Emission-Line Galaxy Surveys as Probes of the Spatial Distribution of Dwarf Galaxies. I. The University of Michigan Survey
Objective-prism surveys which select galaxies on the basis of line-emission
are extremely effective at detecting low-luminosity galaxies and constitute
some of the deepest available samples of dwarfs. In this study, we confirm that
emission-line galaxies (ELGs) in the University of Michigan (UM)
objective-prism survey (MacAlpine et al. 1977-1981) are reliable tracers of
large-scale structure, and utilize the depth of the samples to examine the
spatial distribution of low-luminosity (M -18.0) dwarfs relative to
higher luminosity giant galaxies (M -18.0) in the Updated Zwicky
Catalogue (Falco et al. 1999). New spectroscopic data are presented for 26 UM
survey objects. We analyze the relative clustering properties of the overall
starbursting ELG and normal galaxy populations, using nearest neighbor and
correlation function statistics. This allows us to determine whether the
activity in ELGs is primarily caused by gravitational interactions. We conclude
that galaxy-galaxy encounters are not the sole cause of activity in ELGs since
ELGs tend to be more isolated and are more often found in the voids when
compared to their normal galaxy counterparts. Furthermore, statistical analyses
performed on low-luminosity dwarf ELGs show that the dwarfs are less clustered
when compared to their non-active giant neighbors. The UM dwarf samples have
greater percentages of nearest neighbor separations at large values and lower
correlation function amplitudes relative to the UZC giant galaxy samples. These

Fracture Propagation Driven by Fluid Outflow from a Low-permeability Aquifer
Deep saline aquifers are promising geological reservoirs for CO2
sequestration if they do not leak. The absence of leakage is provided by the
caprock integrity. However, CO2 injection operations may change the
geomechanical stresses and cause fracturing of the caprock. We present a model
for the propagation of a fracture in the caprock driven by the outflow of fluid
from a low-permeability aquifer. We show that to describe the fracture
propagation, it is necessary to solve the pressure diffusion problem in the
aquifer. We solve the problem numerically for the two-dimensional domain and
show that, after a relatively short time, the solution is close to that of
one-dimensional problem, which can be solved analytically. We use the relations
derived in the hydraulic fracture literature to relate the the width of the
fracture to its length and the flux into it, which allows us to obtain an
analytical expression for the fracture length as a function of time. Using
these results we predict the propagation of a hypothetical fracture at the In
Salah CO2 injection site to be as fast as a typical hydraulic fracture. We also
show that the hydrostatic and geostatic effects cause the increase of the
driving force for the fracture propagation and, therefore, our solution serves
as an estimate from below. Numerical estimates show that if a fracture appears,
it is likely that it will become a pathway for CO2 leakage.Comment: 21 page
Radio and optical intra-day variability observations of five blazars
We carried out a pilot campaign of radio and optical band intra-day
variability (IDV) observations of five blazars (3C66A, S5 0716+714, OJ287,
B0925+504, and BL Lacertae) on December 18--21, 2015 by using the radio
telescope in Effelsberg (Germany) and several optical telescopes in Asia,
Europe, and America. After calibration, the light curves from both 5 GHz radio
band and the optical R band were obtained, although the data were not smoothly
sampled over the sampling period of about four days. We tentatively analyse the
amplitudes and time scales of the variabilities, and any possible periodicity.
The blazars vary significantly in the radio (except 3C66A and BL Lacertae with
only marginal variations) and optical bands on intra- and inter-day time
scales, and the source B0925+504 exhibits a strong quasi-periodic radio
variability. No significant correlation between the radio- and optical-band
variability appears in the five sources, which we attribute to the radio IDV
being dominated by interstellar scintillation whereas the optical variability
comes from the source itself. However, the radio- and optical-band variations
appear to be weakly correlated in some sources and should be investigated based

Ionization disequilibrium in K- and L-shell ions
Producción CientíficaTime-gated Sc K-shell and Ge L-shell spectra are presented from a range of characterized thermodynamic states spanning ion densities of 1e19-1e20cm-3 and plasma temperatures around 2000eV. For the higher densities studied and temperatures from 1000 to 3000 eV, the Sc and Ge x-ray emission spectra are consistent with steady-state calculations from the modern atomic kinetics model SCRAM. At the lower ion densities achieved through plasma expansion, however, the model calculations require a higher plasma temperature to reproduce the observed Ge spectrum. We attribute this to ionization disequilibrium of the Sc because the ionization time scales exceed the hydrodynamic timescale when the inferred temperatures diverge.This work has been supported by the Research Grant No. PID2019-108764RB-I00 from the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation
Dynamics of Barred Galaxies
Some 30% of disc galaxies have a pronounced central bar feature in the disc
plane and many more have weaker features of a similar kind. Kinematic data
indicate that the bar constitutes a major non-axisymmetric component of the
mass distribution and that the bar pattern tumbles rapidly about the axis
normal to the disc plane. The observed motions are consistent with material
within the bar streaming along highly elongated orbits aligned with the
rotating major axis. A barred galaxy may also contain a spheroidal bulge at its
centre, spirals in the outer disc and, less commonly, other features such as a
ring or lens. Mild asymmetries in both the light and kinematics are quite
common. We review the main problems presented by these complicated dynamical
systems and summarize the effort so far made towards their solution,

The Outer Disks of Early-Type Galaxies. I. Surface-Brightness Profiles of Barred Galaxies
We present a study of 66 barred, early-type (S0-Sb) disk galaxies, focused on
the disk surface brightness profile outside the bar region and the nature of
Freeman Type I and II profiles, their origins, and their possible relation to
disk truncations. This paper discusses the data and their reduction, outlines
our classification system, and presents -band profiles and classifications
for all galaxies in the sample.
The profiles are derived from a variety of different sources, including the
Sloan Digital Sky Survey (Data Release 5). For about half of the galaxies, we
have profiles derived from more than one telescope; this allows us to check the
stability and repeatability of our profile extraction and classification. The
vast majority of the profiles are reliable down to levels of mu_R ~ 27 mag
arcsec^-2; in exceptional cases, we can trace profiles down to mu_R > 28. We
can typically follow disk profiles out to at least 1.5 times the traditional
optical radius R_25; for some galaxies, we find light extending to ~ 3 R_25.
We classify the profiles into three main groups: Type I (single-exponential),
Type II (down-bending), and Type III (up-bending). The frequencies of these
types are approximately 27%, 42%, and 24%, respectively, plus another 6% which
are combinations of Types II and III. We further classify Type II profiles by
where the break falls in relation to the bar length, and in terms of the
postulated mechanisms for breaks at large radii ("classical trunction" of star
formation versus the influence of the Outer Lindblad Resonance of the bar). We
also classify the Type III profiles by the probable morphology of the outer

Political brand image: an investigation into the operationalisation of the external orientation of David Cameron’s Conservative brand
This paper seeks to address the limited understanding of how to operationalise the external brand image of a political brand. More specifically, this research critically assesses the transfer potential of the six variables of brand image by Bosch, Venter, Han and Boshoff to deconstruct the UK Conservative Party brand from the perspective of young people aged 18–24 years during the 2010 UK General Election campaign. This research demonstrates the applicability of the six variables otherwise known as the ‘brand image framework’ to the political environment. However, the application of the brand image framework in its original conceptualisation proved problematic. Many of the brand image variables were clarified, rearticulated and simplified to address the political context. This refined conceptualisation provided an in-depth understanding of how to investigate the political brand image of David Cameron’s Conservative Party. This study addresses the paucity of research that operationalises external brand image and provides practitioners and academics within and beyond the context of political branding a mechanism to understand the external orientation of brands. This research may also be used by political and non-political brands as a basis to explore external brand image and compare its consistency with internal brand identity
