    Why Did You Buy It? A Text Mining Approach to Understanding Purchasing Goals and Review Behaviors

    Online reviews play a fundamental role in supporting purchase decisions and driving sales, but the sheer quantity and varying quality pose challenges for consumers to navigate. Using an unsupervised machine learning approach to extract latent topics from review texts, our paper demonstrates that shopping platforms can extract reviewers\u27 original purchasing goals (profiles) varying in the degree of utility and hedonic orientations. These profiles significantly alter their review behaviors in terms of effort, complexity, sentiment, and rating decision. A follow-up experiment finds early evidence that future consumers perceive reviews that match their shopping orientation more favorably in terms of both argument quality and review helpfulness. The paper contributes a new approach to understanding reviewer behaviors and makes a practical recommendation to online shopping platforms to match reviewer and consumer purchasing orientations

    Online shopping platforms often highlight reviews to aid consumers’ decision-making process. The current research proposes that highlighted review should match between the reviewers’ and the browsing consumers’ purchasing goals (profiles). Using Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA), an unsupervised machine learning method for topic modeling, we uncovered the hidden profiles that show a reviewer’s original purchasing goal, whether utility-oriented or hedonic-oriented. Subsequent analysis revealed that utility- and hedonic-oriented reviewers differ in certain review-writing and rating behaviors. The paper contributes to the literature by suggesting a new way to understand reviewers’ profiles from text data and resulting review behaviors. We also make a practical recommendation for shopping platforms in highlighting more relevant reviews

    Speedup of Interval Type 2 Fuzzy Logic Systems Based on GPU for Robot Navigation

    As the number of rules and sample rate for type 2 fuzzy logic systems (T2FLSs) increases, the speed of calculations becomes a problem. The T2FLS has a large membership value of inherent algorithmic parallelism that modern CPU architectures do not exploit. In the T2FLS, many rules and algorithms can be speedup on a graphics processing unit (GPU) as long as the majority of computation a various stages and components are not dependent on each other. This paper demonstrates how to install interval type 2 fuzzy logic systems (IT2-FLSs) on the GPU and experiments for obstacle avoidance behavior of robot navigation. GPU-based calculations are high-performance solution and free up the CPU. The experimental results show that the performance of the GPU is many times faster than CPU

    Biocompatible chitosan-functionalized upconverting nanocomposites

    Simultaneous integration of photon emission and biocompatibility into nanoparticles is an interesting strategy to develop applications of advanced optical materials. In this work, we present the synthesis of biocompatible optical nanocomposites from the combination of near-infrared luminescent lanthanide nanoparticles and water-soluble chitosan. NaYF4:Yb,Er upconverting nanocrystal guests and water-soluble chitosan hosts are prepared and integrated together into biofunctional optical composites. The control of aqueous dissolution, gelation, assembly, and drying of NaYF4:Yb,Er nanocolloids and chitosan liquids allowed us to design novel optical structures of spongelike aerogels and beadlike microspheres. Well-defined shape and near-infrared response lead upconverting nanocrystals to serve as photon converters to couple with plasmonic gold (Au) nanoparticles. Biocompatible chitosan-stabilized Au/NaYF4:Yb,Er nanocomposites are prepared to show their potential use in biomedicine as we find them exhibiting a half-maximal effective concentration (EC50) of 0.58 mg mL–1 for chitosan-stabilized Au/NaYF4:Yb,Er nanorods versus 0.24 mg mL–1 for chitosan-stabilized NaYF4:Yb,Er after 24 h. As a result of their low cytotoxicity and upconverting response, these novel materials hold promise to be interesting for biomedicine, analytical sensing, and other applications

    This paper presents the results of an experimental study to measure the shortening of reinforced concrete (RC) columns under long-term maintaining concentric axial load. Long-term axial deformation due to shrinkage and creep of the concrete were recorded beside deformation due to mechanical load. Eight RC cylinder - columns (content of reinforcement 1.5% and 2%) with diameter of 150 mm and height of 600 mm were tested during the period of 600 days to determine their shortening. The experimental results showed that the long-term deformation of RC columns occurs primarily during the first year of loading. The deformation creep of concrete is much greater than the shrinkage deformation. The reinforcement content has a significant effect on the long-term deformation of concrete columns

    Status of acute hepatopancreatic necrosis disease (AHPND) and other emerging diseases of penaeid shrimps in Viet Nam

    Acute hepatopancreatic necrosis disease (AHPND), formerly called early mortality syndrome (EMS), was first reported in 2010 among penaeid shrimps cultivated in the Mekong Delta Region of Viet Nam albeit without any laboratory confirmation. The disease subsequently spread to a wide range of shrimp production areas in the same region (Soc Trang: 1,719 ha; Bac Lieu: 346 ha; and Ca Mau: 3,493 ha), so that the Government of Viet Nam requested for technical assistance from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations in 2011. In 2012, FAO supported Viet Nam through the project TCP/VIE/3304 Emergency assistance to control the spread of an unknown disease affecting shrimps in Viet Nam, under which the Department of Animal Health of Viet Nam (DAH) collaborated with the University of Arizona and FAO experts to carry out indepth studies to identify the etiologic agent of the disease. As a result, unique isolates of Vibrio parahaemolyticus was identified as the causative agent of AHPND in 2013. Viet Nam has been vigilant and transparent with regard to aquatic animal diseases through official notifications to the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) and the Network of Aquaculture Centres in Asia-Pacific (NACA). AHPND outbreaks have no clear temporal pattern with black tiger (Penaeus monodon) and whiteleg (P. vannamei) shrimps showing similar incidence risk. The disease occurs at any stage of shrimp cultivation, i.e. on average about 35 days after stocking. To date, unwarranted outbreaks of AHPND in major shrimp-producing provinces in Viet Nam have been apparently regulated. Aside from AHPND, white spot disease (WSD) has also been a persistent problem responsible for serious economic losses in many shrimp-producing areas in Viet Nam. To prevent and control the further spread of infectious diseases of shrimps including AHPND and WSD, multiple control measures have been implemented including guidance of farmers to improve production conditions, facilities and biosecurity application, active surveillance of shrimp production areas for early warning, screening of broodstock and postlarvae for any OIE listed diseases, regulation on movement of stocks, and collaboration with regional and international organizations in carrying out in-depth epidemiological studies that will be needed in the formulation of pragmatic and holistic disease interventions
