    A client-server framework for the design of geo-location based augmented reality applications

    We present a client-server framework for the development of mobile applications that use Augmented Reality (AR) to visualize geolocated data. Geo-information displays allow users to understand and respond effectively to the context in which the application is deployed. We provide a scalable and flexible architecture for the development and management of the client, the server and the data that are used by the applications. This architecture is based on the display of connected layers that represent structured information. The approach has been implemented in two case studies: the management of failures in electrical power lines, and to support hydrogeological monitoring

    Implementation of a Coin Recognition System for Mobile Devices with Deep Learning

    This paper examines the application of a deep learning approach to automatic coin recognition, via a mobile device and client-server architecture. We show that a convolutional neural network is effective for coin identification. During the training phase, we determine the optimum size of the training dataset necessary to achieve high classification accuracy with low variance. In addition, we propose a client-server architecture that enables a user to identify coins by photographing it with a smartphone. The image provided by the user is matched with the neural network on a remote server. A high correlation suggests that the image is a match. The application is a first step towards the automatic identification of coins and may help coin experts in their study of coins and reduce the associated expense of numismatic applications

    TreeSketchNet: From Sketch To 3D Tree Parameters Generation

    3D modeling of non-linear objects from stylized sketches is a challenge even for experts in Computer Graphics (CG). The extrapolation of objects parameters from a stylized sketch is a very complex and cumbersome task. In the present study, we propose a broker system that mediates between the modeler and the 3D modelling software and can transform a stylized sketch of a tree into a complete 3D model. The input sketches do not need to be accurate or detailed, and only need to represent a rudimentary outline of the tree that the modeler wishes to 3D-model. Our approach is based on a well-defined Deep Neural Network (DNN) architecture, we called TreeSketchNet (TSN), based on convolutions and able to generate Weber and Penn parameters that can be interpreted by the modelling software to generate a 3D model of a tree starting from a simple sketch. The training dataset consists of Synthetically-Generated \revision{(SG)} sketches that are associated with Weber-Penn parameters generated by a dedicated Blender modelling software add-on. The accuracy of the proposed method is demonstrated by testing the TSN with both synthetic and hand-made sketches. Finally, we provide a qualitative analysis of our results, by evaluating the coherence of the predicted parameters with several distinguishing features

    BoidVR: An Agent Simulation Environment Based on Freehand and Virtual Reality

    Freehand-based Interaction Techniques (FITs) are an emerging technology of importance for effective Virtual Reality (VR). In this regard, most modern Head Mounted Displays (HMDs), such as the Oculus Quest, are equipped with inside-out cameras for egocentric hand tracking and natural hand gestures recognition. Following this technological evolution, we have developed an agent-based modeling and simulation VR application, called BoidVR, focused on freehand-based interaction with simulated agents. Our system enables users to view and interact with both the agents and the virtual environment using FIT-based tools. We illustrate a number of specific gestures that allow users to manipulate the virtual environment and affect agent behaviors. Finally, we conduct a user experiment in which we evaluate the usability and user sentiment of our BoidVR application

    On the use of virtual reality in software visualization: The case of the city metaphor

    Background: Researchers have been exploring 3D representations for visualizing software. Among these representations, one of the most popular is the city metaphor, which represents a target object-oriented system as a virtual city. Recently, this metaphor has been also implemented in interactive software visualization tools that use virtual reality in an immersive 3D environment medium. Aims: We assessed the city metaphor displayed on a standard computer screen and in an immersive virtual reality with respect to the support provided in the comprehension of Java software systems. Method: We conducted a controlled experiment where we asked the participants to fulfill program comprehension tasks with the support of (i) an integrated development environment (Eclipse) with a plugin for gathering code metrics and identifying bad smells; and (ii) a visualization tool of the city metaphor displayed on a standard computer screen and in an immersive virtual reality. Results: The use of the city metaphor displayed on a standard computer screen and in an immersive virtual reality significantly improved the correctness of the solutions to program comprehension tasks with respect to Eclipse. Moreover, when carrying out these tasks, the participants using the city metaphor displayed in an immersive virtual reality were significantly faster than those visualizing with the city metaphor on a standard computer screen. Conclusions: Virtual reality is a viable means for software visualization

    Vision-enhanced Peg-in-Hole for automotive body parts using semantic image segmentation and object detection

    Artificial Intelligence (AI) is an enabling technology in the context of Industry 4.0. In particular, the automotive sector is among those who can benefit most of the use of AI in conjunction with advanced vision techniques. The scope of this work is to integrate deep learning algorithms in an industrial scenario involving a robotic Peg-in-Hole task. More in detail, we focus on a scenario where a human operator manually positions a carbon fiber automotive part in the workspace of a 7 Degrees of Freedom (DOF) manipulator. To cope with the uncertainty on the relative position between the robot and the workpiece, we adopt a three stage strategy. The first stage concerns the Three-Dimensional (3D) reconstruction of the workpiece using a registration algorithm based on the Iterative Closest Point (ICP) paradigm. Such a procedure is integrated with a semantic image segmentation neural network, which is in charge of removing the background of the scene to improve the registration. The adoption of such network allows to reduce the registration time of about 28.8%. In the second stage, the reconstructed surface is compared with a Computer Aided Design (CAD) model of the workpiece to locate the holes and their axes. In this stage, the adoption of a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) allows to improve the holes’ position estimation of about 57.3%. The third stage concerns the insertion of the peg by implementing a search phase to handle the remaining estimation errors. Also in this case, the use of the CNN reduces the search phase duration of about 71.3%. Quantitative experiments, including a comparison with a previous approach without both the segmentation network and the CNN, have been conducted in a realistic scenario. The results show the effectiveness of the proposed approach and how the integration of AI techniques improves the success rate from 84.5% to 99.0%

    Quantitation of regional ejection fractions using gated tomographic imaging with Tc-99m-sestamibi

    BACKGROUND: A new oro-dispersible film (ODF) formulation of sildenafil has been developed for the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED) to overcome the drawbacks that some patients experience when taking the conventional film-coated tablet (FCT). AIM: To assess the effectiveness and safety of sildenafil ODF formulation in patients with ED who were using the conventional FCT. METHODS: From May 2017 through July 2017, 139 patients with ED were enrolled. Data from penile color-duplex ultrasound, medical history, hormonal evaluation, and patient self-administered questionnaires were collected. All patients were administered sildenafil 100-mg FCT for 4 weeks. Thereafter, they underwent a 2-week washout period and subsequently took sildenafil 75-mg ODF for 4 weeks. OUTCOMES: The International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-15), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), Patient Global Impressions of Improvement (PGI-I), and Clinician Global Impressions of Improvement (CGI-I) questionnaires were administered and severity of ED was classified as severe (IIEF-15 score ≤ 10), moderate (IIEF-15 score 11-16), or mild (IIEF-15 score = 17-25). RESULTS: All patients completed the final protocol. Differences in mean IIEF scores for erectile function, orgasmic function, sexual desire, and intercourse satisfaction were significantly in favor of sildenafil 100-mg FCT, whereas the mean score for overall satisfaction was in favor of sildenafil 75-mg ODF. A significant difference in changes in HADS score was found from washout to final follow-up (mean difference = -0.19; P < .01). For the ODF formulation, the median CGI-I score was 3.5 (interquartile range [IQR] = 2.5-4.5) and the median PGI-I score was 3.0 (IQR = 2.0-4.0). The median action time was 20.0 minutes (IQR = 15.0-30.0) and the median mouth time was 60.0 seconds (IQR = 30.0-120.0). CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: The ODF formulation of a widely known drug, with the same safety and effectiveness of the FCT, was better appreciated by patients in overall satisfaction. STRENGTHS AND LIMITATIONS: This is the first clinical trial to assess the efficacy of a new formulation of sildenafil in patients with ED. The limitations of the study are related to the methodology used: it was not a case-control study and the patients were not drug-naïve for ED treatment. Therefore, only the "additional" side effects of the ODF formulation compared with FCT are reported. CONCLUSION: The new ODF formulation is as efficient and safe as the FCT formulation and offers a new choice of treatment to specialists for more precisely tailored therapy.     Metastasis-Directed Radiation Therapy with Consolidative Intent for Oligometastatic Urothelial Carcinoma: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

    The management of patients with oligometastatic urothelial carcinoma (UC) represents an evolving field in uro-oncology, and the role of metastasis-directed therapies, including metastasectomy and metastasis-directed radiation therapy (MDRT), is gaining increasing attention. Herein, we summarize available evidence about the role of MDRT with consolidative intent in oligometastatic UC patients. A systematic review was performed in December 2021. Six studies involving 158 patients were identified. Most patients (n = 120, 90.2%) had a history of bladder cancer and the most frequent sites of metastases were lymph nodes (n = 61, 52.1%) followed by the lungs (n = 34, 29%). Overall, 144 metastases were treated with MDRT. Median follow-up ranged from 17.2 to 25 months. Local control rates ranged from 57% to 100%. Median Overall Survival (OS) ranged from 14.9 to 51.0 months and median progression-free survival ranged from 2.9 to 10.1 months. Rates of OS at one and two years ranged from 78.9% to 96% and from 26% to 63%, respectively. Treatment-related toxicity was recorded in few patients and in most cases a low-grade toxicity was evident. MDRT with consolidative intent represents a potential treatment option for selected patients with oligometastatic UC

    A "real life" investigation on the prescriptive habits among Italian andrologists: The "CONSER" survey from Italian Society of Andrology (SIA) on Sildenafil oral film

    Even if oral type 5 phosphodiesterase inhibitors (PDE5i) seem an effective treatment for erectile dysfunction (ED), the drop-out is high among patients. For this reason, pharmaceutical companies are encouraged to develop new administration routes, such as the orally disintegrating film. The aim of this study was to analyse the prescription habit of Italian andrologists affiliated to Italian Society of Andrology (SIA) in the era of new oro-dispersible formulation of sildenafil. A 12-items dedicated questionnaire has been distributed to 77 urologists andrologists. As a result of the questionnaire, sildenafil is still the preferred drug of Italian andrologists as it is considered the safest and the most effective. It combines the speed of action and the discretion of the intake that are very important issues for the adherence to the treatment according to the Italian sample. Physicians have also reported the positive feedback of the patients taking sildenafil film as they consider the oro-dispersible formulation either comparable or superior to the old tablet. In conclusion this new formulation has given a new life to an old molecule like sildenafil, and Italian andrologists considered this new pharmaceutical formulation as a good tool to improve the patient's adherence to the treatment and quality of life
