    Phenological Monitoring of Paddy Crop Using Time Series MODIS Data

    Rice is an important staple food crop worldwide, especially in India. Accurate and timely prediction of rice phenology plays a significant role in the management of water resources, administrative planning, and food security. In addition to conventional methods, remotely sensed time series data can provide the necessary estimation of rice phenological stages over a large region. Thus, the present study utilizes the 16-day composite Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) product with a spatial resolution of 250 m from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) to monitor the rice phenological stages over Karur district of Tamil Nadu, India, using the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform. The rice fields in the study area were classified using the machine learning algorithm in GEE. The ground truth was obtained from the paddy fields during crop production which was used for classifying the paddy grown area. After the classification of paddy fields, local maxima, and local minima present in each pixel of time series, the EVI product was used to determine the paddy growing stages in the study area. The results show that in the initial stage the pixel value of EVI in the paddy field shows local minima (0.23), whereas local maxima (0.41) were obtained during the peak vegetative stage. The results derived from the present study using MODIS data were cross-validated using the field data

    Identifying inflammation-related targets of natural lactones using network pharmacology, molecular modeling and <i>in vitro</i> approaches

    Natural lactones have been used in traditional and folklore medicine for centuries owing to their anti-inflammatory properties. The study uses a multifaceted approach to identify lead anti-inflammatory lactones from the SISTEMATX natural products database. The study analyzed the natural lactone database, revealing 18 lactones linked to inflammation targets. The primary targets were PTGES, PTGS1, COX-2, ALOX5 and IL1B. STX 12273 was the best hit, with the lowest binding energy and potential for inhibiting the COX-2 enzyme. The study suggested natural lactone, STX 12273, from the SISTEMATX database with anti-inflammatory potential and postulated its use for inflammation treatment or prevention.     SARS-CoV-2 and Influenza Virus Co-Infection Cases Identified through ILI/SARI Sentinel Surveillance: A Pan-India Report

    SARS-CoV-2/influenza virus co-infection studies have focused on hospitalized patients who usually had grave sequelae. Here, we report SARS-CoV-2/influenza virus co-infection cases from both community and hospital settings reported through integrated ILI/SARI (Influenza Like Illness/Severe Acute Respiratory Infection) sentinel surveillance established by the Indian Council of Medical Research. We describe the disease progression and outcomes in these cases. Out of 13,467 samples tested from 4 July 2021&ndash;31 January 2022, only 5 (0.04%) were of SARS-CoV-2/influenza virus co-infection from 3 different sites in distinct geographic regions. Of these, three patients with extremes of age required hospital admission, but none required ICU admission or mechanical ventilation. No mortality was reported. The other two co-infection cases from community settings were managed at home. This is the first report on SARS-CoV-2/Influenza virus co-infection from community as well as hospital settings in India and shows that influenza viruses are circulating in the community even during COVID-19. The results emphasize the need for continuous surveillance for multiple respiratory pathogens for effective public health management of ILI/SARI cases in line with the WHO (World Health Organization) recommendations

    Unveiling the healing properties of 2,3-dehydrosilychristin: a potential silymarin-derived flavonolignan from <i>Vitex negundo</i>

    The compound 2,3-dehydrosilychristin, a flavonolignan linked to silychristin and silymarin, remains intriguing due to its challenging isolation from silymarin. While silymarin has been the exclusive source of flavonolignans – silybin, silychristin and silydianin − 2,3-dehydrosilychristin is reported in this study from Vitex negundo Linn. leaves. 2,3-Dehydrosilychristin (7) and 14 other compounds were isolated through focused extraction. Its subsequent pharmacological evaluation demonstrated potent antioxidant and in-vitro anti-inflammatory effects, notably inhibiting cytokines TNF-α, IL-6, IL-8 and VEGF. In in-vivo assessments, 2,3-dehydrosilychristin (7) revealed remarkable hepatoprotective potential by reducing liver enzyme levels AST and ALT. These findings expand the potential of 2,3-dehydrosilychristin and suggest bioprospecting Vitex species as alternate sources of bioactive flavonolignans.</p
