    Get PDF
Corrective feedback plays a critical role in language teaching and learning, but little research has been done with regard to teachers’ practices of corrective feedback on students’ speaking performance and their uptake. This paper therefore reports on a descriptive study using qualitative approach to provide insights into strategies teachers used to deliver corrective feedback to their students’ speaking performance and distribution of student uptake within EFL context. Data were collected from observations of two teachers and fifty students at a private high school in a Mekong Delta region. The findings indicate that recast and explicit correction were used the most and that clarification request, recast, and metalinguistic cue were effective in helping students recognize their errors. Implications for language teaching are also presented

    Get PDF
Emotional regulation in learning has been recognised as a critical factor for collaborative learning success. However, the “unobservable” processes of emotion and motivation at the core of learning regulation have challenged the methodological progress to examine and support learners’ regulation. Artificial intelligence (AI) and learning analytics have recently brought novel opportunities for investigating the learning processes. This multidisciplinary study proposes a novel fine-grained approach to provide empirical evidence on the application of these advanced technologies in assessing emotional regulation in synchronous computer-support collaborative learning (CSCL). The study involved eighteen university students (N=18) working collaboratively in groups of three. The process mining analysis was adopted to explore the patterns of emotional regulation in synchronous CSCL, while AI facial expression recognition was used for examining learners’ associated emotions and emotional synchrony in regulatory activities. Our findings establish a foundation for further design of human-centred AI-enhanced support for collaborative learning regulation

This research was carried out to test the potential of combining unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and remote sensing (RS) to support precision mapping of irrigation systems for paddy land. The study area is an urban/agricultural area of Central Vietnam. The Sentinel-2A imagery acquired on 30 June 2018 was interpreted according an object-based classification method aiming to map paddy land and irrigation systems for the Hoa Vang district; the total accuracy was 91.33% with a Kappa coefficient of 0.87. However, with the spatial resolution from the Sentinel-2A images (20 meters x 20 meters) it was difficult to classify paddy land and water from other objects within small and scattered parcel areas. This research was designed on five experimental flying zones, collecting 2,085 images by the UAV. With the very high spatial resolution data of the UAV, it was possible to clearly identify the boundaries of paddy land parcels, water sources such as rivers and lakes, and other objects such as canals and concrete irrigation systems. This classification derived from the orthogonal images from the five experimental zones using an object-based classification method, correcting the interpretation results of the Sentinel 2A images. Outcomes indicate that, the combination of UAV and RS can be applied to support precision mapping of irrigation systems for paddy land in urban agricultural areas.

Allometric relationships among tree-size variables under tropical forest stages in Gia Lai, Vietnam

    Get PDF
Allometric models play an undeniable role for estimating hard-to-measure quantities such as volume, biomass and carbon stock in forests. However, so far there has been limited model development for native forests in Vietnam. Therefore, this study was conducted to build and analyze the effectiveness of nonlinear and mixed models for secondary and old-growth forests in Gia Lai, Vietnam. The study measured diameter at breast height, total height, commercial height and crown width of forest trees in 20 plots (10 plots for each forest stage). The results showed that diameter had the strongest relationship with height. In the secondary forest, the Power, Korf and Ratskowky models were the best for pairs of variables, while Prodan, Weibull and Power models were the best fit in the old-growth forest. The nonlinear mixed-effect models were better than classic nonlinear models in both forest stages. Fixed and mixed models developed in this study are very valuable for estimating difficult-to-measure quantities and contribute to effective forest management in the study region

Growth and development of transgenic peanut (Arachis hypogaea) lines containing chitinase 42 kDa gene from Trichoderma asperellum SH16

Peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) is vulnerable to many diseases. Vietnam and other regions where peanut is widely cultivated have a high threat of fungal and other plant diseases. Various fungicides are available to control the fungal disease but these have various harmful effects on the natural flora, fauna, and environment. Transgenic peanut lines which possess antifungal activity provide a possible solution in managing fungal diseases apart from the traditional resistance and fungicide usage. Therefore, this study evaluated the probable growth and development of chitinase transgenic peanut lines against Sclerotium rolfsii, a pathogen that causes “southern blight” in plants, under greenhouse conditions. This study provided evidence that through Agrobacterium itumefaciens mediated transformation, 42 kDa chitinase genes from Trichoderma asperellum, which is under the regulation of 35S promoter, were successfully incorporated into the peanut’s (A. hypogaea L.) genome and expressed in their plants. This evidence also demonstrated that transgenic peanut lines were suitable for growing and developing in the greenhouse. Further, it was reported that transgenic peanut lines took approximately 133 to 145 days from planting to maturity. These results also revealed that various growth characteristics of transgenic peanut lines having two synthetic genes (syncod Chi42-2 i.e. S2-2, S2-4, S2-6, and syncod Chi42-1 i.e. S1-1, S1-2, S1-3) were greater than that from the wild-type Chi42 (WT-1, WT-2, and WT-3). In addition, yield-related parameters including the number of mature pods, 100 pods weight and 100 seeds weight for all the transgenic peanut lines were higher than that of the non-transformed plant. Among the transgenic lines, line S2-4 exhibited significantly higher growth and yield than the other transgenic lines. These results demonstrated that 42 kDa chitinase genes overexpressing peanut lines could be a candidate for improvement against plants to phytopathogenic fungus S. rolfsii and high yield.
