Generation of entangled states and error protection from adiabatic avoided level crossings
We consider the environment-affected dynamics of self-interacting
particles living in one-dimensional double wells. Two topics are dealt with.
First, we consider the production of entangled states of two-level systems. We
show that by adiabatically varying the well biases we may dynamically generate
maximally entangled states, starting from initially unentangled product states.
Entanglement degradation due to a common type of environmental influence is
then computed by solving a master equation. However, we also demonstrate that
entanglement production is unaffected if the system-environment coupling is of
the type that induces ``motional narrowing''. As our second but related topic,
we construct a different master equation that seamlessly merges error
protection/detection dynamics for quantum information with the environmental
couplings responsible for producing the errors in the first place. Adiabatic

Expanding urbanization in estuaries and the increase in pollutants from anthropogenic point sources can affect nearby benthic assemblages. Using a paired impact-control design, we assessed the effects of pollution from anthropogenic point sources (marinas, storm-water drains, sewage outfalls and fish farms) on algal and sessile invertebrate recruits to pavers placed in an industrialized Tasmanian estuary. Species number and cover of native recruits were lower after 12 months at sites outside marinas relative to paired control sites, whereas non-native and cryptogenic recruits were significantly higher outside marinas and near sewage outfalls. The cover of fast-growing, opportunistic species was significantly higher at sites near fish farms and sewage outfalls, and the cover of native species was also greater at sites near sewage outfalls relative to the paired control sites. Our results suggest an increased management focus on controlling pollution from marinas and sewage outfalls is warranted to limit the spread of non-native and cryptogenic species

Sperm DNA methylation mediates the association of male age on reproductive outcomes among couples undergoing infertility treatment
Parental age at time of offspring conception is increasing in developed countries. Advanced male age is associated with decreased reproductive success and increased risk of adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes in offspring. Mechanisms for these male age effects remain unclear, but changes in sperm DNA methylation over time is one potential explanation. We assessed genome-wide methylation of sperm DNA from 47 semen samples collected from male participants of couples seeking infertility treatment. We report that higher male age was associated with lower likelihood of fertilization and live birth, and poor embryo development (p \u3c 0.05). Furthermore, our multivariable linear models showed male age was associated with alterations in sperm methylation at 1698 CpGs and 1146 regions (q \u3c 0.05), which were associated with \u3e 750 genes enriched in embryonic development, behavior and neurodevelopment among others. High dimensional mediation analyses identified four genes (DEFB126, TPI1P3, PLCH2 and DLGAP2) with age-related sperm differential methylation that accounted for 64% (95% CI 0.42–0.86%; p \u3c 0.05) of the effect of male age on lower fertilization rate. Our findings from this modest IVF population provide evidence for sperm methylation as a mechanism of age-induced poor reproductive outcomes and identifies possible candidate genes for mediating these effects
Updating Interconnection Screens for PV System Integration
This white paper evaluates the origins and usefulness of the capacity penetration screen, offer short-term solutions which could effectively allow fast-track interconnection to many PV system applications, and considers longer-term solutions for increasing PV deployment levels in a safe and reliable manner while reducing or eliminating the emphasis on the penetration screen. Short-term and longer-term alternatives approaches are offered as examples; however, specific modifications to screening procedures should be discussed with stakeholders and must ultimately be adopted by state and federal regulatory bodies
A 2.3-Day Periodic Variability in the Apparently Single Wolf-Rayet Star WR 134: Collapsed Companion or Rotational Modulation?
We present the results of an intensive campaign of spectroscopic and
photometric monitoring of the peculiar Wolf-Rayet star WR 134 from 1989 to
1997.
This unprecedentedly large data set allows us to confirm unambiguously the
existence of a coherent 2.25 +/- 0.05 day periodicity in the line-profile
changes of He II 4686, although the global pattern of variability is different
from one epoch to another. This period is only marginally detected in the
photometric data set. Assuming the 2.25 day periodic variability to be induced
by orbital motion of a collapsed companion, we develop a simple model aiming at
investigating (i) the effect of this strongly ionizing, accreting companion on
the Wolf-Rayet wind structure, and (ii) the expected emergent X-ray luminosity.
We argue that the predicted and observed X-ray fluxes can only be matched if
the accretion on the collapsed star is significantly inhibited. Additionally,
we performed simulations of line-profile variations caused by the orbital
revolution of a localized, strongly ionized wind cavity surrounding the X-ray
source. A reasonable fit is achieved between the observed and modeled
phase-dependent line profiles of He II 4686. However, the derived size of the
photoionized zone substantially exceeds our expectations, given the observed
low-level X-ray flux. Alternatively, we explore rotational modulation of a
persistent, largely anisotropic outflow as the origin of the observed cyclical
variability. Although qualitative, this hypothesis leads to greater consistency

Gonadal sex patterns p21-induced cellular senescence in mouse and human glioblastoma
Males exhibit higher incidence and worse prognosis for the majority of cancers, including glioblastoma (GBM). Disparate survival may be related to sex-biased responses to treatment, including radiation. Using a mouse model of GBM, we show that female cells are more sensitive to radiation, and that senescence represents a major component of the radiation therapeutic response in both sexes. Correlation analyses revealed that the CDK inhibitor p21 and irradiation induced senescence were differentially regulated between male and female cells. Indeed, female cellular senescence was more sensitive to changes in p21 levels, a finding that was observed in wildtype and transformed murine astrocytes, as well as patient-derived GBM cell lines. Using a novel Four Core Genotypes model of GBM, we further show that sex differences in p21-induced senescence are patterned during early development by gonadal sex. These data provide a rationale for the further study of sex differences in radiation response and how senescence might be enhanced for radiation sensitization. The determination that p21 and gonadal sex are required for sex differences in radiation response will serve as a foundation for these future mechanistic studies
