    The Customer Relationship Management Paradox: Five Steps to Create a Fairer Organization

    Purpose: Favoritism of customers reveals great benefits, as focusing on the most profitable customers ensures better use of marketing resources. Scholars suggest, however, that such favoritism imposes a danger to customer management, potentially creating perceptions of discrimination. We explore the fairness of differential customer management practices and propose a framework contributing to fairer marketing practices with implications for social businesses. Approach: We critically review the literatures on perceptions of fairness and evaluate the customer relationship management (CRM) paradox. Findings: Within our framework, we identify four stages towards fairer customer management practices: (1) generating awareness and diagnosing problems, (2) managing targeted and non-targeted customers, (3) creating emphasis on positive inferences and goodwill, and (4) promoting morality in marketing. Implications: This framework assists firms in incorporating fairness issues in their marketing schemes, improving the well being of both customers and society alike. With increased fairness, all stakeholders will benefit, and it encourages more 'compassionate management.' Contribution: This paper critically reviews related literatures to suggest best practices for overcoming these dangers in a framework involving four phases, and presents an action program comprised of five steps for practitioners to practice fairer customer management

    DC to DC USB-C Charger

    The DC House USB-C Charger will convert the 48V input from the DC house, found on the Cal Poly campus, to 3 USB-C outputs: 5V, 12V, and 24 volts. The converter will deliver a total of 185 Watts out across all 3 outputs, with an efficiency greater than 82% at full load. The USB-C ports will be used to connect to compatible phones, laptops or any other device for charging/powering purposes. The goal of this project is to develop the most efficient and safe converter to deliver power to multiple outputs using USB-C, for items as small as a cell phone to the size of a mini fridge. Currently, the DC house does not contain this USB-C feature. USB-C is the connector type that technological companies are using more and more within their new products. With this said, it is necessary to design and implement this charging capability to the DC house. Once implemented, this project will assist in having the house up to date with the most current technological advancements

    Built Environment and Preterm Birth

    Background. Preterm birth affects approximately 500,000 babies a year in the United States. One out of nine babies born in the United States deliver before 37 weeks gestation. Preterm birth can cause lifelong neurological problems, cerebral palsy, vision and hearing impairments, and developmental delay. The estimated $26 billion a year in preterm birth related costs are staggering to the health care system. Preterm-related causes of death in 2008 together accounted for 35% of all infant deaths. Methods. This paper is a review of the literature published (2006-2012) on the relationship between neighborhood environment and preterm birth. Results. Neighborhood deprivation and the neighborhood environment were associated with low-birth weight and preterm birth. Examples of neighborhood deprivation include economic deprivation, social disorder, and lack of health resources. Neighborhood environment can be described as neighborhood physical deterioration, violent crime, and group density. Conclusions. A significant association exists between the neighborhood environment and birth outcomes. More research is needed to explore interventions with a systems approach to promote healthy maternal behavior, reduce stress, and improve care for expecting mothers living in stressful neighborhood environments in order to reduce preterm births

    The Effect of Mock Code Blue Simulations and Dedicated Advanced Cardiac Life Support Didactics on Resident Perceived Competency.

    In-hospital cardiac or pulmonary arrest is associated with high mortality. In the USA, approximately 200,000 of these events occur and are associated with overall survival rates of 18%-20%. Despite advances in resuscitative methods, the probability of intact survival also remains unfavorable. Though many factors play a role, we believe a large portion of a patient\u27s survival is dependent on the competency of the leader of the code blue or resuscitative team\u27s efforts. Newly minted physicians who enter medical training in their respective residencies are equipped with a wide range of clinical competency in regards to hands-on experience and aptitude with handling code blue scenarios. Through the use of mock code blue simulations along with dedicated didactics over a seven-month time span, we were able to demonstrate success in improving clinical competency and patient survival outcomes

    Neratinib protects pancreatic beta cells in diabetes

    The loss of functional insulin-producing β-cells is a hallmark of diabetes. Mammalian sterile 20-like kinase 1 (MST1) is a key regulator of pancreatic β-cell death and dysfunction; its deficiency restores functional β-cells and normoglycemia. The identification of MST1 inhibitors represents a promising approach for a β-cell-protective diabetes therapy. Here, we identify neratinib, an FDA-approved drug targeting HER2/EGFR dual kinases, as a potent MST1 inhibitor, which improves β-cell survival under multiple diabetogenic conditions in human islets and INS-1E cells. In a pre-clinical study, neratinib attenuates hyperglycemia and improves β-cell function, survival and β-cell mass in type 1 (streptozotocin) and type 2 (obese Leprdb/db) diabetic mouse models. In summary, neratinib is a previously unrecognized inhibitor of MST1 and represents a potential β-cell-protective drug with proof-of-concept in vitro in human islets and in vivo in rodent models of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes

    Mobile app-based symptom-rhythm correlation assessment in patients with persistent atrial fibrillation

    Background: The assessment of symptom-rhythm correlation (SRC) in patients with persistent atrial fibrillation (AF) is challenging. Therefore, we performed a novel mobile app-based approach to assess SRC in persistent AF.Methods: Consecutive persistent AF patients planned for electrical cardioversion (ECV) used a mobile app to record a 60-s photoplethysmogram (PPG) and report symptoms once daily and in case of symptoms for four weeks prior and three weeks after ECV. Within each patient, SRC was quantified by the SRC-index defined as the sum of symptomatic AF recordings and asymptomatic non-AF recordings divided by the sum of all recordings.Results: Of 88 patients (33% women, age 68 +/- 9 years) included, 78% reported any symptoms during recordings. The overall SRC-index was 0.61 (0.44-0.79). The study population was divided into SRC-index tertiles: low (= 0.73). Patients within the low (vs high) SRC-index tertile had more often heart failure and diabetes mellitus (both 24.1% vs 6.9%). Extrasystoles occurred in 19% of all symptomatic non-AF PPG recordings. Within each patient, PPG recordings with the highest (vs lowest) tertile of pulse rates conferred an increased risk for symptomatic AF recordings (odds ratio [OR] 1.26, 95% coincidence interval [CI] 1.04-1.52) and symptomatic non-AF recordings (OR 2.93, 95% CI 2.16-3.97). Pulse variability was not associated with reported symptoms.Conclusions: In patients with persistent AF, SRC is relatively low. Pulse rate is the main determinant of reported symptoms. Further studies are required to verify whether integrating mobile app-based SRC assessment in current workflows can improve AF management
