Changes in the Personal and Teaching Efficacy Levels of Teachers Exposed to the FOCUS Model
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the changes in the teacher efficacy levels of teachers exposed to an instructional model referred to as FOCUS. The analysis revealed that a majority of the participants had pre-treatment efficacy scores that corresponded to higher post-treatment efficacy scores, on at least one of the two efficacy scales, for the participants who were exposed to the FOCUS model. These finds, although they should only be considered preliminary due to the nature of the research design employed in this study, do suggest the need for further study of the FOCUS model’s impact on teacher efficacy
Statistics of Certain Models of Evolution
In a recent paper, Newman surveys the literature on power law spectra in
evolution, self-organised criticality and presents a model of his own to arrive
at a conclusion that self-organised criticality is not necessary for evolution.
Not only did he miss a key model (Ecolab) that has a clear self-organised
critical mechanism, but also Newman's model exhibits the same mechanism that
gives rise to power law behaviour as does Ecolab. Newman's model is, in fact, a
``mean field'' approximation of a self-organised critical system. In this
paper, I have also implemented Newman's model using the Ecolab software,
removing the restriction that the number of species remains constant. It turns
out that the requirement of constant species number is non-trivial, leading to
a global coupling between species that is similar in effect to the species
interactions seen in Ecolab. In fact, the model must self-organise to a state
where the long time average of speciations balances that of the extinctions,
otherwise the system either collapses or explodes. In view of this, Newman's
model does not provide the hoped-for counter example to the presence of
self-organised criticality in evolution, but does provide a simple, almost
analytic model that can used to understand more intricate models such as
Ecolab.Comment: accepted in Phys Rev E.; RevTeX; See

Flight Test Results from Real-Time Relative Global Positioning System Flight Experiment on STS-69
A real-time global positioning system (GPS) Kalman filter has been developed to support automated rendezvous with the International Space Station (ISS). The filter is integrated with existing Shuttle rendezvous software running on a 486 laptop computer under Windows. In this work, we present real-time and postflight results achieved with the filter on STS-69. The experiment used GPS data from an Osborne/Jet propulsion Laboratory TurboRouge receiver carried on the Wake Shield Facility (WSF) free flyer and a Rockwell Collins 3M receiver carried on the Orbiter. Real time filter results, processed onboard the Shuttle and replayed in near-time on the ground, are based on single vehicle mode operation and on 5 to 20 minute snapshots of telemetry provided by WSF for dual-vehicle mode operation. The Orbiter and WSF state vectors calculated using our filter compare favorably with precise reference orbits determined by the University of Texas Center for Space Research. The lessons learned from this experiment will be used in conjunction with future experiments to mitigate the technology risk posed by automated rendezvous and docking to the ISS
Further Evidence for Intrinsic Redshifts in Normal Spiral Galaxies
Evidence from galaxy absolute magnitudes, linear diameters, and HyperLeda
images is presented which strongly supports the interpretation that some normal
spiral galaxies can contain large non-cosmological (intrinsic) redshifts in
excess of 5000 km s-1.Comment: 17 pages, Astrophysics&Space Science - Accepted for publicatio
Shearography NDE of NASA COPV
1. 21 Composite Over-wrapped Pressure Vessels (COPV) consisting of Kevlar Space Shuttle Fleet Leaders and Graphite COPV were inspected at NASA WSTF, NM from Sept. 12 through Sept 16. 2. The inspection technique was Pressurization Shearography, tests designed to image composite material damage, degradation or design flaws leading to stress concentrations in the axial or hoop strain load path. 3. The defect types detected consisted of the following: a) Intentional impact damage with known energy. b) Un-intentional impact damage. c) Manufacturing defects. 4. COPV design features leading to strain concentrations detected include: a) Strain concentrations at bosses due to fiber closure pattern. b) Strain concentrations in body of COPV due to fiber wrap pattern. c) Strain concentrations at equator due to liner weld/fiber lay-up
Mitigation of Crack Damage in Metallic Materials
A system designed to mitigate or heal crack damage in metallic materials has been developed where the protected material or component is coated with a low-melting temperature film. After a crack is formed, the material is heated, melting the film which then infiltrates the crack opening through capillary action. Upon solidification, the healing material inhibits further crack damage in two ways. While the crack healing material is intact, it acts like an adhesive that bonds or bridges the crack faces together. After fatigue loading damages, the healing material in the crack mouth inhibits further crack growth by creating artificially-high crack closure levels. Mechanical test data show that this method sucessfully arrests or retards crack growth in laboratory specimens
Magnetism, FeS colloids, and Origins of Life
A number of features of living systems: reversible interactions and weak
bonds underlying motor-dynamics; gel-sol transitions; cellular connected
fractal organization; asymmetry in interactions and organization; quantum
coherent phenomena; to name some, can have a natural accounting via
interactions, which we therefore seek to incorporate by expanding the horizons
of `chemistry-only' approaches to the origins of life. It is suggested that the
magnetic 'face' of the minerals from the inorganic world, recognized to have
played a pivotal role in initiating Life, may throw light on some of these
issues. A magnetic environment in the form of rocks in the Hadean Ocean could
have enabled the accretion and therefore an ordered confinement of
super-paramagnetic colloids within a structured phase. A moderate H-field can
help magnetic nano-particles to not only overcome thermal fluctuations but also
harness them. Such controlled dynamics brings in the possibility of accessing
quantum effects, which together with frustrations in magnetic ordering and
hysteresis (a natural mechanism for a primitive memory) could throw light on
the birth of biological information which, as Abel argues, requires a
combination of order and complexity. This scenario gains strength from
observations of scale-free framboidal forms of the greigite mineral, with a
magnetic basis of assembly. And greigite's metabolic potential plays a key role
in the mound scenario of Russell and coworkers-an expansion of which is
suggested for including magnetism.Comment: 42 pages, 5 figures, to be published in A.R. Memorial volume, Ed

Observations of whistler mode waves with nonlinear parallel electric fields near the dayside magnetic reconnection separatrix by the Magnetospheric Multiscale mission
We show observations from the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission of whistler mode waves in the Earth's low-latitude boundary layer (LLBL) during a magnetic reconnection event. The waves propagated obliquely to the magnetic field toward the X line and were confined to the edge of a southward jet in the LLBL. Bipolar parallel electric fields interpreted as electrostatic solitary waves (ESW) are observed intermittently and appear to be in phase with the parallel component of the whistler oscillations. The polarity of the ESWs suggests that if they propagate with the waves, they are electron enhancements as opposed to electron holes. The reduced electron distribution shows a shoulder in the distribution for parallel velocities between 17,000 and 22,000 km/s, which persisted during the interval when ESWs were observed, and is near the phase velocity of the whistlers. This shoulder can drive Langmuir waves, which were observed in the high-frequency parallel electric field data
Evidence for Intrinsic Redshifts in Normal Spiral Galaxies
The Tully-Fisher Relationship (TFR) is utilized to identify anomalous
redshifts in normal spiral galaxies. Three redshift anomalies are identified in
this analysis: (1) Several clusters of galaxies are examined in which late type
spirals have significant excess redshifts relative to early type spirals in the
same clusters, (2) Galaxies of morphology similar to ScI galaxies are found to
have a systematic excess redshift relative to the redshifts expected if the
Hubble Constant is 72 km s-1 Mpc-1, (3) individual galaxies, pairs, and groups
are identified which strongly deviate from the predictions of a smooth Hubble
flow. These redshift deviations are significantly larger than can be explained
by peculiar motions and TFR errors. It is concluded that the redshift anomalies
identified in this analysis are consistent with previous claims for large
non-cosmological (intrinsic) redshifts.Comment: Accepted for publication at Astrophysics&Space Science. 36 pages

30 days wild: development and evaluation of a large-scale nature engagement campaign to improve well-being
There is a need to increase people’s engagement with and connection to nature, both for human well-being and the conservation of nature itself. In order to suggest ways for people to engage with nature and create a wider social context to normalise nature engagement, The Wildlife Trusts developed a mass engagement campaign, 30 Days Wild. The campaign asked people to engage with nature every day for a month. 12,400 people signed up for 30 Days Wild via an online sign-up with an estimated 18,500 taking part overall, resulting in an estimated 300,000 engagements with nature by participants. Samples of those taking part were found to have sustained increases in happiness, health, connection to nature and pro-nature behaviours. With the improvement in health being predicted by the improvement in happiness, this relationship was mediated by the change in connection to nature
