Indoor location of people is a wide studied topic as it is a powerful tool that can be used to many tasks like helping to navigate better inside a large space like an airport, understanding better the trajectories of people on a certain place, or tailoring marketing strategies depending on the current location of an individual. Currently, indoor location using Bluetooth low energy is very used because of the low power consume and the low prices of the beacons. But an issue of usability is still present and is that every space need a new app, and that discourage the users to use the system. This paper describes the work in progress of a distributed indoor location system using BLE that migrates the processing and calibration requirements from the smartphone to external hardware and the cloud so there is only one free application that can handle all the location based services of every place.Magíster en Ingeniería ElectrónicaMaestrí

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) has proved to be a sensitive technique to detect <it>Trypanosoma cruzi </it>in the chronic phase of Chagas disease, which is characterized by low and fluctuating parasitemia. Another technique proposed for parasitological diagnosis in this phase of infection combines a microscopic search for motile trypomastigote forms in faecal samples (FS) obtained by xenodiagnosis (XD) with conventional PCR (XD-PCR). In this study we evaluate the use of human blood DNA as an exogenous internal control (EIC) for real time PCR (qPCR) combined with XD (XD-qPCR) using chromosome 12 (X12) detection.</p> <p>Findings</p> <p>None of the FS-XD evaluated by qPCR amplified for X12. Nevertheless, all the EIC-FS-XD mixtures amplified for X12.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>We determined that X12 is useful as an EIC for XD-qPCR because we showed that the FS-XD does not contain human DNA after 30 or more days of XD incubation. This information is relevant for research on <it>T. cruzi </it>by XD-qPCR since it allows ruling out inhibition and false negative results due to DNA loss during the process of extraction and purification.</p

The creative cinematographic process at the service of national identity: Pedro Almodóvar and the promotion of Spanish stereotypes

    Get PDF
Cultural expression and creativity contribute to shape national identity; movie experience reflects society. The way in which Pedro Almodóvar’s films facilitates a greater understanding of Spanish culture is the main thesis in this research. This study follows a double methodology: a descriptive documentary phase and an analysis of the filmmaker’s work. The latter includes two substages: a qualitative analysis based on a pattern dealing with different variables related to stereotype perception of Spain abroad; and a quantitative one, which highlights further procedures to approach the national culture. The insight provided by this research proves that Almodóvar actually spreads Spanish identity through his creative universe and empowers its stereotypes, yet by making them more modern: he points out the role of family, but he goes against the traditional model; he turns Madrid, Spain symbolic sight in the international standard about Spanish identity, into the kernel of his work; and he introduces some elements of Spanish popular culture like folklore, gastronomy, bullfighting or rural Spain. Santrauka Kultūrinė raiška ir kūrybiškumas padeda formuoti nacionalinį tapatumą, filmo patirtis atspindi visuomenę. Pagrindinė šio tyrimo ašis – būdas, kurį pasitelkiant Pedro Almodóvaro filmai padeda geriau suprasti Ispanijos kultūrą. Šis tyrimas atliekamas dviem metodais – aprašomąja dokumentika ir filmų kūrėjo darbo analize. Pastaroji apima dvi mažesnes dalis: kokybinę analizę, grindžiamą modeliu, skirtu įvairiems kintamiesiems nagrinėti, susijusiems su tuo, kaip Ispanija suvokiama užsienyje remiantis stereotipais, ir kiekybinę analizę, išryškinančią tolesnes procedūras, padedančias priartėti prie nacionalinės kultūros klausimų. Šiame tyrime plėtojama įžvalga įrodo, kad Almodóvaras plėtoja ispaniškąjį tapatumą išties per savojo kūrybinio viseto prizmę ir įgalina stereotipus, tačiau suteikia jiems šiuolaikiškumo: jis pabrėžia šeimos vaidmenį, tačiau priešinasi tradiciniam modeliui; žvilgsnį į Madridą (Ispanija) jis nukreipia ispaniškojo tapatumo tarptautinių standartų kryptimi, ir tai tampa jo kūrybos branduoliu; be to, jis pateikia tam tikrų Ispanijos populiariosios kultūros elementų iš folkloro, gastronomijos, bulių kovų ar kaimo gyvenimo. Reikšminiai žodžiai: costumbrismo, kūrybiškumas, šeima, nacionalinis tapatumas, Madridas, Pedro Almodóvaras, ispanų stereotipai

BackgroundTemuco is a city in Southern Chile with elevated levels of air pollution (AP), mainly due to using wood as combustion throughout the cold season. The study aimed to assess the differences in cardiometabolic risk factors, estimated cardiovascular risk, and blood level of inflammatory markers between high AP (HAP) and low AP (LAP) periods.MethodsA prospective panel study was conducted between January to September 2018. Air pollution was assessed by PM2.5 concentration. Ninety individuals from the general population were included in the study. Measurements were performed in the HAP and LAP, including medical history and lifestyle, physical activity assessment, physical exam, and fasting blood samples for glucose, lipids, and circulatory inflammatory mediators.ResultsIn the high air pollution period, systolic blood pressure was 3 mmHg higher (p = 0.05). HDL-cholesterol was 14.2 mg/dl lower (p &lt; 0.001), Framingham risk score increased from 14.5 to 18.0 (p &lt; 0.001), and highly significant lower levels of interleukins, MCP1, MMP1, MMP2, sICAM, and svCAM were observed.ConclusionsHAP was associated with increased cardiometabolic risk factors and estimated cardiovascular risk. However, a lower level of circulating acute inflammatory molecules was observed. Inflammatory molecules blood levels were not associated with changes in cardiometabolic risk factors

Phenomenological viability of orbifold models with three Higgs families

We discuss the phenomenological viability of string multi-Higgs doublet models, namely a scenario of heterotic Z3Z_3 orbifolds with two Wilson lines, which naturally predicts three supersymmetric families of matter and Higgs fields. We study the orbifold parameter space, and discuss the compatibility of the predicted Yukawa couplings with current experimental data. We address the implications of tree-level flavour changing neutral processes in constraining the Higgs sector of the model, finding that viable scenarios can be obtained for a reasonably light Higgs spectrum. We also take into account the tree-level contributions to indirect CP violation, showing that the experimental value of ϵK\epsilon_K can be accommodated in the present framework.Comment: 31 pages, 12 figures. Objective: To investigate the impact of COVID19 pandemic on the incidence of health-care associated Clostridioides difficile infection (HA-CDI). Methods: Retrospective study conducted in the Hospital Universitario de Valme (HUV) and the Hospital General Universitario de Alicante (HGUA) in Spain between January 2019 and February 2021. The study period was divided into non-COVID19 period (2019 and months from 2020 to 2021 with 30 hospi talized COVID19 patients) and COVID19 period (months from 2020 to 2021 with >30 COVID19 patients). HA-CDI incidence rates (IR) were calculated as the number of new CDI cases per 10.000 occupied bed days (OBD) and antimicrobial consumption by means of the defined daily dose (DDD) per 1000 OBD. Results: During the COVID19 period, HA-CDI IR in the HUV was 2.6 per 10.000 OBD, which was lower than what was observed during the non-COVID19 period (4.1 per 10.000 OBD; p ¼ 0.1). In the HGUA, HA CDI IR during COVID19 period was 3.9 per 10.000 OBD, which was not significantly different to the IR observed during the non-COVID19 period (3.7 per 10.000 OBD; p ¼ 0.8). There was a slight increase in the total antibiotic consumption during COVID19 period in both hospitals, with significant increases of certain high-risk antibiotics as cephalosporins. Conclsusions: HA-CDI incidence has not increased during the COVID19 pandemic in two tertiary centers in Spain, in spite of a slightly higher antibiotic consumption during the COVID19 period in both hospitals. These findings suggest that, in the presence of strict infection control measures, hospital antibiotic consumption might have a lower impact than expected on HA-CDI
