Implementation of the CRPA model in the GENIE event generator and analysis of nuclear effects in low-energy transfer neutrino-nucleus interactions

We present the implementation and validation of the Hartree-Fock continuum random phase approximation (HF-CRPA) model in the GENIE neutrino-nucleus interaction event generator and a comparison of the subsequent predictions to experimental measurements of lepton kinematics from interactions with no mesons in the final state. These predictions are also compared to those of other models available in GENIE. It is shown that, with respect to these models, HF-CRPA predicts a significantly different evolution of the cross section when moving between different interaction targets, when considering incoming anti-neutrinos compared to neutrinos and when changing neutrino energies. These differences are most apparent for interactions with low energy and momentum transfer. It is also clear that the impact of nucleon correlations within the HF-CRPA framework is very different than in GENIE's standard implementation of RPA corrections. Since many neutrino oscillation experiments rely on their input model to extrapolate between targets, flavours, and neutrino energies, the newly implemented HF-CRPA model provides a useful means to verify that such differences between models are appropriately covered in oscillation analysis systematic error budgets.Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures. Two of the most well known historical landslide occurrences are analyzed and their temporal evolution is presented. The sites of Panagopoula and Karya are often referred as the most representative cases of long term ground displacements based on inclinometer monitoring data. Regarding these cases, the heavy rainfalls constitute the main controlling (triggering) factor, while flysch is the critical landslide-prone formation which significantly contributes to landsliding. The inclinometer data through a long time period were analyzed and typical movement diagrams were compiled. A simple statistical model including data normalization through several active stages (phases) of movement is used to identify the common kinematic features as well as to estimate the velocity trend type of movement

Uncertainties on the νμ\nu_{\mu}/νe\nu_{e}, νˉμ\bar{\nu}_{\mu}/νˉe\bar{\nu}_{e} and νe\nu_{e}/νˉe\bar{\nu}_{e} cross-section ratio from the modelling of nuclear effects and their impact on neutrino oscillation experiments

Recent studies have demonstrated non-trivial behaviours in the cross-section extrapolation from νμ\nu_{\mu} (νˉμ\bar{\nu}_{\mu}) to νe\nu_{e} (νˉe\bar{\nu}_{e}) interactions on nuclear targets in the charged-current quasi-elastic (CCQE) regime. In this article, the potential for mis-modeling of νμ\nu_{\mu}/νe\nu_{e}, νˉμ\bar{\nu}_{\mu}/νˉe\bar{\nu}_{e} and νe\nu_{e}/νˉe\bar{\nu}_{e} cross-section ratios due to nuclear effects is quantified by considering the model spread within the full kinematic phase space for CCQE interactions. Its impact is then propagated to a simulated experimental configuration based on the Hyper-K experiment, which is dominated by CCQE interactions. Although a relatively large discrepancy between theoretical models is confirmed for forward lepton angles at neutrino energies below 300 MeV and for a new region of phase space at lepton angles above 100100^{\circ}, both regions are demonstrated to contribute a very small portion of the Hyper-K (or T2K) flux integrated cross section. Overall, a systematic uncertainty on the oscillated flux-averaged νe\nu_{e}/νˉe\bar{\nu}_{e} cross-section ratio is estimated to be \sim2%. A similar study was also conducted for the proposed lower-energy ESSν\nuSB experiment configuration, where the resulting uncertainty was found to be larger.Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures. Further evidence for asymptotic safety of quantum gravity

    Get PDF
The asymptotic safety conjecture is examined for quantum gravity in four dimensions. Using the renormalisation group, we find evidence for an interacting UV fixed point for polynomial actions up to the 34th power in the Ricci scalar. The extrapolation to infinite polynomial order is given, and the self-consistency of the fixed point is established using a bootstrap test. All details of our analysis are provided. We also clarify further aspects such as stability, convergence, the role of boundary conditions, and a partial degeneracy of eigenvalues. Within this setting we find strong support for the conjecture

Comparing methods to combine functional loss and mortality in clinical trials for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis

Objective: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) clinical trials based on single end points only partially capture the full treatment effect when both function and mortality are affected, and may falsely dismiss efficacious drugs as futile. We aimed to investigate the statistical properties of several strategies for the simultaneous analysis of function and mortality in ALS clinical trials. Methods: Based on the Pooled Resource Open-Access ALS Clinical Trials (PRO-ACT) database, we simulated longitudinal patterns of functional decline, defined by the revised amyotrophic lateral sclerosis functional rating scale (ALSFRS-R) and conditional survival time. Different treatment scenarios with varying effect sizes were simulated with follow-up ranging from 12 to 18 months. We considered the following analytical strategies: 1) Cox model; 2) linear mixed effects (LME) model; 3) omnibus test based on Cox and LME models; 4) composite time-to-6-point decrease or death; 5) combined assessment of function and survival (CAFS); and 6) test based on joint modeling framework. For each analytical strategy, we calculated the empirical power and sample size. Results: Both Cox and LME models have increased false-negative rates when treatment exclusively affects either function or survival. The joint model has superior power compared to other strategies. The composite end point increases false-negative rates among all treatment scenarios. To detect a 15% reduction in ALSFRS-R decline and 34% decline in hazard with 80% power after 18 months, the Cox model requires 524 patients, the LME model 794 patients, the omnibus test 526 patients, the composite end poi

BACKGROUND: There is limited information on use of laser in complex percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI). We examined the impact of laser on the outcomes of balloon uncrossable and balloon undilatable chronic total occlusion (CTO) PCI. METHODS: We reviewed baseline clinical and angiographic characteristics and procedural outcomes of 4845 CTO PCIs performed between 2012 and 2020 at 32 centers. RESULTS: Of the 4845 CTO lesions, 752 (15.5%) were balloon uncrossable (523 cases) or balloon undilatable (356 cases) and were included in this analysis. Mean patient age was 66.9 ± 10 years and 83% were men. Laser was used in 20.3% of the lesions. Compared with cases in which laser was not used, laser was more commonly used in longer length occlusions (33 [21, 50] vs. 25 [15, 40] mm, p = 0.0004) and in-stent restenotic lesions (41% vs. 20%, p \u3c 0.0001). Laser use was associated with higher technical (91.5% vs. 83.1%, p = 0.010) and procedural (88.9% vs. 81.6%, p = 0.033) success rates and similar incidence of major adverse cardiac events (3.92% vs. 3.51%, p = 0.805). Laser use was associated with longer procedural (169 [109, 231] vs. 130 [87, 199], p \u3c 0.0001) and fluoroscopy time (64 [40, 94] vs. 50 [31, 81], p = 0.003). CONCLUSIONS: In a contemporary, multicenter registry balloon uncrossable and balloon undilatable lesions represented 15.5% of all CTO PCIs. Laser was used in approximately one-fifth of these cases and was associated with high technical and procedural success and similar major complication rates

Percutaneous coronary intervention of chronic total occlusions involving a bifurcation: Insights from the PROGRESS-CTO registry

    Get PDF
BACKGROUND: The impact of bifurcations at the proximal or distal cap on the outcomes of chronic total occlusion (CTO) percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) has received limited study. METHODS: We analyzed the clinical, angiographic, and procedural data of 4,584 cases performed in patients between 2012 and 2020 in a global CTO PCI registry. We compared 4 groups according to the bifurcation location: proximal cap, distal cap, proximal and distal cap, and no bifurcation. RESULTS: The CTO involved a bifurcation in 67% cases, as follows: proximal cap (n = 1451, 33%), distal cap (n = 622, 14%), or both caps (n = 954, 21%). Proximal and distal cap cases had higher J-CTO compared with proximal cap, distal cap, and no bifurcation cases (2.9 ± 1.1 vs 2.5 ± 1.1 vs 2.4 ± 1.2 vs 2.0 ± 1.2, P \u3c 0.0001), and they were also associated with a lower technical success rate (79% vs 85% vs 85% vs 90%, P \u3c 0.0001), higher pericardiocentesis rate (1% vs 1% vs 0.2% vs 0.3%, P = 0.02), and higher emergency coronary artery bypass graft surgery rate (0.3% vs 0% vs 0% vs 0%, P = 0.01). CONCLUSION: More than two-thirds of CTO PCIs involve a bifurcation, which is associated with lower technical success and higher risk of complications
