Chaotic oscillations in a nearly inviscid, axisymmetric capillary bridge at 2:1 parametric resonance
We consider the 2:1 internal resonances (such that Ω1>0 and Ω2 ≃ 2Ω1 are natural frequencies) that appear in a nearly inviscid, axisymmetric capillary bridge when the slenderness Λ is such that 0<Λ<π (to avoid the Rayleigh instability) and only the first eight capillary modes are considered. A normal form is derived that gives the slow evolution (in the viscous time scale) of the complex amplitudes of the eigenmodes associated with Ω1 and Ω2, and consists of two complex ODEs that are balances of terms accounting for inertia, damping, detuning from resonance, quadratic nonlinearity, and forcing. In order to obtain quantitatively good results, a two-term approximation is used for the damping rate. The coefficients of quadratic terms are seen to be nonzero if and only if the eigenmode associated with Ω2 is even. In that case the quadratic normal form possesses steady states (which correspond to mono- or bichromatic oscillations of the liquid bridge) and more complex periodic or chaotic attractors (corresponding to periodically or chaotically modulated oscillations). For illustration, several bifurcation diagrams are analyzed in some detail for an internal resonance that appears at Λ ≃ 2.23 and involves the fifth and eighth eigenmodes. If, instead, the eigenmode associated with Ω2 is odd, and only one of the eigenmodes associated with Ω1 and Ω2 is directly excited, then quadratic terms are absent in the normal form and the associated dynamics is seen to be fairly simple

Using BAM and CEP for Process Monitoring in Cloud BPM
BAM (Business Activity Monitoring) and CEP (Complex Event Processing) have been deeply studied in traditional BPM, according to the procurement of relevant results about process execution, especially for improvement and monitoring purposes. Once BPM was introduced in the cloud and it was necessary to decompose processes in order to execute them in hybrid environments, the conception of monitoring has suffered several changes. In previous works we have designed an architecture for process execution and monitoring which considers several services in order to gather and show the recollected information as relevant results. A new approach over this architecture takes place in this work: it considers BAM and CEP as mechanisms for the information gathering process, and also enhances the monitoring application taking advantage of these two methodologies, now under the distributed perspective. Additionally we make a comparison about when it is convenient to use BAM or CEP alternatively in a distributed environment, according to the nature of the recollected data, the type of indicators needed to be shown and also the latency window over the data used as a source.Facultad de Informátic

Short-term variability of comet C/2012 S1 (ISON) at 4.8 AU from the Sun
We observed comet C/2012 S1 (ISON) during six nights in February 2013 when it
was at 4.8 AU from the sun. At this distance and time the comet was not very
active and it was theoretically possible to detect photometric variations
likely due to the rotation of the cometary nucleus. The goal of this work is to
obtain differential photometry of the comet inner coma using different aperture
radii in order to derive a possible rotational period. Large field of view
images were obtained with a 4k x 4k CCD at the f/3 0.77m telescope of La Hita
Observatory in Spain. Aperture photometry was performed in order to get
relative magnitude variation versus time. Using calibrated star fields we also
obtained ISON's R-magnitudes versus time. We applied a Lomb-Scargle periodogram
analysis to get possible periodicities for the observed brightness variations,
directly related with the rotation of the cometary nucleus. The comet light
curve obtained is very shallow, with a peak-to-peak amplitude of 0.03
0.02 mag. A tentative synodic rotational period (single-peaked) of 14.4
1.2 hours for ISON's nucleus is obtained from our analysis, but there are other
possibilities. We studied the possible effect of the seeing variations in the
obtained periodicities during the same night, and from night to night. These
seeing variations had no effect on the derived periodicity. We discuss and
interpret all possible solutions for the rotational period of ISON's nucleus.Comment: 15 pages, 3 Figures, 2 Tables, accepted for publication in A&
Hybridization of evolutionary algorithms and local search by means of a clustering method
This paper presents a hybrid evolutionary algorithm (EA) to solve nonlinear-regression problems. Although EAs have proven their ability to explore large search spaces, they are comparatively inefficient in fine tuning the solution. This drawback is usually avoided by means of local optimization algorithms that are applied to the individuals of the population. The algorithms that use local optimization procedures are usually called hybrid algorithms. On the other hand, it is well known that the clustering process enables the creation of groups (clusters) with mutually close points that hopefully correspond to relevant regions of attraction. Local-search procedures can then be started once in every such region. This paper proposes the combination of an EA, a clustering process, and a local-search procedure to the evolutionary design of product-units neural networks. In the methodology presented, only a few individuals are subject to local optimization. Moreover, the local optimization algorithm is only applied at specific stages of the evolutionary process. Our results show a favorable performance when the regression method proposed is compared to other standard methods

A Framework to Evaluate Software Developer’s Productivity The VALORTIA Project
Currently, there is a lack in companies developing software in relation to assessing their staff’s productivity
before executing software projects, with the aim of improving effectiveness and efficiency. QuEF (Quality
Evaluation Framework) is a framework that allows defining quality management tasks based on a model.
The main purpose of this framework is twofold: improve an entity’s continuous quality, and given a context,
decide between a set of entity’s instances on the most appropriate one. Thus, the aim of this paper is to
make this framework available to evaluate productivity of professionals along software development and
select the most appropriate experts to implement the suggested project. For this goal, Valortia platform,
capable of carrying out this task by following the QuEF framework guidelines, is designed. Valortia is a
platform to certify users' knowledge on a specific area and centralize all certification management in its
model by means of providing protocols and methods for a suitable management, improving efficiency and
effectiveness, reducing cost and ensuring continuous quality.
