    Simultaneous estimation of the nutritional contribution of fish meal, soy protein isolate and corn gluten to the growth of Pacific white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) using dual stable isotope analysis

    The nutritional contribution of the dietary nitrogen, carbon and total dry matter supplied by fish meal (FM), soy protein isolate (SP) and corn gluten (CG) to the growth of Pacific white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei was assessed by means of isotopic analyses. As SP and CG are ingredients derived from plants having different photosynthetic pathways which imprint specific carbon isotope values to plant tissues, their isotopic values were contrasting. FM is isotopically different to these plant meals in regards to both, carbon and nitrogen. Such natural isotopic differences were used to design experimental diets having contrasting isotopic signatures. Seven isoproteic (36% crude protein), isoenergetic (4.7 Kcal gr-1) diets were formulated; three diets consisted in isotopic controls manufactured with only one main ingredient supplying dietary nitrogen and carbon: 100 % FM (diet 100F), 100% SP (diet 100S) and 100% CG (diet 100G). Four more diets were formulated with varying mixtures of these three ingredients, one included 33% of each ingredient on a dietary nitrogen basis (diet 33FSG) and the other three included a proportion 50:25:25 for each of the three ingredients (diets 50FSG, 50SGF and 50GFS). At the end of the bioassay there were no significant differences in growth rate in shrimps fed on the four mixed diets and diet 100F (k = 0.215-0.224). Growth rates were significantly lower (k = 0.163-0.201) in shrimps grown on diets containing only plant meals. Carbon and nitrogen stable isotope values (δ13C and δ15N) were measured in experimental diets and shrimp muscle tissue and results were incorporated into a three-source, two-isotope mixing model. The relative contributions of dietary nitrogen, carbon and total dry matter from FM, SP and CG to growth were statistically similar to the proportions established in most of the diets after correcting for the apparent digestibility coefficients of the ingredients. Dietary nitrogen available in diet 33FSG was incorporated in muscle tissue at proportions representing 24, 35 and 41% of the respective ingredients. Diet 50GSF contributed significantly higher amounts of dietary nitrogen from CG than from FM. When the level of dietary nitrogen derived from FM was increased in diet 50FSG, nutrient contributions were more comparable to the available dietary proportions as there was an incorporation of 44, 29 and 27% from FM, SP and CG, respectively. Nutritional contributions from SP were very consistent to the dietary proportions established in the experimental diets

    Comparing the assimilation of dietary nitrogen supplied by animal-, plant- and microbial-derived ingredients in Pacific white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei: A stable isotope study

    In order to become a more profitable and sustainable industry, the aquaculture sector is constantly exploring alternative nutrient sources. In the present study, the natural stable isotope signatures of different animal-, plantand microbial-derived ingredients were determined to evaluate the assimilation of dietary nitrogen in Pacific white shrimp. Experimental diets were manufactured to replace fish meal and squid meal with microbial- and plant- derived ingredients (48 and 66 % dietary inclusion) and were also used as additives (4%). Ingredients were also used as additives to study their effects on growth performance and assimilation. Corn gluten, soy protein isolate, Arthrospira (Spirulina) biomass and a bacterial meal (ProFloc™) were used to formulate six, isotopic control diets containing one source of dietary nitrogen, while six combined diets had varying proportions of ingredients. At the end of the trial, survival rates were similar among treatments (88 ± 9%) but there were significant differences in mean final weight. Microbial and animal proteins promoted similar final weight when combined (1080−1537 mg), while plant ingredients and Arthrospira caused lower growth when used alone (420−970 mg). Isotopic values indicated significant differences in the assimilation proportions of dietary nitrogen, mainly attributed to the ingredients’ different amino acid profiles. The dietary nitrogen contained in microbial-derived ingredients was assimilated at similar, or even higher proportions than fish meal and squid meal. Diet formulated with 33 % fish meal, Arthrospira and corn gluten, contributed 31, 36 and 33 % of dietary nitrogen to muscle growth, respectively. The second 33 % combination supplied 42, 34 and 24 % from squid meal, bacterial meal and soy protein. When ingredients were used at 4%, additive levels, they also contributed structural nitrogen to shrimp muscle tissue despite low dietary inclusions.     Evaluating the efficacy of commercially available aflatoxin binders for decreasing the effects of aflatoxicosis on Pacific white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei

    Feeding aflatoxin-contaminated diets to shrimp juveniles reduces feed intake and growth rate, suppresses the immune system, causes hepatic lesions, and, in some cases, decreases survival rates. There is scarce information on the effectiveness of commercially available aflatoxin binders to reduce aflatoxicosis in shrimp. Goals. We investigated the effect of corn that was naturally contaminated with aflatoxins on the growth performance and nitrogen retention efficiency of white shrimp juveniles L. vannamei and the potential of three commercially available anti-aflatoxin additives. Methods. 20 tanks (60L) were stocked with 10 shrimp weighing 210±4mg. Tanks were divided into five treatments with four replicates each. Shrimp were fed twice daily with either the contaminated diet (75 ?g kg1 total aflatoxins), the contaminated diet supplemented with 2 g kg-1 Aflabalan®, 2 g kg-1 Mycosorb®, and 2.5 g kg-1 Mycoflix plus®, or the uncontaminated diet to the control group for 42 days. Results. In terms of the diet containing aflatoxin without binding agents, the consumption, growth rate, and nitrogen-retention efficiency were significantly lower than the control treatment. The experimental diets did not affect the feed conversion ratio or survival rates in any treatment. The inclusion of any of the aflatoxin binders evaluated in the present study did not produce growth rates comparable to those of shrimp fed the uncontaminated diet. Conclusions. Aflatoxins decreased growth performance in a population of white shrimp juveniles L. vannamei. Although all the aflatoxin binders evaluated in this study caused an improvement, they were not effective in reversing all the negative effects caused by feeding aflatoxin-contaminated diets to white shrimp juveniles L. vannamei

    El Vocabulario de la Sociedad Civil, la Ruralidad y los Movimientos Sociales en América Latina tiene como objetivo desarrollar vocablos relacionados con temas de gran trascendencia para la vida colectiva de la población Latinoamericana; pretende introducir a estudiantes, personas del ámbito académico y activistas en la comprensión de estas categorías de análisis. A través de la mirada de 70 especialistas que participaron en este vocabulario, es posible comprender muchos de los términos que se utilizan dentro de la investigación social y áreas relacionadas con las ciencias políticas, ambientales y rurales, a partir de una mayor explicación y detalle. Es por ello que se inserta este trabajo desde una mirada colectiva y amplia de los conceptos que se exponen. En este libro podrá encontrar las ideas de varios autores y autoras de distintas universidades, con una visión multi, inter y transdisciplinaria. El esfuerzo que se realizó para conjuntar varios términos y analizar su compleja red de interpretaciones, permitirá que este manuscrito pueda ser consultado por estudiantes, personas del ámbito científico-académico, y ciudadanía; porque contiene el estado del arte, la historia del paulatino avance de múltiples conceptos y su vigencia en el contexto actual

    The James Webb Space Telescope Mission

    Twenty-six years ago a small committee report, building on earlier studies, expounded a compelling and poetic vision for the future of astronomy, calling for an infrared-optimized space telescope with an aperture of at least 4m4m. With the support of their governments in the US, Europe, and Canada, 20,000 people realized that vision as the 6.5m6.5m James Webb Space Telescope. A generation of astronomers will celebrate their accomplishments for the life of the mission, potentially as long as 20 years, and beyond. This report and the scientific discoveries that follow are extended thank-you notes to the 20,000 team members. The telescope is working perfectly, with much better image quality than expected. In this and accompanying papers, we give a brief history, describe the observatory, outline its objectives and current observing program, and discuss the inventions and people who made it possible.     Assimilation of dietary nitrogen supplied by fish meal and microalgal biomass from Spirulina (Arthrospira platensis) and Nannochloropsis oculata in shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei fed compound diets

    The biomass of several microalgae species represents one of many single cell-derived products with great potential as dietary ingredients for the aquaculture feed industry. The present study compares the assimilation of dietary nitrogen and total dry matter supplied by fish meal and biomass from Spirulina (Arthrospira platensis) and Nannochloropsis oculata in postlarval Pacific white shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei. The natural isotopic signatures of the ingredients were used as biomarkers to assess their respective nutritional contributions. Three control diets were manufactured with each of the main ingredients to establish shrimps’ isotopic control values (initial mean weight 51 mg). Four mixed diets were formulated with varying proportions of ingredients on a dietary nitrogen basis (33:33:33 and permutated 50:25:25 proportions). Diets were supplied ad libitum four times daily for 22 days. Shrimp reared under most dietary treatments showed high growth rates. Final mean weight was significantly higher (268 ± 64 mg) in shrimp grown under diets containing only fish meal and those formulated with 50% fish meal (239 ± 64 mg) and 50% Spirulina (234 ± 57 mg). Isotopic assessments of ingredients and shrimp indicated significantly different nutrient assimilations. A higher incorporation of dietary nitrogen (43 to 52%) and dietary carbon (44 to 57%) from Spirulina was observed, while N. oculata and fish meal supplied lower proportions of dietary nitrogen to shrimp growth (4 to 33% and 25 to 51%, respectively).     Promoted Hexagonal Tungsten Bronzes as Selective Catalysts in the Aerobic Transformation of Alcohols: Glycerol and Methanol

    M-containing tungsten oxides bronzes (M = Ti, Nb or V) with hexagonal tungsten bronze (HTB) structure have been investigated as catalysts for the aerobic transformation of glycerol and methanol. The catalysts were prepared hydrothermally and characterized by several physico chemical techniques, i.e. N2-adsorption, XRD, Raman spectroscopy and temperature programmed desorption of ammonia. Interesting variations in the thermal stability of the HTB-framework were observed according to the element introduced into the oxide structure. In addition, the incorporation of Ti and Nb modified the acid features of the hexagonal tungsten oxides, whereas V introduced new redox sites. The catalytic results for the aerobic transformation of glycerol and methanol in terms of conversion and nature of reaction products are discussed on the basis of the physico-chemical characteristics of catalysts

    Biodiversity 2016. Status and Trends of Colombian Continental Biodiversity

    This third volume of the annual report on biodiversity in Colombia continues the editorial line that begun in 2014. Using novel analytical and graphic proposals, these reports have the goal of communicating the contents to a broad public, making it available for discussion without sacrificing the quality of information. The challenge of communication continues to be a major part of the institutional project, and the new languages with which we are learning to communicate with society and other institutions are an experiment that we expect to be increasingly gratifying. The report for 2017 is already under construction and it counts on new digital technologies so the power of a colombian vital connection may be entirely expressed. The included content evidences that we are still far away from having a systematic follow-up about most of the topics related to the management of biodiversity and ecosystem services, which is the only way to evaluate the effectiveness of policies and investments made by society. In fact, a limitation that is recognized is that of identifying positive or negative changes that affect different levels of organization of life on this planet; therefore, our global navigation route of the Aichi targets is still to be verified. An additional purpose of this process includes the invitation of all Colombians to contribute in constructing and maintaining basic monitoring indicators for management since it is impossible to identify long-term trends of flora and fauna in the country without the support of institutions, researchers, and citizens. This challenge is immense in a megadiverse country such as Colombia. For this reason, the report will continue to open its pages to experts, and even indigenous peoples or local communities, for them to present their perspectives about environmental change and its effects on biodiversity in a systematic and documented manner. This has the objective of stimulating the commitment of everyone in the management of biodiversity and ecosystem services. The only way of overcoming the risk of extinction is through the active process of social learning in which all sectors assume a part of the complex responsibility in protecting the forms of life of the country, a roughly counted tenth of all creatures on Earth. I thank all the people that contributed in this Report, those who have supported us in the phases of production, and all readers and users, who are the ultimate judges of its utility.Bogotá, D. C
