals. For each animal, one ear was used to characterize the synapses between the efferent MOC fibers and the outer hair cells (OHCs), while the contralateral ear was used to analyze the ribbon synapses between inner hair cells (IHCs) and type I afferent nerve fibers of spiral ganglion neurons (SGNs). Each cochlea was separated in apical, middle, and basal turns, respectively. Results: The first significant age-related decline in afferent IHC-SGN ribbon synapses was observed in the basal cochlear turn at 14 months, the middle turn at 16 months, and the apical turn at 18 months of age. In contrast, efferent MOC-OHC synapses in CBA/J mice exhibited a less pronounced loss due to aging which only became significant in the basal and middle turns of the cochlea by 20 months of age. Discussion: This study illustrates an age-related reduction on efferent MOC innervation of OHCs in CBA/J mice starting at 20 months of age. Our findings indicate that the morphological decline of efferent MOC-OHC synapses due to aging occurs notably later than the decline observed in afferent IHC-SGN ribbon synapses

    A hallmark of the conserved ATM/ATR signalling is its ability to mediate a wide range of functions utilizing only a limited number of adaptors and effector kinases. During meiosis, Tel1 and Mec1, the budding yeast ATM and ATR, respectively, rely on a meiotic adaptor protein Hop1, a 53BP1/Rad9 functional analog, and its associated kinase Mek1, a CHK2/Rad53-paralog, to mediate multiple functions: control of the formation and repair of programmed meiotic DNA double strand breaks, enforcement of inter-homolog bias, regulation of meiotic progression, and implementation of checkpoint responses. Here, we present evidence that the multi-functionality of the Tel1/Mec1-to-Hop1/Mek1 signalling depends on stepwise activation of Mek1 that is mediated by Tel1/Mec1 phosphorylation of two specific residues within Hop1: phosphorylation at the threonine 318 (T318) ensures the transient basal level Mek1 activation required for viable spore formation during unperturbed meiosis. Phosphorylation at the serine 298 (S298) promotes stable Hop1-Mek1 interaction on chromosomes following the initial phospho-T318 mediated Mek1 recruitment. In the absence of Dmc1, the phospho-S298 also promotes Mek1 hyper-activation necessary for implementing meiotic checkpoint arrest. Taking these observations together, we propose that the Hop1 phospho-T318 and phospho-S298 constitute key components of the Tel1/Mec1- based meiotic recombination surveillance (MRS) network and facilitate effective coupling of meiotic recombination and progression during both unperturbed and challenged meiosis

    Self-perceived competence correlates poorly with objectively measured competence in Evidence Based Medicine among medical students

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Previous studies report various degrees of agreement between self-perceived competence and objectively measured competence in medical students. There is still a paucity of evidence on how the two correlate in the field of Evidence Based Medicine (EBM). We undertook a cross-sectional study to evaluate the self-perceived competence in EBM of senior medical students in Malaysia, and assessed its correlation to their objectively measured competence in EBM.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We recruited a group of medical students in their final six months of training between March and August 2006. The students were receiving a clinically-integrated EBM training program within their curriculum. We evaluated the students' self-perceived competence in two EBM domains ("searching for evidence" and "appraising the evidence") by piloting a questionnaire containing 16 relevant items, and objectively assessed their competence in EBM using an adapted version of the Fresno test, a validated tool. We correlated the matching components between our questionnaire and the Fresno test using Pearson's product-moment correlation.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Forty-five out of 72 students in the cohort (62.5%) participated by completing the questionnaire and the adapted Fresno test concurrently. In general, our students perceived themselves as moderately competent in most items of the questionnaire. They rated themselves on average 6.34 out of 10 (63.4%) in "searching" and 44.41 out of 57 (77.9%) in "appraising". They scored on average 26.15 out of 60 (43.6%) in the "searching" domain and 57.02 out of 116 (49.2%) in the "appraising" domain in the Fresno test. The correlations between the students' self-rating and their performance in the Fresno test were poor in both the "searching" domain (r = 0.13, p = 0.4) and the "appraising" domain (r = 0.24, p = 0.1).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>This study provides supporting evidence that at the undergraduate level, self-perceived competence in EBM, as measured using our questionnaire, does not correlate well with objectively assessed EBM competence measured using the adapted Fresno test.</p> <p>Study registration</p> <p>International Medical University, Malaysia, research ID: IMU 110/06</p

    Evaluation of the aqueous extract of Boswellia dalzielii stem bark for antimicrobial activities and gastrointestinal effects

    The aqueous extract of Boswelli dalzielii Hutch (family: Burseraceae) was investigated for therapeutic properties using aspirin-induced ulceration in rats, gastrointestinal motility in mice and castor oil-induced diarrhoea in rats. The median lethal dose (LD50) of the extract was carried out via the oral route in mice. Antimicrobial and preliminary phytochemical screening of the extract was also investigated. The extract did not show toxicity signs or death at doses O.O5) protection against castor oil-induced diarrhoea in rats. No antimicrobial effects were shown by the extract (200 mg/kg) against any of the tested organisms. Tannins were detected in the aqueous extract. The above results show that B. dalzielii stem bark probably contains some active ingredients that could be developed for such gastrointestinal problems as have been claimed by traditional medical practitioners.     High Impact of Pediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease on Caregivers' Work Productivity and Daily Activities: An International Prospective Study

    To evaluate the longitudinal evolution of work productivity loss and activity impairment in caregivers of children with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). We also evaluated the associations between these impairments, IBD-related factors, and caregivers’ health-related quality of life (HRQOL) and estimated the indirect costs related to work absenteeism. Study design Since January 2017, children with newly diagnosed IBD were enrolled prospectively in the Pediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease Network for Safety, Efficacy, Treatment and Quality improvement of care study. The impact of pediatric-onset IBD on caregivers' socioeconomic functioning (work and daily activities) and HRQOL was assessed using the Work Productivity and Activity Impairment for caregivers questionnaire and the European Quality of Life Five Dimension Five Level questionnaire, at diagnosis and 3 and 12 months of age. Generalized estimating equation models were applied to evaluate outcomes longitudinally, adjusted for IBD type, disease activity, and child's age at diagnosis. Results Up to July 2021, 491 children with IBD were eligible for analysis of caregivers' Work Productivity and Activity Impairment questionnaire. At diagnosis, the mean caregivers' employment rate was 78.4%; the adjusted mean work productivity loss was 44.6% (95% CI, 40.2%-49.0%), and the adjusted mean activity impairment was 34.3% (95% CI, 30.8%-37.7%). Work productivity loss and activity impairment significantly decreased over time and were associated with disease activity, but not with IBD type or child's age. Caregivers' HRQOL was associated with both impairments. Costs related to work absenteeism were at least €6272 ($7276) per patient during the first year after diagnosis. Conclusions Caregivers of children with IBD experience significant impairments in work and daily activities, especially at diagnosis. The impact decreases thereafter and is associated with disease activity and caregivers’ HRQOL. Work absenteeism results in high indirect costs
