Tensions between the appearance data of T2K and NOvA
The long baseline neutrino experiments, T2K and NOvA, have taken significant
amount of data in each of the four channels: (a) disappearance, (b)
disappearance (c) appearance and (d)
appearance. There is a mild tension between the disappearance and the
appearance data sets of T2K. A more serious tension exists between the
appearance data of T2K and the appearance data of NOvA.
This tension is significant enough that T2K rules out the best-fit point of
NOvA at confidence level whereas NOvA rules out T2K best-fit point at
confidence level. We explain the reason why these tensions arise. We
also do a combined fit of T2K and NOvA data and comment on the results of this
fit.Comment: matches the published versio
Recumbent syncope mimicking nocturnal seizures
A fifty seven year old man presented to the emergency at the University hospital with a 3 month history of episodes of arousals from sleep with groaning and deviation of head to his right side. These were followed by a period of “confusion” that lasted for a “couple of minutes”. He had a witnessed “convulsion” in the hospital during this last visit and was loaded with one gram of phenytoin. A computed tomography (CT) scan of the head three months ago was reported as normal. Neurology was consulted for further investigations and long-term managemen
Strategi United Sabah Islamic Association (Usia) Dalam Mengembangkan Dakwah Di Kota Kinabalu Malaysia
Synthesis and Applications of a New Polysiloxane-Immobilized Macrocyclic Ligand System
Insoluble porous solid, macrocyclic 22-membered ring, 1-oxa-6,9,12,15,18-pentaaza-2,22-disilacyclododocosane polysiloxane ligand system has been prepared by the reaction of a macro-silane agent with tetraethylorthosilicate. The macro-silane agent was prepared by the reaction of imino-bis(N-2-aminoethylacetamide) ligand with 3-iodopropyltrimethoxysilane in 1:3 molar ratio. The new prepared polysiloxane system exhibits variable potentials for the extraction of metal ions (Fe3+, Co2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, Zn2+, Ag+, Cd2+, Hg2+, and Pb2+) from aqueous solutions. The ligand system shows high capacity to extract silver, lead, and mercury. Chemisorption of the metal ions by the ligand system at the optimum conditions was found in the order Ag + > Pb2+ > Hg2+ > Cu2+ > Ni2+ > Fe3+ > Co2+ > Cd2+ > Zn2+
Anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis with neurologic sequelae refractory to conservative therapy with complete response to adjuvant therapy
© 2020 The Authors Background: Anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor encephalitis has been described in increasing frequency in association with benign, mature ovarian teratoma. Affected patients typically present with paraneoplastic limbic encephalitis with flu-like symptoms followed by altered mental status, acute psychiatric symptoms, seizures and amnesia. These symptoms can rapidly progressive if not treated aggressively with surgical resection. Profound neurological symptoms may require immunotherapy. Case: We present a case of anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis associated with a malignant immature teratoma in which symptoms were refractory to surgical management and initial immunotherapy. A complete neurologic response was only seen after initiating adjuvant chemotherapy. Conclusion: Anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis has rarely been described with immature ovarian teratomas. In these cases, a complete response may not be observed until systemic chemotherapy is started
Matter vs Vacuum oscillations in Atmospheric Neutrinos
Atmospheric neutrinos travel very long distances through earth matter. It is
expected that the matter effects lead to significant changes in the neutrino
survival and oscillation probabilities. Initial analysis of atmospheric
neutrino data by the Super- Kamiokande collaboration is done using the vacuum
oscillation hypothesis, which provided a good fit to the data. In this work, we
did a study to differentiate the effects of vacuum oscillations and matter
modified oscillations in the atmospheric neutrino data. We find that magnetized
iron detector, ICAL at INO, can make a 3 sigma discrimination between vacuum
oscillations and matter oscillations, for both normal and inverted hierarchies,
in ten years.Comment: Accepted for publication in Nucl. Phys.
Melting of the Chhota Shigri Glacier, Western Himalaya, Insensitive to Anthropogenic Emission Residues: Insights From Geochemical Evidence
Himalayan glaciers are invariably covered by supra-glacial debris. Of these glaciers, the Chhota Shigri Glacier (CSG) in the western Himalaya has minimal debris cover (3.4%), yet has a comparable melt rate to other Himalayan glaciers. Utilizing osmium isotopic composition, and major and trace element geochemistry of cryoconite, a dark colored aggregate of mineral and organic materials on the surface of the ablation zone of the CSG, we show that the surface of CSG is essentially free of anthropogenically emitted particles, contrary to many previous findings. Given this and the overall lack of debris, we conclude that the high melt rate of CSG is primarily related to the increase of the Earth's near-surface temperature linked directly to global warming. Therefore, the future meltwater supply for glacial-fed rivers originating from Lahaul and Spiti region would be most vulnerable for >50 million population living downstream and requires immediate attention
