    Risk of acquired drug resistance during short-course directly observed treatment of tuberculosis in an area with high levels of drug resistance.

    BACKGROUND: Data on the performance of standardized short-course directly observed treatment (DOTS) of tuberculosis (TB) in areas with high levels of drug resistance and on the potential impact of DOTS on amplification of resistance are limited. Therefore, we analyzed treatment results from a cross-sectional sample of patients with TB enrolled in a DOTS program in an area with high levels of drug resistance in Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan in Central Asia. METHODS: Sputum samples for testing for susceptibility to 5 first-line drugs and for molecular typing were obtained from patients starting treatment in 8 districts. Patients with sputum smear results positive for TB at the end of the intensive phase of treatment and/or at 2 months into the continuation phase were tested again. RESULTS. Among 382 patients with diagnoses of TB, 62 did not respond well to treatment and were found to be infected with an identical Mycobacterium tuberculosis strain when tested again; 19 of these patients had strains that developed new or additional drug resistance. Amplification occurred in only 1.2% of patients with initially susceptible or monoresistant TB strains, but it occurred in 17% of those with polyresistant strains (but not multidrug-resistant strains, defined as strains with resistance to at least isoniazid and rifampicin) and in 7% of those with multidrug-resistant strains at diagnosis. Overall, 3.5% of the patients not initially infected with multidrug-resistant TB strains developed such strains during treatment. Amplification of resistance, however, was found only in polyresistant Beijing genotype strains. CONCLUSIONS: High levels of amplification of drug resistance demonstrated under well-established DOTS program conditions reinforce the need for implementation of DOTS-Plus for multidrug-resistant TB in areas with high levels of drug resistance. The strong association of Beijing genotype and amplification in situations of preexisting resistance is striking and may underlie the strong association between this genotype and drug resistance

    Amplified Sediment waves in the Irish Sea (AmSedIS)

    Exceptionally high, straight-crested and trochoidal sediment waves have recently been observed on shelf seas world-wide, and reach heights of up to 36 m in the Irish Sea. It is uncertain how the interplay between geological, biogeochemical and hydrodynamic processes influences the migration and extreme growth of these sediment waves. The AmSedIS project thus sets out to (1) investigate the role of sediment granulometry and sedimentavailability on both “extreme” and “normal” sediment wave development and (2) investigate the potential association of methane derived carbonate formation with extreme sediment wave growth. The preliminary findings are: (1) The crests of unusually high and trochoidal sediment waves still migrate over several meters per year and they consist of coarser, more poorly sorted sediments in comparison to the "normal" sediments waves; (2) Methane seepage is not considered a factor in extreme sediment wave development; (3) The excess of mobile sediment supply seems to allow for "extreme" sediment wave growth, and is linked to palaeo-tunnel valleys and the finer sediments that fill them or with converging sediment transport pathways; (4) The variation in sediment from sediment wave trough to crest to trough will form the basis for more advanced numerical modelling

    Kondo Effects and Multipolar Order in the cubic PrTr2Al20 (Tr=Ti, V)

    Our single crystal study reveals that PrTr2Al20 (Tr = Ti and V) provides the first examples of a cubic {\Gamma}3 nonmagnetic ground doublet system that shows the Kondo effect including a -ln T dependent resistivity. The {\Gamma}3 quadrupolar moments in PrV2Al20 induce anomalous metallic behavior through hybridization with conduction electrons, such as T^{1/2} dependent resistivity and susceptibility below ~ 20 K down to its ordering temperature T_O = 0.6 K. In PrTi2Al20, however, quadrupoles are well-localized and exhibit an order at T_O = 2.0 K. Stronger Kondo coupling in PrV2Al20 than in PrTi2Al20 suppresses quadrupolar ordering, and instead promotes hybridization between the {\Gamma}3 doublet and conduction electrons, leading to most likely the quadrupolar Kondo effect.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figure

    Due to a rise in the endemic level of Salmonella Typhimurium infections in humans in Funen county, an outbreak of this serotype was discovered in the first week of September 1996. During the outbreak period (28 August - 14 October 1996) approximately 170 culture confirmed cases were registered at Statens Serum Institut. Almost all isolates were of phage type 12, which is frequently found in pork in Denmark - about 60% of S. Typhimurium isolates from pork are of DT 12 (Anon., 1997)

    Superconductivity in the Ferroquadrupolar State in the Quadrupolar Kondo Lattice PrTi2_2Al20_{20}

    The cubic compound PrTi2_2Al20_{20} is a quadrupolar Kondo lattice system that exhibits quadrupolar ordering due to the non-Kramers Γ3\Gamma_3 ground doublet and has strong hybridization between 4f4f and conduction electrons. Our study using high-purity single crystal reveals that PrTi2_2Al20_{20} exhibits type-II superconductivity at Tc=200T_{\rm c} = 200 mK in the nonmagnetic ferroquadrupolar state. The superconducting critical temperature and field phase diagram suggests moderately enhanced effective mass of m/m016m^*/m_0 \sim 16

    5CM, NO IRON SSC DIPOLE 12M MODEL CRYOSTAT THERMAL PERFORMANCE*

    ABSTRACT A 12 m long model of a 5 cm case dipole cryostat has been constructed and its thermal performance measured. The model utilized heat intercepted fiberglass reinforced plastic posts to support the 12 m long, 4.5 K cold mass and the 10 and 80 K thermal shields. A superinsulation blanket system utilizing aluminized polyester with fiberglass mat spacing material was developed and installed on the 10 and 80 K thermal shields. The heat gain to 4.5, 10 and 80 K was measured. We have compared the results with the analytical predicted performance and it shows good agreement. The performance of the multilayer insulation system has been measured under several different system conditions and the results are reported
