    Variations in fathers' discourse on fatherhood and in family alliances during infancy

    The aim of this pilot study is to analyse the discourse of fathers of toddlers concerning fatherhood and the link between some particularities in the discourse and family alliance. The sample consists of 13 Swiss first time fathers (5 fathers of girls and 8 of boys). In order to evaluate the paternal discourse, the fathers were given a semistructured interview, which was later analysed using the research package Alceste. The family alliance, i.e., the degree of coordination among the partners when executing a task together, was assessed through the Lausanne Trilogue Play (Fivaz-Depeursinge & Corboz-Warnery, 1999). The main results indicated an interesting link between classes of paternal discourse grouped around the following themes "affective relationship”, "daily routine” and "educational goals”, and the family alliance (defined in two major categories; functional and problematic alliances).     Permeability of a bubble assembly: From the very dry to the wet limit

    We measure the permeability of a fluidized bed of monodispersed bubbles with soap solution characteristic of mobile and non-mobile interfaces. These experimental data extend the permeability curves previously published for foam in the dry limit. In the wet limit, these data join the permeability curves of a hard sphere suspension at porosity equal to 0.4 and 0.6 in the cases of mobile and non-mobile interfaces respectively. We show that the model of permeability proposed by Kozeny and Carman and originally validated for packed beds of spheres (with porosity around 0.4) can be successfully applied with no adjustable parameters to liquid fractions from 0.001 up to 0.85 for systems made of monodisperse and deformable entities with non-mobile interfaces

To date, several Drosophila brain templates and digital atlases have been built to automatically analyze and compare collections of expression pattern images. However, there has been no systematic comparison of performances between alternative atlasing strategies and registration algorithms. Here, we objectively evaluated the performance of different strategies for building adult Drosophila brain templates and atlases. In addition, we used state-of-the-art registration algorithms to generate a new group-wise inter-sex atlas. Our results highlight the benefit of statistical atlases over individual ones and show that the newly proposed inter-sex atlas outperformed existing solutions for automated registration and annotation of expression patterns. Over 3,000 images from the Janelia Farm FlyLight collection were registered using the proposed strategy. These registered expression patterns can be searched and compared with a new version of the BrainBaseWeb system and BrainGazer software. We illustrate the validity of our methodology and brain atlas with registration-based predictions of expression patterns in a subset of clock neurons.     Ki-67: level of evidence and methodological considerations for its role in the clinical management of breast cancer: analytical and critical review

    Clinicians can use biomarkers to guide therapeutic decisions in estrogen receptor positive (ER+) breast cancer. One such biomarker is cellular proliferation as evaluated by Ki-67. This biomarker has been extensively studied and is easily assayed by histopathologists but it is not currently accepted as a standard. This review focuses on its prognostic and predictive value, and on methodological considerations for its measurement and the cut-points used for treatment decision. Data describing study design, patients’ characteristics, methods used and results were extracted from papers published between January 1990 and July 2010. In addition, the studies were assessed using the REMARK tool. Ki-67 is an independent prognostic factor for disease-free survival (HR 1.05–1.72) in multivariate analyses studies using samples from randomized clinical trials with secondary central analysis of the biomarker. The level of evidence (LOE) was judged to be I-B with the recently revised definition of Simon. However, standardization of the techniques and scoring methods are needed for the integration of this biomarker in everyday practice. Ki-67 was not found to be predictive for long-term follow-up after chemotherapy. Nevertheless, high KI-67 was found to be associated with immediate pathological complete response in the neoadjuvant setting, with an LOE of II-B. The REMARK score improved over time (with a range of 6–13/20 vs. 10–18/20, before and after 2005, respectively). KI-67 could be considered as a prognostic biomarker for therapeutic decision. It is assessed with a simple assay that could be standardized. However, international guidelines are needed for routine clinical use

    Wigner matrix formalism for phase-modulated signals

    International audienceLaser beam can carry multi-scales properties in space and time that impact the beam quality. The study of their evolution along complex optical sequences is of crucial interest, particularly in high intensity laser chains. For such analysis, results obtained with standard numerical calculus are strongly dependent of the sampling. In this paper, we develop an analytic model for a sinusoidal phase modulation inside a sequence of first order optics elements based on the Wigner matrix formalism. A Bessel decomposition of the Wigner function gives pseudo-Wigner functions that obey to the general ABCD matrix law transformation without approximations and sampling considerations. Applied to a Gaussian beam, explicit expressions are obtained for the projections of the Wigner function in the sub-spaces and gives a powerful tool for laser beam analysis. The formalism is established in the spatial and temporal domain and can be used to evaluate the impact of the phase noise to the beam properties and is not limited to small modulation depths. In a sake of illustration, the model is applied to the Talbot effect with the analysis of the propagation in the spatial and phase-space domain. A comparison with full numerical calculations evidences the high accuracy of the analytic model that retrieves all the features of the diffracted beam

    Transport of coarse particles in liquid foams: coupling of confinement and buoyancy effect

    International audienceWe investigate the behavior of coarse particles confined in foam channels during drainage. Results are reported for particle velocities measured at both microscopic (single foam channel) and macroscopic (foam) scales, as a function of the average velocity of the liquid flow and of the confinement parameter that is the ratio of particle diameter to the maximal particle diameter within channel cross-section. Thanks to numerical simulations, we show that velocities measured for small values of the confinement parameter cannot be understood with the commonly assumed theory for liquid flow in foam channels. Instead, better agreement is obtained by taking into account the characteristics of the flow in the films/ channel transitional areas. Finally, values for longitudinal dispersion coefficients are reported, emphasizing effects of buoyancy on particles motions

    Foam clogging

    International audienceTo what extent are aqueous foams prone to clogging? Foam permeability is measured as a function of particulate loading (trapped hydrophilic particles) under conditions where the particle to bubble size ratio is allowed to increase when the number of particles per bubble is fixed. In addition to experiments performed on the foam scale, we investigated experimentally and numerically the hydrodynamic resistance of a single foam node loaded with one particle. It is shown that, with respect to solid porous media, aqueous foams clog more efficiently due to two reasons: (i) the deformation of interfaces allows for larger particles to be incorporated within the interstitial network and (ii) the interfacial mobility contributes to lowering of the reduced permeability
