Latino Politicians, Activists, and Parents: The Challenge of Implementing City-Suburban Magnet Schools

    Get PDF
This socio-political analysis focuses on various coalition members’ roles in the design and implementation of the Learning Corridor, a $126 million complex of four interdistrict magnet schools, located in the predominantly Puerto Rican south side of Hartford, Connecticut. Drawing upon historical and qualitative research methods, it examines how different Latino politicians, activists, and parents viewed the original purpose of the magnet school project -- and how they continue to address conflicts that have arisen during the past five years of implementation. In addition to archival analysis of ten years of documents and statistics, the study draws upon twenty-nine semi-structured interviews with key advocates. Major findings reveal how city-suburban magnet schools have been a two-edged blade for Hartford’s Latino residents, resulting in important tangible and symbolic gains for some, but diluting benefits that were originally slated for Hartford’s neighborhood youth

Why I Purchase What I See On Facebook: Comparing The Impact of Electronic Word-of-Mouth Between Hispanic And Non-Hispanic Consumers

    Get PDF
This study aims to explore the role of the adoption and consumption of Facebook on Electronic Word-Of-Mouth (eWOM) among Hispanics versus African Americans, Asians, and Non-Hispanics Whites in the United States, whilst exploring the impact of attitudes towards eWOM on the likelihood to purchase something because of the “Likes” on Facebook. A national panel was used to collect the data and an ANOVA test was conducted to test the hypotheses. The results indicated Non-Hispanic White consumers were significantly less likely to use WOM than Hispanic, African Americans and Asians. Overall, Hispanics were found to be more likely than any other any group to practice eWOM, yet the difference is only significant when compared to Non-Hispanic whites. Finally, as predicted, the impact of attitudes toward eWOM on purchase behavior was the highest among Hispanics than any other group

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES).The present study has as its main focus the rare earth elements (REE) that occur in important concentrations in the Pedra Branca granite massif, located in the eastern part of the Goiás Tin Province, more precisely in the Paranã Tin Subprovince. The massive has important tin deposits and consists of metaluminous to peraluminous A-type granites, aged between 1740 and 1769 Ma. The Faixa Placha is the most important tin deposit of the Pedra Branca Massif and presents high concentrations of REEY in the parental granite, in the greisenized granites and in the tin ore. The values are above 1000 ppm in LREE and reach 500 ppm in HREEY. The minerals with REE in the parental granite are allanite, monazite, xenotime, thorite, apatite and zircon. These minerals except zircon, are altered, giving rise to secondary monazite, REE- silicates, REE-fluorcarbonates and REE-oxyfluorides, which are responsible for the concentration of REE in greisenized granites and greisens and the availability of these metals to the clay fraction of soils and saprolite. Ion exchange analyses on saprolite and soil in a weathering profile of Faixa Placha, show that the extraction from the clay fraction are more enriched in REEY in relation to the extraction from whole rock, with values between 3425 and 36762 ppm and between 2804 and 21689 ppm respectively. The REE are more enriched in the basal part of the profile, especially the LREEs. Both the REEY concentrations and mineral compositions suggest an important economic potential of the Faixa Placha deposit for recovery of REE as by-product of tin mining. In addition, the exchangeable REEY concentrations in the weathering profile indicate the potential of the Faixa Placha and nearby areas to constitute an important REEY deposit of the ion-adsorption-type

O modelo de regressão obtido permite a estimativa do sexo nos casos onde se disponha de TC e crânio de indivíduos desaparecidosAbstract: Anthropometry has always intrigued humans, Egyptian and Greek civilizations already observed and studied the relationship of the various parts of the body. Thus, anthropology studies the human being under the cultural and physical aspect, has in its forensic aspect the purpose of serving as an auxiliary method in the study of identity under the physical criterion. In the pursuit of individual identification, the first step is to estimate sex. In this study, we sought to relate cranial CT measurements and cranial volume in dry bones with sex. The dried skulls and CT scans belong to the FOP / UNICAMP Osteological and Tomographic Biobank consisting of 112 male CT and 87 female CT, all with known age, ancestry and cause of death. Measurement was made with OnDemand3D® software and measurements: Glabela-Metalambda; Bregma-Basio and Eurio-Eurio. To determine the cranial volume was used soybean seeds filling the whole cavity. After statistical analysis using the IBM® SPSS® 25 Statistics software, it was found that all the measures evaluated are dimorphic, and it is possible to elaborate a logistic regression model named SEX 2019 = [-18,087+ (5,937xVC) + (- 0,076x ( Br-Ba))]. It was observed that the method used results in 80.4% sensitivity, 66.7% specificity and 74.4% accuracy, showing to be effective in predicting sex. The regression model obtained allows the estimation of sex in cases where CT and skull of missing individuals are availableMestradoGestão e Saúde ColetivaMestra em Gestão e Saúde Coletiv

    Get PDF
The use of distillers' dried yeast as inoculum for rum fermentations was studied on a pilot plant scale. Two fermentation procedures (batch and fed batch) and four levels of dry yeast (0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 g/L) were tested. The fermentations were followed for 36 hours. Product yields at 24 hours and 36 hours were determined. The resultant fermentation rate was below the rate required by the local industry (close to completion after 30 hours). This drawback is further complicated by the fact that dried yeast is not stable and has a shelf life that can vary from 1 to 12 months, depending on ambient storage conditions.
