THE FREQUENCY AND FUNCTIONS OF TEACHERS’ USE OF MOTHER TONGUE IN EFL CLASSROOMS

    Get PDF
Whether mother tongue should be used in EFL classroom or not is a controversial issue and has not yet reached a consensus among teachers and researchers. While some argue that the use of mother tongue inhibits language learning, others claim that it saves time and energy for both language teachers and students and enhances mutual understanding between them. Although a number of studies explore the use of mother tongue in EFL classrooms, few have been conducted to investigate how often teachers in non-English major classes code-switch, that is, change from English to mother tongue and why they do that. In such a context, the current study examined the use of code-switching by teachers in EFL classroom in a medical college in Vietnam by means of classroom observations and voice recording analysis. The findings revealed that in teaching English to nursing students in this medical college, the teachers did code-switch to a great extent for the main purpose of enhancing their students’ English comprehension and competence. Suggestions are proposed to raise EFL teachers’ awareness on how and when to code-switch so that their teaching can be optimized.  Article visualizations

    Get PDF
Concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) columns are used in the construction industry because of their high strength, ductility, stiffness, and fire resistance. This paper developed machine learning techniques for inferring the axial strength in short CFST columns infilled with various strength concrete. Additive Random Forests (ARF) and Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) models were developed and tested using large experimental data. These data-driven models enable us to infer the axial strength in CFST columns based on the diameter, the tube thickness, the steel yield stress, concrete strength, column length, and diameter/tube thickness. The analytical results showed that the ARF obtained high accuracy with the 6.39% in mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) and 211.31 kN in mean absolute error (MAE). The ARF outperformed significantly the ANNs with an improvement rate at 84.1% in MAPE and 65.4% in MAE. In comparison with the design codes such as EC4 and AISC, the ARF improved the predictive accuracy with 36.9% in MAPE and 22.3% in MAE. The comparison results confirmed that the ARF was the most effective machine learning model among the investigated approaches. As a contribution, this study proposed a machine learning model for accurately inferring the axial strength in short CFST columns

The combination of biopolymers with bioceramics plays vital role in development of artificial bone. Hydroxyapatite is extensively used as a material in prosthetic bone repair and replacement. In this paper synthesis of Hydroxyapatite- Polymethyl methacrylate – Zirconia (Hap-PMMA-ZrO2) composite by using powder metallurgy technique. The mechanical, morphological, In-vitro biocompatibility and tribological properties were characterized by universal testing machine, micro-vickers hardness tester, high resolution transmission electron microscope (HR-TEM), MTT assay and pin-on-disc setup. In-vitro cytotoxicity test on HeLa cell lines shows cell viability constant when doses concentration increases so material found non-toxic. Results show that micro Vickers hardness i.e. 520 approximately matches with natural human bone i.e. 400. Compressive strength is less as compared to human bone because of powder metallurgy route used for fabrication and is 74 MPa. Density of proposed composite artificial human bone i.e. 1.52 g/cc is less as compared to natural bone i.e. 2.90 g/cc. The Hap-PMMA-ZrO2 composite will be good biomaterials for bone repair and replacement wor

Abstract. In this work we report a hydrothermal approach for synthesis of zinc stannate (Zn2SnO4)nanocrystals. Our research focused on the effect of the molar ratio of initial chemicals, reaction temperature and reaction duration on the phase composition and the fluorescence properties.Structural and optical properties of the final products were investigated in detail. X-ray diffractionanalysis indicated that the Zn2SnO4 nanocrystals possess face-centered cubic crystal structure.Raman scattering spectra exhibit two characteristic vibrational modes of Zn2SnO4 crystals. Optical band gap of Eu3+-doped Zn2SnO4 nanocrystals obviously depends on Eu3+content. Theroom-temperature emission spectra of the undoped Zn2SnO4 nanocrystals show two broad bands, while the photoluminescence spectra of Eu3+-doped Zn2SnO4 nanocrystals exhibit the emissionpeaks related to the radiative intra-configurational f-f tr ansitions of Eu3+ions. The absorptiontransitions within Eu3+ions were observed both in the photoluminescence excitation spectra andin the diffuse reflection spectra

In this study, Fe3O4/GO/PVP (FGP) was successfully synthesized and efficiently applied for absorbing methylene blue. First, GO was synthesized by Hummer’s method from waste home-batteries. The chemical co-precipitation method was used to fabricate Fe3O4/GO from a mixture solution of GO, Fe3+, Fe2+. Polyvinylpyrrolidone PVP was selected to functionalize Fe3O4/GO and form Fe3O4/GO/PVP for improving dispersibility purpose in aqueous solution. The obtained Fe3O4/GO/PVP was characterized by XRD, FT-IR, BET, FE-SEM, UV-Vis techniques. Moreover, the effecting factors as pH, time adsorption, initial concentration of methylene blue were conducted. Adsorption isotherm models were also identified. The results showed that specific surface area of FGP-3 was 70.0 m2.g-1, the Freundlich isotherm model was suitable and the Dubinin - Radushkevich isotherm model showed that the process was physical adsorption. The maximum capacity (qmax) was 30.4 mg.g-1. These findings prove Fe3O4/GO/PVP as an inexpensive and efficient adsorbent for removal of cationic dyes

This study aimed to determine the effect of a commercial diet's protein level on the fry-to-fingerling stage. Thirty days-old fries having the initial length and weight of 18.25 ± 0.15 mm fish-1 and 0.036 ± 0.50 g fish-1 respectively have been used in this study. Diet having three protein levels i.e. 30% (trial 1 as control), 35% (trial 2), 40% (trial 3), and 45% (trial 4), respectively, have been used to evaluate the effect of protein, and each trial has been repeated three times. During the study, stocking density was allocated to 1000 fish per composite tank with a volume of 1 m3. After 30 days of rearing, the weight of fingerlings in trial 1 reached up to 1.50 ± 0.02 g fish-1 and it was recorded as 1.52 ± 0.01g for trial 2, these two were lower than that of trials 3 and 4, where fingerling weight was reported 1.69 ± 0.01 and 1.58g fish-1 respectively and obtained the best weight compared to others. The length of fingerlings at the end of the experimental period was also changed in different trials and it was recorded 47.12; 46.92; 50.97; and 48.89 mm fish-1 for trail 1, 2, 3, and 4 respectively, among the tested combinations lower fingerlings length was recorded for trial 2 (35% CP), but it is not significantly different for trial 1 and 2 and a significant difference (P < 0.05) was reported for trail 2, 3, and 4. The survival rate of fingerlings ranged from 67.27 to 72.33%. Meanwhile, the herd distribution coefficient variation (CVW) in the treatment using 40% protein (trial 3) was the highest at 72.33% (p < 0.05). The results of the study can be concluded that the level of protein has a significant effect on the various growth parameters of fingerlings
